Duh

"Oh. I'll be your ghost pal." You say, nodding vigorously.

"Great. I’ll grant you the powers of my servants. You are invisible unless you want to be seen, you can move objects, you have limited interaction with people, some level of mind control, you can pass through walls, Oh! And you can possess people. Isn't that fun. Only catch to this unlimited power is you have to follow my orders when I give them to you, otherwise, you'll be replaced and damned for all eternity. Have fun!"

Suddenly, you open your eyes and you’re back in your car, deep in the river. You look down and see yourself, covered in blood, joints pointing in unnatural angles. You were definitely dead.

"Holy shit. I'm a ghost." What else could you have said. The voice returns in your head.

"I don't really have a task for you yet, so you can enjoy being a ghost for a while. Maybe visit someone you left here on Earth..."
