Katie blinked her big, pretty blue eyes, looking as vacant as could be. Reggie looked at her, skeptical that she was even processing what time of the day it was. A dumb bitch like her was good for his side job, Reggie thought. But for the actual business of being mayor ... yeesh.

Reggie was the first Black mayor in the capital city since corrupt Moses Jones had been ousted and incarcerated a generation prior. Reggie was no hero. In fact, he was equally corrupt as Moses had been. He just intended to be smarter.

Katie blinked dully once more. It'd been difficult to arrange this -- an undercover job, essentially, on top of her daily job at the paper. But her boss was convinced that Reggie was corrupt as hell. And it was Katie's job to get the scoop of a century.
