A school? We're at a school? Man, that's a hard break...

“Uh, what do you mean mages?” you ask with a raised eyebrow

“Exactly that! We are mages. It's quite simple really. Everybody in this world has some kind of magical energy. There are those that have a very low magical energy and cannot harness its nature, the 'normal folk' and you have others that have larger magical energies but still cannot harness their power, we call these people 'fledglings' and lastly there are those of us with larger magical energies who can harness its power, and we call these people 'mages'.” he explains “Keeping up?”

“Uhh, I think so.” is all you can manage, truthfully this is all making your head spin a little, but it isn't coming as a surprise to you. Had you already known this information before?

“This is where you come in, dear boy!” he exclaims

Oof, he sounds excited.

“For you, dear boy, are a fledgling! We were able to find you in that blizzard because of your magical energy. But as you have shown no understanding of magic, nor have you tried any kind of magic yourself since being here in my academy, we can only assume you can not harness its nature.” he continues. “And you just so happen to be in luck! Our new first years will be starting tomorrow, and I have put you on the list to start with them. I assume you have nothing better to do seeing as you don't know who, or indeed what you are..?” He remarks coyly

“Who or.. 'what' I am?” You probe for more information. Does he know more than he is letting on?

“Not to worry, dear boy! Not to worry.” He reiterates.

“Now, you will begin first thing tomorrow morning 8 am, Madame LeBoux here (He gestures to the nurse) will show you to your dorm where you will be staying for your first semester. Any questions?” He asks so matter of factly.

“Uh, yes. Just a couple..”

“Well, what is it, boy?”
