Chapter 1745 by Fiftyfiftyfifty Fiftyfiftyfifty

What do you do?

Escape into the next room.

Your party rushes through the unsealed doorway into an expansive chamber, and as the final person passes by, the door once again transforms into nothing more than a shape carved into the wall, meaning there's no easy way back now. But by how the room ahead looks, you don't think there's much left to see. This is the largest of the ones you've seen so far. You don't have time to count, but it's probably a hundred feet both wide and long, and the ceiling is twice the height of anything previous. Most of the light comes from a giant circle casting down from the center, like a window leading to a sun hovering directly overhead, though considering your depth and the angle, you know it must be simulated.

Unlike the rest of the dungeon, this room isn't as orderly. There are patches of dirt, and grass grows up between the tiles. Four thick columns near each corner keep the ceiling structurally sound, and you can make out worn carvings all around them. Until you can inspect them closer, you would describe them as simply geometrical--simple, stark lines in perfect shapes, mainly squares and triangles.

But most alarming of all, there's a hulking figure standing in the center. You've seen one like it before.

At over twice your height, and even much wider, what you may call a robot or golem though made of dark flesh stands beneath the spotlight. It's mostly torso, with arms mighty enough to easily cause the columns around it to shatter, and feet so wide, and a body so heavy, one would be instantly slain if crushed beneath them. There's no mistaking it after you've seen one before. It's a Dungeon Lord, perhaps one of the most powerful demons you had faced in the past.

You aim your blade towards it. "So you're the Dungeon Master, right?"

There's a tap on your shoulder. It's Eva. As she fidgets up and down, she whispers, "Psst. Hey, can we skip all the introductory monologue stuff and get to the fight?"

"You got somewhere to be?" you ask.

"W-Well, uhm... kinda..." She swallows hard as she brings a hand to the front of her skirt, pushing in while her thighs close in together. "I admit. My own fault. Went a little too hard on the Decanter."

"Heed my words!" booms the voice of the narrator, though now it isn't an ethereal voice from all around you. It comes from the beast ahead. The Dungeon Lord, or as she calls herself, the Dungeon Master, speaks up, and her voice is obnoxiously loud. "You have entered the final chamber of the dungeon. First you notice that the boss room is very well made. Natural, even. Ahead stands the most powerful monster of all, and unfortunately for you, there is nothing you can do. You've made it far, but the simple reality is that you aren't strong enough to complete this dungeon. You fall here. And all your loot will be ours."

Niki crosses her arms across her breastplate with a stern expression. "Making a dungeon you can't complete is pretty stupid."

"She gets it, and she hasn't even played Dungeons & Dragons," Xiaoqing says.

"What? I've done dungeons and dragons."

"No, I mean--"

"Silence!" shouts the Dungeon Master. "I'll give you one ultimatum. Either face me and die, or leave every precious item you have behind, and I'll allow you to leave in one piece."

You squint back at her. "So that's what it's all about. You get to stroke your ego over your super basic dungeon design, and you get to collect the magic items of the adventurers who fall. Then the Prison Princess has her fun with them. You said the loot will be ours... I don't think that cosmic horror downstairs cares about treasure. There's somebody else, isn't there?"

There's no response. The creature doesn't even budge.

Amara points her staff forwards. "Be careful. Remember how strong the last one was, and we don't have Jelly this time to crawl inside."

"Every foe has a weak point," says Snow as she caresses the feathers of an arrow in her quiver between her fingers. "And we're stronger than we've ever been."

"That's right!" says Eva. "Which means we can finish this fight like, super fast. Preferably in the next few minutes?"

Xiaoqing tugs on the brim of her cap. "Aak'aba, Empress of Ice, grant me your power."

"I'm taking no chances," says Niki. While marching forward, she parts her lips to speak the magic word for her spell. "Ae--"

"DID YOU SAY SUPER BASIC DUNGEON DESIGN?!" screams the Dungeon Master. The entire room trembles by the sheer volume of her delayed reaction.

This one doesn't appear or move exactly like the other. To attack, she throws a fist forwards, though you aren't sure what to expect given her distance from the party. Then her arm stretches out like rubber, though despite how far it must travel, when it collides with the wall, the impact is booming. Thankfully the party moves out of the way--all except the one you'd expect. After the attack withdraws back, Niki is left crushed into an impact crater right next to the sealed door.

She falls to her hands and knees and coughs out a pebble. "Ow."

Amara places a hand on your shoulder. "I am a little drained and uhm... a little sensitive... but take this. Bless!" With a spell, she bolsters your resolve. You feel stronger and more confident in taking a few hits now. Then she says, "N-Now I will heal you, Niki."

"No need." Niki cracks her knuckles. "As I was saying before... Aegis!" It's unlikely she has much mana left, though he uses it well. A burning energy sears down over her flesh, and in its wake, her body tints a metallic grey. This steel-like coating greatly increases her defense, though she does move noticeably slower while in effect. She slams her mace against her shield, and then looks down, pondering for a moment. With a grin, she shines the beacon of red light straight at the Dungeon Master. "Hey! You're a girl, right?"

The beam strikes the center of the creature's body, but it reflects off like a mirror. Unfortunately it lines perfectly up with Snow, who was making her way to the corner of the room. She collapses onto her knees in surprised embarrassment--body burning with intense arousal in a matter of seconds.

"Oops!" Niki ends the effect. "Sorry about that."

Snow raises a hand and nods. "It's... all right..."

"Right. Durable as hell. Got it. But not more than I am!" She sprints directly towards the final boss without any care to defend herself. There's no need. If she could survive being smooshed against the wall before by her Rite of the Sun marking's effect alone, paired with her Aegis spell, it's unlikely she can be hurt.

It's a problem the other way around as well. Dungeon Lords have extremely high defense, though you remember that Jelly was able to seep into one's cracks. They aren't invincible. All you might need to do is wear it down.
