Examples of Resolving Custom Moves by Trait

HOUSE TRAIT

Moves where you must demonstrate your House's special talents, skills, or style.

Example: Diego Alcazar, a Leontes student, wants to be appointed as a House Prefect. This will allow him his own private bedroom as well as a nifty badge and uniform. This is a CUSTOM MOVE on his House Trait because he must demonstrate the House's virtue of Bravery.

• On a 10+, Diego gets appointed as Prefect. In addition, Take +1 XP or +1 Forward or remove a CONSEQUENCE or gain a FRIEND (the Head Girl/chief Prefect, Borte Caballera).
• On a 7-9 (Costly Success), Diego is heaped with extra Prefect duties. Take a CONSEQUENCE.
• On a Miss, Diego is declined.

AMBITION

Moves whose success depends on charm, charisma, connections, and social talent.

Example: Indigo Carmine, a Draconis student, is angry with Bennett Ocher, another Draconis student, for Bennett abusing his Prefect authority. Indigo wants to make Bennett lose his Prefect office, a CUSTOM MOVE on AMBITION.

• On a 10+, Indigo gets Bennett to resign as Prefect. Take +1 XP or +1 Forward, or remove a CONSEQUENCE (perhaps Bennett got Indigo assigned to do penalty work, represented as a CONSEQUENCE).
• On a 7-9 (Costly Success), Indigo expends a FAVOR with House Draconis's Tutor to remove Bennett's Prefect office.
• On a 7-9 (Complicated Success), Bennett offers to resign if Indigo will sweet-talk Bennett's ex-girlfriend Penny from House Beavertail to take him back. Roll an ENCOUNTER with Penny (+DILIGENCE since she's in Beavertail). On a success (7+), Penny agrees to give Bennett another chance, and Bennett agrees to resign.
• On a Miss, Bennett catches Indigo trying to cause trouble. Indigo gains Bennett as an ENEMY.
• On a Miss, Bennett exposes Indigo's campaign as a fraud. Take a CONSEQUENCE, or go to Detention and GET OUT OF DETENTION next turn.

BRAVERY

Moves whose success depends on courage or physical talent.

Example: Gilbert Pennywhistle has dropped his wand down a pit full of spiders as the consequence of an earlier Miss. To climb down and retrieve his wand is a CUSTOM MOVE on BRAVERY.

• On a 10+, Gilbert retrieves his wand, plus finds a clue to where the spiders are coming from. +1 Forward on Gilbert's next roll.
• On a 10+, Gilbert retrieves his wand, keeping a cool head and steady hand through the difficult climb while being menaced by spiders. Gain +1 XP.
• On a 7-9 (Complicated Success), Gilbert regains his wand, but his ENEMY has caught him in the pit. CONFRONT YOUR ENEMY next turn.
• On a 7-9 (Complicated Success), Gilbert regains his wand, but the spiders are closing in. GET OUT OF DANGER next turn.
• On a Miss, Gilbert cannot find a way down to get his wand.
• On a Miss, Gilbert's ENEMY appears and steals his wand. Take a CONSEQUENCE; roleplay how Gilbert recovers or replaces the wand as part of removing the CONSEQUENCE.

CUNNING

Moves whose success depends on cleverness, magical talent, or creative inspiration.

Example: Kiki Misandra from Minerval is trying to divine the missing piece of her MASS TRANSFORM BOYS TO FROGS spell by experimenting. This is a CUSTOM MOVE on CUNNING, and applies to work on a Forbidden Spell (because being a transformed into a frog will interfere with being a Boarbristle student). Kiki hides in a vacant house in Turnbuckle and waits for boys to go by so she can experiment on her spell.

• On a 10+, Kiki discovers the missing piece, and gains +1 XP or +1 Forward when she prepares to interrupt Broom Polo by turning House Leontes' team (all boys) into frogs.
• On a 7-9, (Costly Success), Kiki learns the spell but must expend a FAVOR from her House Master to turn some House classmates back from frogs without getting into trouble.
• On a 7-9, (Costly Success), Kiki learns the spell but is caught as she prepares to spring the spell on some annoying boys. GET OUT OF TROUBLE.
• On a Miss, Kiki is sent to Detention for messing with Forbidden Spells. GET OUT OF DETENTION.

DILIGENCE

Moves whose success depends on doing a thorough job with attention to detail.

Example: Tabitha Know-It-All from Minerval is trying to get a job at the Library so she can browse the closed stacks. The librarian gives her a trial day working at the Library to see if Tabitha would be suitable. This is a CUSTOM MOVE on DILIGENCE (or could be handled as an ENCOUNTER).

• On a 10+, Tabitha gets the job. Take +1 XP (maybe to be applied to a Forbidden Spell learned from the library), take +1 Forward (maybe her next Move is searching the closed stacks), or take the Librarian as a new FRIEND who can be encountered for help and getting FAVORS.
• On a 7-9 (Costly Success), Tabitha gets the job. However, the first day on the job, Tabitha opens the wrong book and breaks a seal imprisoning its guardian spirit. She manages to dismiss it before it can possess her but it gives her a massive headache. Take a CONSEQUENCE.
• On a 7-9 (Complicated Success), Tabitha seduces the Librarian. Roll HAVE SEX with the Librarian, and on a 7+, Tabitha gets the job and applies the Minerval Sex Move to learn a secret from the Librarian.
• On a Miss, Tabitha can't demonstrate that she's diligent enough to make a good library assistant.
