Chapter 10 by FlightoftheBeers FlightoftheBeers

What side do you end up on?

Defense, unfortunately

"Aubrey, we can't agree to this. He's 100% guilty!" You shouted as you sat across from her in her office.

"I know that! Everyone knows that! But everyone has a right to an attorney and the money he's paying us... it's a lot, John." Aubrey sighed, biting her lip. She hated the idea of defending him as much as you did. Even worse, he'd specifically requested you as one of the conditions to his payment.

You knew what he was doing; he was going down, but he wanted one last laugh at you before he wound up behind bars. You had to give him the best defense you could, per your license. Even a cursory glance at the paperwork yielded the results you expected; the best you could hope for is a plea deal for reduced jail time.

At least he would end up in jail.

The following day, he sat in the office with you and Aubrey. "Mr. Tanner—"

"Pleaze, call me Jake," he corrected Aubrey with a smarmy grin directed at you.

"...right. Jake. We've looked over the case and it looks like the best we can get is a guilty plea with a reduced sentence—"

"No dice, sugartits. I want a not guilty verdict," he crossed his arms and leaned back.

"Watch it," you replied. "We can still drop you as a client regardless of how much you're paying us."

He held his hands up in feigned surrender, "fine, fine. But I'm serious about the not guilty verdict. I don't care how you get it, but you will get it for me."

"That's going to be impossible," you replied. "The DA's case against you is too solid."

He sighed and turned to Aubrey, "can I talk to you without him in here? He's being very negative."

"He's the attorney on your case," Aubrey replied.

"Perhaps I wasn't clear, Ms. Black; I have a complaint about one of your employees that I wish to discuss with you. I can't very well do that with him here." He glanced back over to you and then to her.

She looked at you and you rolled your eyes before standing up and walking out, "whatever. I'll be in my office."

What was the complaint about?
