Dinner at the Rivera's

Carlos stood there exhausted, hands on the counter watching his dinner turn beneath the orange light. The whirring of the microwave almost put him to sleep, but the sudden beep brought him back to reality. He carried the plate over to the table and sat down. He picked up a fork but his wife's glare halted his actions.

"Honey, I said I'm sorry."

"I get it. I get the job. I get the late hours. I knew what I was signing on for when I became your wife. But you don't call and say you'll be home in 15 for dinner, then show up an hour and a half later with no call. NO CALL Carlos. For all I knew you had been in an accident or..." She couldn't bring herself to say the words about her biggest fear as a cop's wife.

Carlos knew there was nothing more he could say. He looked down and started eating his dinner. "I've got to do something special for her," he thought. "Maybe get Lisa out of the cabin one night and have a date night, just the two of us." He made a mental note to pick up some wine and steaks.

Lisa loved her parents and they didn't fight a whole lot, usually just normal stuff. But since getting to the cabin she had sensed a strange tension in the air. Her dad had often told her she had inherited his instincts, and something felt really off between them. She decided she needed to get out of the cabin for a while.

"Mom, Dad I'm going for a hike, be back in a while."

"Be safe, call me if you need anything," her Dad replied.

"Whatever."

Despite her verbal dismissal, she was glad she had a dad like him to look out for her. And not just him, but the other cops too. Her mind then drifted to Ranger Matheson and his brown eyes. "Maybe I'll run into him," she hoped.
