Chapter 18 by Omega98 Omega98

Can Dawn fend for herself?

Decidedly less well than her "companions"

Dawn cursed as the big orc moved back towards the road. She was frazzled that he'd followed her, upset that she hadn't noticed him, startled when she'd seen him, and frustrated that he'd interrupted her casting. She could have (and probably should have) been nicer to him, but she was flustered. And she wasn't the most pleasant person when she was flustered.

She was prepared to go back to casting when she spotted them, a group of goblins headed her way.

"Fuck!" Dawn cursed again.

She was about to make a run back for the road after the orc when she saw him charge the group. Her eyes could barely comprehend what happened when he slammed into the mounted goblin, and clearly neither could his comrades. She sat stunned at the sight for a moment, and was filled with something akin to awe, and more than a little bit of hope. If the goblins were focused on the orc, then maybe they wouldn't notice her.

That hope was dashed when she heard a noise and turned her attention towards it.

Three more goblins were charging right at her!

In a panic, Dawn stumbled to her feet and took off towards the road and the orc. If she could get between them then maybe the goblins would turn to fight the orc and in turn he could fight them. Then she could maybe find some way to help him.

'There's still a way out of this!' she thought.

With the adrenaline pumping through her, Dawn's feet didn't hurt at all anymore. Which was good because she wasn't the fastest runner; but she wasn't the slowest either. She didn't have to be the fastest though, she just had to be fast enough. She dared a look backwards and saw that one of the goblins had fallen behind. Be it due to exhaustion, or poor foot speed she didn't know. What she did know was that the other two were right on her heels.

Literally.

One of them reached out and grabbed a hold of her ankle as her leg came to a crest in its stride behind her. With a hard yank backwards Dawn felt herself suddenly both airborne and earthbound. She impacted with a hard thud that momentarily startled her. An intense panic ran through her before she realized that the goblin had overextended himself, and fallen from his mount; his grip on her foot wasn't that strong.

With a hard twist she broke his grip and pulled her foot free. She struggled back to her feet when she felt two powerful arms wrap around her prodigious chest and haul her off her feet into the air. One hand came up and covered her mouth to prevent her from screaming and for a moment Dawn thought that was the end.

Then she felt it...

What's in store for the wandering "group"?
