Chapter 36 by jj0445 jj0445

What's next?

Explore the town

By the time both of you leave the café, the town feels fully awake around you.

The sidewalks are crowded now with tourists, couples, families, and groups of friends wandering between little beach shops and restaurants beneath the warm afternoon sun. Ocean air drifts through the streets while distant seagulls echo somewhere near the shoreline, mixing with the sound of conversations and traffic farther down the road.

Jane stays tucked comfortably against your side while the two of you walk slowly down the sidewalk together, her fingers loosely intertwined with yours.

Honestly?

Everything feels easy right now.

Warm sunlight catches against her legs every few seconds while her denim shorts continue making it borderline impossible not to look at her whenever she walks ahead of you slightly. At one point she catches your eyes drifting again and immediately smiles smugly without even saying anything.

Unfortunately she knows exactly what those shorts are doing to you.

The two of you wander through little tourist shops for a while after that.

A surf store.

A bookstore.

Some ridiculously overpriced beach boutique where Jane immediately gets distracted by candles that all somehow smell exactly the same.

“These are different,” she argues while holding two candles toward you.

“They literally both smell like vanilla.”

“One is coconut vanilla,” Jane corrects seriously.

“That’s still vanilla.”

“You don’t understand sophistication,” she replies dramatically.

You laugh softly while she narrows her eyes at you before putting both candles back anyway.

A few minutes later she stops in front of another tiny shop window filled with jewelry and little handmade beach decorations.

“Ooh,” Jane says immediately. “Wait these are cute.”

You already know that tone.

“That sentence usually costs me money,” you tease.

“I support local artists,” she replies proudly.

“You support destroying my wallet.”

Jane gasps dramatically before lightly hitting your arm.

“You’re being unsupportive of the arts right now.”

“You almost spent thirty dollars on a decorative shell.”

“It was a cute shell,” she argues immediately.

You laugh quietly while she crosses her arms dramatically.

“You’re judging her,” Jane says. “And she did nothing wrong.”

“The shell is a she now?”

“She has personality.”

“That’s deeply concerning.”

Jane tries unsuccessfully not to laugh afterward before eventually stepping closer against your side again, her shoulder bumping warmly into yours.

“You’d still buy it for me,” she says softly.

Unfortunately?

She sounds way too confident saying that.

“That’s not the point.”

“That’s basically a yes,” Jane replies smugly.

Honestly, she’s probably right.

The playful arguing fades naturally after that while both of you continue wandering slowly through town together beneath the sunlight. Nothing about it feels serious. The teasing just blends comfortably into the rhythm of being around each other.

At one point the crowded shops begin thinning out near the water while the sound of the ocean grows louder nearby. Sand stretches farther down the coastline while groups of people gather near the beach access paths ahead.

Then suddenly, faint music drifts through the ocean air.

Not from a storefront.

Live music.

Jane immediately perks up.

“Oh wait,” she says excitedly while grabbing your arm.

Farther down the beach, a small local band has set up near the sand with microphones, amps, and acoustic guitars facing a loose crowd gathered around them. The music carries softly through the salty air while people sit on blankets or stand near the edge of the sand listening beneath the bright afternoon sun.

And honestly?

The second you hear the acoustic guitar and layered harmonies drifting toward you, your chest tightens a little too.

Because live music always gets you.

The atmosphere.

The warmth.

The feeling of everybody just existing together around sound for a little while.

Immediately it reminds you of the diner playlist from the drive down.

Jane singing beside you in the car.

Her trying to **** you into harmonizing badly at red lights.

The way both of you kept laughing through entire songs instead of actually finishing them.

“Oh my god,” Jane says softly while smiling toward the beach. “Can we PLEASE go watch?”

You laugh quietly because honestly she doesn’t even need to ask.

“You already know the answer.”

Her entire face brightens immediately afterward.

Then she grabs your hand and starts pulling you toward the sand while the music grows louder the closer both of you get to the crowd gathered near the shoreline.

The ocean crashes softly behind the band while warm sunlight spills across the beach around everybody listening.

And somehow?

Walking toward live music with her hand tangled through yours already feels like one of those memories you’re going to keep forever.
