The book had been the first one you reached for.

At first you thought you thought it was going to be in Japanese and that you wouldn't be able to read it. But no. The cover was decorated with pretty Japanese script but the book itself seems to be a translation from a Japanese fantasy story.

The world of Dragon Clone Knights is a grim one. Most of the world had been wiped out by the twin horrors of a rampant virus and a series of deadly war. Nowhere is safe any more, armed gangs roam the wilderness looking for their next victim. Even worse, mutants are now brave and coordinated enough to try testing the defenses of the few fortified villages which have sprung up in the ruins of what where once giant cities.

You are just a young woman. A refugee. Someone who's escaped their village just before it fell to the blue skinned mutants who attack during the night. It seems likely that everyone you knew - even your father, sister and brother are now dead. Now is not the time to cry or even morn for the dead. Now is the time to escape!

With the sounds of the rampaging mutants and your burning village fading behind you you scrabble over the ruins of the pre-war city. Many of these buildings are large and intact enough to hide in - perhaps try and last out the night - but doing so is dangerous. The mutants will likely explore the surrounding area.

The alternative? Try and push on despite the lack of night and the dangers. You'd heard rumors of another armed village of pure blood humans two days travel to the north.
