Chapter 6 by MissTaken MissTaken

How much time are you afforded?

Enough.

You sit there alone in the dark until, eventually, you calm down and begin feeling a little silly. You were mortified after reading that text, but is it really that big a deal? Maybe Janie, despite being the bitch that she is and always will be, was right. Not right in what she did, but right in what she said afterward. All you need to do is tell the truth, and the truth will set you free. Sure, it will be awkward, and Rick's feelings might be hurt, but he's not the type of guy that would try to make you feel guilty about it. Your correspondence may suffer for it, but that's probably for the best. You've been leading him on, you realize, and that needs to stop.

For the first time in hours, or maybe even days, you feel unburdened, like a weight has been lifted off your shoulders. Your daughter, now awake in her crib on the other side of the door, is singing a mangled version of "The Star-Spangled Banner," at which you can't help but snicker. It's loud enough to drown out the creaking of her door, and so you're both surprised when your son shouts "You're awake!" at the top of his lungs. His sister screams with delight, and they both scream when you burst out of the closet and yell "boo!"

"Mommy, what were doing in there!?" your son asks, laughing.

"I was hiding!" you say with a smile.

"You're always hiding, mommy!"

This causes you to laugh heartily, and he wraps his arms around your neck as you scoop him up off the floor. You're hugging both of them when you hear your phone vibrate from back inside the closet. Rick has responded to Janie's text.

What did he say?
