Nadia takes a deep breath. "Might as well get it over with, right?" she asks your group of stragglers.

Nadia looks resigned, looking at the rest of the first-years shivering on the beach and the four House prefects beckoning to the five of you -- you and Nadia, the Beavertails; the brown-skinned, athletic-looking girl with the broom, from Leontes; and the bespectacled Minerval boy and red-headed Draconis girl who were arguing up till the first students started splashing ashore.

The fit, cheerful Leontes girl with the broom gives Nadia a grin. "Guess so, sport," she says. Looking at Nadia's hand-me-downs, she adds, "Guess you won't miss that uniform."

You don't want to get it over with- you don't want to do it at all! But as your head swims, looking down into the water, you feel something else bubbling up that might make the issue null if you didn't hurry and make a choice.

• Ask the Leontes girl to take you on her broom. Roll +Bravery (-1) to ENCOUNTER her. On a 7-9, narrate a cost, complication, or bargain to get you across. On a success, also record her name.
• Make a wish (a wild-talent magic). Custom Move on Cunning at -2 (+0). On a success, score +1 XP and you arrive dry on the shore. On a complication, also narrate a magical backfire, take a CONSEQUENCE and GET OUT OF TROUBLE. On a Miss, either take a CONSEQUENCE or narrate a magical backfire and GET OUT OF TROUBLE.
