Chapter 4 by leroy leroy

How does the attack go?

Entry goes off without a hitch

You sat inside a drop-ship landed just two hundred meters from the base entrance, watching the screens and coordinating your forces. After all, a general who led from the front, while heavily respected, would lose sight of the big picture. You were only using one of you companies for this operation, three hundred women for a hollowed out asteroid was more than enough. Bringing in the entire brigade would have been overkill. Still you were sharing the drop ship with an extra platoon, one squad of them carrying lethal weapons. Couldn't be too careful.

You'd given your favorite company the privilege of taking the base. They'd been **** to sit out the last battle due to the enemy not bringing enough troops. In addition Captain Amelia was aggressive and knew how to act with initiative, perfect qualities for operation in an enclosed space where events could move quickly. You had to admit to yourself that those weren't the only reasons either. Amelia had gotten married recently and after three months of trying for a child they'd learned her wife had an extremely rare condition that rendered her infertile in both ways. Despite the devastating effects that could have on some relationships the two still loved each other and had decided to keep any children Amelia had, rather than turn them over to family assignment. As you watched her order her breaching platoon to enter you hoped she would find a suitable mother to make her wife happy.

You switched your view to Lieutenant Elizabeth, as she began to work on the code, it was almost impossible to hide a hack of a physical console so by now alarms would be going off inside. Elizabeth knew her work well however and within half a minute the airlock opened its outer door. As the first squad rushed in to get cycled inside you switched your view to the Sergeant leading it. This was the most dangerous part of the operation, if the enemy was prepared the Sergeant would be charging in to a cavalcade of stun fire after the inner door opened. This close to the airlock the enemy likely wouldn't risk using lethals.

"Weapons up, remember try to avoid head shots, these things can kill if they stop neurons from firing." She ordered raising her own stun rifle. A stubborn group had created them to try and get guns added back into warfare. By that point however people had started thinking of ways to cheat the rules. A brief trial period had shown just how easy they were to spoof, a simple layer of special paint, undetectable by Armorers, could prevent a hit from being registered, something that was much harder with a physical object like an arrow. They'd still been a useful addition to the arsenals of the various powers as a means of eliminating threats outside of the battlefield where the enemy wasn't wearing armor. As all powers still required firearms training due to the possibility of another alien threat the stun weapons had provided a means of keeping it sharp.

The inner door opened and the squad rushed in. The sound of alarms blaring through the base was quite a contrast to the lack of sound of the void but there was nothing on the other side but a single hallway leading to the main base. It would have been a perfect 'killzone' if even one enemy had been in cover at the end of that hallway but they'd obviously been caught off guard. As one of the three fire teams stayed behind to keep the airlock secure and help cycle through the rest of the company the other two rushed forward to keep the initiative. They would keep going until they encountered resistance, with the entire facility being a series of ****-points interspersed with manufacturing centers and living quarters it was essential to get as deep as possible before the defenders could organize themselves.

Already the next squad was cycling in, the first part of the operation was going smoothly.

Too smoothly?
