‘Her son Darren was winning again at her’. Her stress vitamins were starting to take away and anxiety, but they left June edgy, and ill tempered. ‘God the boy needed constant attention’ A mother’s work was never done.
“Ummm mom…. Naomi and Brad are getting bored and wanted me to…. Ask you to come back out” June finished her drink’
‘Naomi! She was June’s real problem’ Junes carefully orchestrated social dynamics were coming along well. She was the cool mom. Brad and Naomi were the cool kids that were hanging out with her sheepish children because of her efforts. Sure brad teneded to boss Darren around a little….. It might even be called bullying….. And June was pretty sure that the muscle bound Hunk would ever take a true romantic interest in her daughter. But the situation was improving. At least Darren had someone to hang out with. At least Amy had finally started talking to a boy, even if he was as dumb as a lump of rocks.
“Tell them I’m coming,” she said, voice soft and sweet but edged like a razor. “Mommy just needed a minute.”
The social hierarchy was clear. Naomi controlled Brad. Brad controlled the social gravity of the entire afternoon. And Brad…..that gorgeous, oblivious, protein-powdered puppy of a boy, and Brad was the ticket to her children's social futures. June knew she could have Brad wrapped around her little finger without even lifting it, so that was what she would do. Take control of the himbo and cut Naomi out of the picture entirely. June was sure she could find someone else for her son to pine over and her daughter to idolize.
