Differing opinions

“I could have sworn I put it in my bag” Grace said, continuing to route through her bag to find the missing room card.

“Oh yeah, we went and checked what the breakfast options would…” you started to explain, going through what you had planned before in case this question ever came up.

Emma on the other hand seemed to panic and took the card that she still had on her and tried to stealthily throw it onto the dresser at the side of the room, the card clattering against it even with a pretty good throw.

Grace obviously heard the noise and would have been less suspicious of your answer if not for the fact that you stopped mid-way through as you saw the card fly across the room.

With a look to Emma, the immediate look of regret flashed across her face. You had done plenty of stupid things on impulse but it reiterated that the KDK intelligence upgrades helped you with some things and other things were left alone to keep you looking like an idiot.

“So…do you want me to just ignore what just happened or are we gonna talk about it?” Grace asked, her attention more on Emma than yourself.

Emma looked like she didn’t want to be the one this conversation focused on and after you had got rid of some of her worries about you adding new subjects the worry she had left was why Grace had chosen the room she did.

“We went down to the front desk to ask about the rooms again. They said they had spares but they also said they had some last night as well. Your reaction was a bit weird when we got to the room and if were talking truthfully, we actually want to keep the room with just one bed but we don’t know why you booked it in the first place? Or lied about it when there were other rooms” Emma admitted, wanting to know the answer before it became too late to ask.

Grace sat down on the bed at the side of Emma instead of standing up and there was a few seconds of silence before she actually started to speak.

“...Honestly, things with me and Max hadn’t gone much further than some teasing and kissing when I first booked the room. I was thinking more along the lines of wanting to see how he would react and maybe flashing him once or twice. Then we had a shower together…” Grace started to explain, stopping to see Emma’s reaction to the shower before she realised that of course she knew about that.

“And then I reconsidered but I still didn’t change it. Then there was some stuff at the gym and then… There were plenty of times where I thought things were going too quickly but it always led to me thinking ‘let’s wait and see’ so I never cancelled it” Grace continued, going into more detail than you had expected she would have.

“So it just started from wanting to tease Max?” Emma asked, wanting to make sure.

“Yes that was my intention, although it’s turned into a lot more than that” Grace replied with a smirk and a look your way.

“And I’m very happy that it turned out like that” you added, getting a smile from Grace and a jab to the side from Emma.

Emma seemed to think on what Grace had said but with both you and Grace waiting on her, it wasn’t long before she shook herself out of her thoughts and pushed them aside.

“Right, we did really check the breakfast options like Max said so should we head on down?” Emma said, getting up off the bed.

“Sounds like a great idea” Grace confirmed, agreeing with her daughter and putting an arm around her shoulder once she got up.

You followed along behind them and all three of you left the room to go get breakfast. While you were still behind them, you pulled out your phone and felt the need to check something while both of them couldn’t see.

It was still early in the morning by your usual standards and incredibly early for Emma but you checked the KDK to see if your father was up or not. You could see the distance figure change as you walked down the corridor but it wasn’t moving any more than that, suggesting that he wasn’t traveling anywhere either.

The distance looked to be roughly where the house was but you couldn’t know for sure without doing some testing which you weren’t in the mood for. Knowing he wasn’t on the move gave you some relief and you didn’t feel a rush to get through breakfast as quickly as possible.

The check on the KDK was only a quick one and you stopped looking at your phone by the time you got to the elevator but when you looked up, you could see Grace was giving you a look while Emma was talking to her.

“So, what’s the plan for today?” Grace asked, all of you now on the elevator where you couldn’t exactly run away from the conversation even if you wanted to.

“Well, we can see if the tracker and his car are still at the house when we get there and go from there. I guess my father’s plans decide what we do for the most part but I do want to get a closer look at the house” you explained, not planning any further than that.

“Sounds good to me. Do you know if we need to be in a rush or…” Grace hinted, motioning to your phone still in your hand that you hadn’t put away.

Normally you would have put it straight back in your pocket but the fact that you were still clutching it tightly within your grasp was enough to tell you that you were stressed even if you didn’t want to admit it.

“No we should be fine, no rush needed” you replied, actually putting your phone away this time.

The elevator dinged and you all stepped out, taking a moment to show Grace where the hotel restaurant was before you all found a table. You all got your food individually from the buffet and while you didn’t have anything important in mind to bring up, the conversation was nice to have.

It felt slightly strange to just talk about normal topics given the purpose of the trip and after last night but it need help lighten the mood even more and you felt yourself loosen up a bit.

You and Emma caught Grace up with what was going on at school and while you had been paying a lot less attention to your friends recently, Emma seemed to have stayed somewhat in the loop and could catch you up as well. Everyone had been busier from the sounds of it due to exams coming up next week so there wasn’t any blame pointed your way for ignoring them. Your online friends however might have a few words to say about you being offline for so long.

The conversation continued like that until all of you felt like you couldn’t eat anymore and you had your final moments before the day started for real.
