Chapter 51 by Almax Almax

Press the button?

Duh!

You might not agree with the way Delilah approaches conversation, but she's definitely still on your side when it comes to class activities like this. At least, probably. If something bad happens to you after pressing this then maybe not, but at the moment, it's leaning more towards you two being on the same side. Actually, this might not be such a good idea after all.... oh, whatever, even if it was completely up in the air (which is actually might be), pressing buttons is fun and that edges the decision.

KKRA-CKOOOM!

WOAH! The bridge erupts into a huge ball of orange fire as you press the button, a wave of hot air blowing into you and the ground shaking slightly beneath your feet as pieces of charred wood rain down. The bridge itself, if anything remains of it, is totally obscured from view by a big cloud of smoke.

Did... you just did that, didn't you?? Delilah rigged the bridge to explode? When did she find the time?!

The smoke clears, revealing that there is actually nothing left of the bridge at all. Its wreckage lies in the stream it was once over the top of, momentarily forming a sort of dam before the stream's water build up enough to push the pile of blackened wood over to flow it out the other end. Unmoving in the stream and equally blackened is the body of the monster that had been fighting Delilah, completely destroyed.

"What- when did- how did you--"

"Alright everybody, come in!" Your questions are cut off by Professor Phoebe, as she jumps down from the hut's thatched roof and calls out to you and your classmates. "It's evaluation time."

Evidently, at some point during your debacle over here, Cameron finished off the other monster. Possibly with help from Jace, possibly not, but your focus is still very much on what's going on right here as Delilah steps across the cold stream one boot at a time, getting a bit wet in the process but moving cautiously enough that falling over isn't a problem. As she approaches you to walk along the gravel path up to Professor Phoebe, she barely even regards you -- just holds out her open hand for the device back. Or maybe to walk together holding hands.

"Wait, hold on." You say, still working to get your head fully around everything. "Why did I have to press the button? Couldn't you have just done that when you landed?"

"Yeah, but it kept you out of the way." She says, still holding out her hand. She starts tapping her foot impatiently. "If I hadn't given you a job you'd have gotten involved and in the way. Give me back my detonator."

Oh. Well -- that seems like quite a big risk for her to take. You could've blown her up on accident.

Irritatedly, Delilah reaches down and snatches the device out of your hand, before marching over towards Professor Phoebe and the rest of your class already gathered around her. You stay still for a bit longer, then quickly run to catch up with her. She's careful to stay a few steps in front of you the whole time, oddly cold again all of a sudden, but the two of you arrive at roughly the same time.

There's still a good bit to unpack here, you feel. For later.
