Chapter 7

Which option do you choose
Dream deeply through the night, waking to find a note.
Under the Landrum, you reach depths of sleep so profound that it almost feels like drowning. Your dreams are both vivid and disjointed at the same time. Broken down into fragments of your life. The examination hall at the London School of Medicine, the faces of your classmates, the sting of dismissive remarks from senior physicians who thought women were ill suited to practice medicine. All things that you find yourself dreaming about and somewhere you hear the echoes of your deceased mother's voice.
When you wake, it's a slow process as both your mind and body feel heavy and uncooperative. For a moment, you simply lie, still letting as you notice that your throat is dry. That's when it all hits you, and you start to remember the disturbing events of yesterday. You remember arriving at the Ashford Institute. You remember being mistaken for a patient who, to your knowledge, never arrived. And most of all, you remember the restraints.
You look down at the restraints for a moment, taking in that everything you remember is real and not some vivid nightmare. That's when you notice it a folded piece of paper positioned on the Canvas platform. It's close enough that you could have rolled onto it during your sleep, yet far enough that it couldn't have arrived by accident. Someone definitely placed the paper there. The question is, will you reach for it and discover who?
Your choices
Reach for the paper and try to figure out who it's from. Maybe it's from someone who's willing to help.
Grab the paper and quickly hide it in your clothes. You don't want someone to see it when they do their morning check.
Leave the note assuming it's a trick.
What's next?
Mistaken identity at the Ashford Institute
A first person story
You are Dr. Abigail Winters, the newly appointed director of the Ashford Institute. Having arrived a day early, you decide to head straight for the institute. Unfortunately for you, the staff of the institute has been told to expect the arrival of a female patient matching your height and age. When you arrive at the institute, you are expecting to be greeted by your fellow professionals. Instead, you find yourself being mistaken for a patient by the staff. Can you convince them that there's been a mistake? Or will you end up undergoing treatment at the very institute you were appointed to run?
