Chapter 9 by Twisted314 Twisted314

What's next?

Daze

Once I had put my thoughts in order the procession was already done with people on their way out to start their day in earnest.

I was one of the last few remaining and had honestly not registered much.

Most of the rest of the day was a blur to me. As I spaced in and out many times staring blankly into space thought-out the day, sometimes not even looking at my status screen but just gazing absentmindedly at the scenery around me.

Thankfully the girl ,that had woking me up this morning, noticed something was off about me and without prodding nor asking any questions took my hand in hers and pulled me along. I would only later find out during lunch that her name was Caro.

After what amounted to a simple breakfast we went out to the field and into the vineyard where it turned out we weren’t just on a hill but actually inside a small valley with a village down below us.

It seemed everyone split off for different chores and we were in line for field work that day helping pluck the grapes and gathering them in buckets.

We all met once again for midday prayer and lunch before classes started in the afternoon.

Not that I really paid much attention as I silently looked around taken all of this in. Going through the day in a daze.

Before I knew it I found myself back in that small room I would now call my own, dropping onto the bed too exhausted to even disrobe.

This time taking the proper stairwell on the other side of the corridor instead of the roundabout way through the library though.

With my eyelids heavy and mind exhaust I drifted asleep.

After sleeping for what felt like a handful of hours I woke up in the middle of the night. I wasn’t sure what time it was as I had no clock around and didn’t even know when exactly I fell asleep. For all I knew it had still been bright outside at that point, but now the moon was high in the sky shining its soft light through my window.

I had only planned to lie down for a bit but actually fell asleep.

I must have been more shocked than I thought as only now I was beginning to think clearly.

Going through the events of the day one by one.

For now I had played the part of the nun Claire following her routine and the instructions of the others as best I could.

I suppose my reconnaissance mission turned into an undercover one.

Not that it would make much of a difference even if found out. At worst they might think Claire had a screw loose or had lost her mind. But the monastery would still do its best to raise her into a proper priest even under those circumstances.

That precious was her talent that they simply couldn’t give up on her, after all there were less than a dozen across the entire continent with her level of compatibility for divine power.

In her generation there were likely no more than two or three comparable to her and as it would turn out later her talent was even greater than all the others.

So the worst they would likely do was give me house arrest even if I told them everything, without evidence I would simply be a madmen or in my case now a crazed woman I suppose that the church couldn’t give up on.

So as long as I didn’t do something heretical they would likely overlook most of my oddities.

Despite the warning from the nun earlier no scolding came after all, as if they simply let it slide, I wasn’t sure if this was normal behaviour for Claire or if maybe something had happened yesterday that gave me a convenient alibi for being so out of it today.

I would need to find out the next opportunity I get if I wanted to play the part.
