Defeat the eye

Using your spear as a support, you do your best to stand and face your enemy. The eye is squinting and bloodshot from the two strikes you got in earlier, and the countless tentacles hovering around you are knocking into each other like they’re competing for the best angle to attack you from. You manage to assume a battle stance just as they jump into their ****.

Dodging the tentacles turns out to be much easier than you expected. They seem to bump into each other a lot, or miss their mark by a hair. Your accuracy stat is pretty shit, you think. Then, Wait, maybe I did that? You look at the eye, half shut and bloody. Of course. You can’t exactly see me very well right now, can you? Well that makes this easy! You make stabbing the eye your main objective, ducking and dodging tentacles as they come while occasionally getting in shots at the eye. Each time you get a hit in, it roars in pain and sends all its tentacles at you at once. Each time it does this, you simply stab it again, then dash away while the tentacles are momentarily stunned.

On your fifth rush of the eye, your spear penetrates deeper than it has any of the previous times. You pull on it, but it refuses to leave the eye, and you’re **** by the incoming tentacles to retreat. With your back to the wall, directly underneath the white-flamed torch, you watch as several black tentacles frantically attempt to remove the spear from the eye. All they end up doing, however, is breaking it to bits and leaving the tip buried deep inside.

There goes my spear, you think. I was hoping to get a little more mileage out of that thing.

The swarm of tentacles flares out in frustration as the beast lets loose another floor-shaking roar. Countless black appendages fly towards you. A quick side step, and you’re inside its reach yet again. You take another step, eying the broken shaft of your spear still protruding from the pupil of your foe. Tentacles come at you from the side, and you jump over them. One step closer to the eye, and a tentacle grazes your arm. Two quick leaps, and you slam your fist into the broken end of your spear, punching the tip even deeper into the eye. Tentacles finally manage to grab you and toss you backwards into the wall as the creature roars once again.

Both the eye and the tentacles shake wildly for several seconds as its roar becomes a high-pitched scream, and then everything goes perfectly silent and still. The tentacles fall to the ground. Starting at the tips, they begin to disintegrate into dust, until all that remains is the eye, barely open at this point. It opens slightly, staring directly at you, then slowly closes, disappearing completely. You stand in shock for a few seconds before a small object rolls out of the darkness towards you. It rolls all the way to your feet, and you pick it up to examine it.

In your hand is something like a glass eyeball. It’s like a mini version of the thing I just fought, you think, only without the tentacles. Maybe this has some magical uses? I should keep it, just in case. You pull off your rucksack and drop the loot inside. Then, turning your gaze to your surroundings, you start to wonder where you are.

“I must be in one of the starting areas,” you say aloud, looking at the white torch on the wall. A quick check of the walls reveals none of the burn marks that you left behind. “Can’t be where I started, though.”

“That is correct,” says a voice you recognize immediately. “This was my starting point.”
