Chapter 40 by SingingLark SingingLark

How shold Liandra react?

Defiant

Liandra looked straight in the Emperor eyes and refused to bulge a single step. She had faced worse, she even fought a dragon and triumphed. A pang of sadness assailed her heart as she remembered her companions, but this wasn't a time for reminiscence. "You may think you are making a good impression, but I can hardly see how that could be, nor what you hope to achieve by coming here."

"My objective is peace, Lady Liandra. I traveled because the crows gather, and to wait would only guarantee a feast for them." He offered graciously, and Liandra fought the urge to snort. But her answer was by no means candid "As you may have gotten by now, your actions leave much to be desired. You intruded on our presence, call foul magic against my guests, and I doubt your honor guard is anything short of a group of dark wizards:" the knight in the Nocterian group chuckled, but Kendal slowly began to lose his stern.
"Oh really. My behavior leaves much to be desired? It would appear that you have not seen Mortimers **** on me. How his sword went straight for my head. I merely did what was necessary to defend my self, Princess." Kendal spat at her.

But instead Liandra closed her eyes, and remembered her adventure. How she felt powerful back then. Capable. Necessary. She remembered Rodrick, of the daywatch. She remembered the shadow demon she faced. And the song she used back then.

Everyone stopped when Liandra began to sing, her melodious voice bathing the yard with its beauty. The princess was mesmerizing, and it took them all long precious moments to notice she had began to glow; the radiance soon vanquished Mortimer's prison, as well as any trace of shadow magic in the invading group.

"You are a magic user. That is... unexpected." The emperor remained still, but Liandra could tell his tone changed. But it wasn't fear. Closer to... respect. "But you should know we have far more than shadow magic to defend ourselves."

"Don't threaten me, Kendal. And don't threaten my guests." The thrill of the combat was intoxicating, the adrenaline pumping through her heart. She had no idea how she could hope to best these dark sorcerors, but surprisingly she wasn't afraid. "But I am not unreasonable. Say your business, and then you can begone."

Will Liandra trust them to be honorable?
