"This is a really bad idea." Ryan said, staring across the straight. "We could get caught. We'll probably get caught. Actually no, we'll probably drown."

His dad roared. Somehow Ryan was starting to understand his bear-dad. What a fucked up situation this was.

"I know we can't just cross the border like this...but at least we're alive." Ryan argued.

After spending the night in the cabin, they'd made their way out of the mountain and back to where they parked their car...only to find it missing. That left them in a foreign country with no passport, no money, no phone. Oh, and he was a girl and his dad was a fucking bear.

After the training camp they were supposed to go to Seattle. Ryan was starting University and they were going to live with his old hockey buddy. His dad was insisting that they swim across the strait of Juan de Fuca and go to see his friend. Ryan thought it was overall a terrible idea, but somehow he found himself on Vancouver Island without any better plan.

His dad roared again and suddenly slapped him on the back. In their original bodies it would have just been a love tap. Now it sent him flying forward, landing on his knees in the water. "Fuck Dad!" He cried, cringing at his own high pitched voice, "You're a bear, remember!"

His dad shrugged, then lumbered forward into the water himself. Without waiting for Ryan he started swimming. Fuck, Ryan thought. He couldn't leave his dad behind, he'd got shot walking around a city alone. He considered himself to be a really good swimmer, but he was a little nervous in this new body across such a huge distance. He'd never done anything like this before. Frankly he couldn't figure out why he was going along with it, it was almost like there was some voice whispering in his ear telling him to do it. With a sigh, he got up and walked into the ocean.

Simon Turner was in good spirits. His friend Gavin Santos was coming to live with him for the next few years. He hadn't seen Gavin in years then he'd called to say his son had gotten in to Furinkan University right here in Seattle, actually just a stone's throw from his home. Of course he'd offered to let Ryan stay with him. He thought it was just a little strange when Gavin asked if he could come too, but Simon was thrilled at the idea of his friend coming to stay. In fact the two of them had spent a lot of time over the summer discussing it. Simon had a plans for the Santoses.

First of all Simon and Gavin had grown up playing hockey together, and always dreamed of opening up their own hockey school. Now they were actually going to do it. They had to pass on their special training techniques of anything goes hockey after all. Second, they'd agreed to marry Ryan and his daughter Scarlett. The kids hadn't agreed yet, much less even been informed, but Simon and Gavin were convinced they'd both agree. After all both dads were pretty sure their kids were virgins with almost no experience with the opposite sex and little prospects in that area.

"Hey Dad, mail's here." Scarlett said, tossing a pile onto the coffee table. Simon leaned forward and picked up a postcard.

"Huh..." He said as he read it.

"What's up?" Scarlett asked.

"My friend Gavin, and his son, remember I told you about them? They are coming soon...I hope they are alright. The handwriting is atrocious, like he had his thumb chopped off or something. And why a postcard...?"

As he stared at the postcard he could faintly hear the tv in the background, "In other news a 7-11 employee in B.C. experienced a major shock on Tuesday when a bear entered the store. CityNews brings you the exclusive footage, watch as the adult male black bear calmly walks into the store on it's hind legs. The bear, apparently used to living near humans, didn't appear anxious at all around the customers already in the store. It loaded up a shopping bag with energy bars and Gatorade before leaving. Even stranger the bear returned a moment later to steal a pre-paid postcard. We're reached bear expert Dr. Elena Horowitz to discuss this strange behavior..."

"These weirdos are really going to be living with us? I don't want to live with a boy!" Scarlett complained.

"I'm a boy, aren't I?" Simon said.

"You don't count Dad. Now maybe if Gavin had a cute daughter instead we could be friends or something..."

DING DONG

"Oh, can you get that Scarlett?" Simon asked.

"Ya sure." Scarlett left and Simon heard the door open. There was silence and then Scarlett called out, quietly but urgently, "Dad...there's a bear at the door."
