Chapter 5 by Jizzrar Jizzrar

Let's delve deeper with...

Divine Champions

These individuals go by many different names in the land of Aesyr. In the the Allied Coalition they are “The Blessed Ones”, in the Fey Court they are “Avatars”, and in the Kor’ghal Horde they are “The Chosen”. However they are called, they are one in the same.

Individuals blessed by the gods to be their champions in the mortal realm. Typically this is bestowed by the gods that are in power designated by the lottery, however certain exemptions can be made. When a strong enough connection between the realms of mortals and divine are strong enough, any of the pantheons, or even creatures powerful enough yet not in the pantheons, can give their blessings to mortals.

Also typically, if the godly entity is not in power or not even a fully fledged god, this blessing comes with a trade, a price, or an oath. The gods who find themselves in power usually pick individuals they sense would make an impact on the world and try to capitalize on their future deeds by offering their blessing, hoping to increase their own cults so they can be strengthened by new beliefs and worship.

The most common of non-godly blessings typically come from powerful spirits or entities in the mortal realm, or even that in the other planes. These come in the form of Elder Trees (technically children if the world tree that spread throughout the land), fey spirits that own territory outside the glades, demons and devils, eldritch entities, elementals, and so on. Creatures that are so powerful in their respective realms, and especially in the mortal realm, they could ascend to godhood.

Actual gods are rather stingy with their blessings and magic. Not any old priest or crusader can just acquire these things from their gods without excessive and fervent efforts. The gods only give out these gifts to those they know will be influential and important from their divination, or someone they trust to be capable of upholding their end of whatever bargain they strike up. Non-godly entities tend to give out these blessings and abilities for their own motives, not ones to shy away from opportunities.

These champions typically become cultural icons for their people, living myths and legends for the supernatural abilities bestowed upon them. Even those that try to stay out of the limelight are often found in situations where tales of them are told through the ages, as their natural power is a magnet for many troubling powers out in the world.

They are figures to be adored and worship, feared and respected, or even a challenge to be overcome by some. The only thing is certain for these champions...they are destined for great and terrible things.

End of lecture.
