Chapter 4
by Yabusa
Find some friends, or go it alone?
Daniel the science expert
You thought for a while about whether you should tell anyone about the coin and its side effects, and you realized there wasn't much to tell right now. To most other people, you'd picked such a boring talent that no one would bother even considering that the coin might be real. As for the side effects... maybe if they happen, having someone nearby would be useful.
You headed up to the top floor of your apartment complex, and knocked on the furthest door down the hall. You didn't know if Daniel would be around, but if he was, he'd probably be the one who could tell you whether Emilia conned you for some reason. Luckily, Daniel does open the door, holding a bowl of cereal and continuing to eat while the door swung further open. "Oh, hey John. No class today?"
"Something came up," you said as you stepped in. "What would I say if I told you I acquired some magical stuff today?"
Daniel pushed up his glasses, before he set his bowl down on the nearby countertop. "What, like a plus four Gauntlet of Freezing? Is Terry the dungeon master again?"
You shook your head. "No, I mean like... what if I said I had a coin that could do real magic?"
Daniel crossed his arms, looking at you skeptically. "Well in this purely hypothetical situation, because magic isn't real, I'd ask to examine the coin and then I'd want to see some sort of demonstration. What kind of magic are we talking about? Do you shoot fireballs? Speak to animals?"
"I get better at math, supposedly."
Daniel rubbed his forehead, the kind of thing he does when he hears something that feels so incredibly stupid he needs a moment to process it. "...for the sake of this hypothetical, can it be fireballs? This is why you will never DM a game, by the way."
Growing impatient, you pulled the coin out of your pocket, holding it out in front of you. "I'm serious, I was given this earlier, but I don't know if it works or not yet, plus I don't know the possible side effects."
"...So you're gullible," Daniel says in the particular drawn-out way he does when he's pounding the nails into the coffin of an absurd premise.
"It was given to me by Emilia King herself."
"So you're a gullible liar." Daniel takes off his glasses to adjust them a bit. "Is this all you came over for today, or did you want to talk about that test next week, or what?"
You shook your head. "I just need your help on figuring out how to test this. This should be easy to disprove, right? Help me pick some math problems that you know the answer to but I wouldn't, flip the coin, I try again."
Daniel covers his mouth with his hand as he thought. "That's very rudimentary, but I'll need a good enough sample size then. If it's just one math problem, you might have a lightbulb moment or just get lucky in an answer. If it was, say, three of the same difficulty and you answered all of them the second time correctly, now I'd be a little more inclined to listen. Also, side effects?"
You shrugged, squeezing the coin in your palm. "Can you just help me for this one dumb thing? You had me picking out scented candles for your mom's birthday last week, this isn't nearly as weird as that." Daniel relented, since you played the Scented Candle card, dealing a crushing blow to any refusal to cooperate on his part that he might have had. He moved over to the table, moving piles of books and papers and his application for a Hideki Labs internship off the surface. "How much do you know about derivatives of cosine?"
"You mean where the idea of two signatures on a document came from?"
"That's all I needed to know. Okay. That would be something from your next semester's math class if you last that long." Daniel started to write down a few problems, specifically from a variety of upper-level calculus courses. He didn't show them to you immediately, but he put down the pencil on the table. "Here you go, five minutes. Can I look at the coin while you work?"
You handed over the coin and sat down. What Daniel wrote on the paper... it may as well have been a foreign language. None of this made any sense to you! You knew the individual components, sort of, but how they came together to produce an obvious value... your five minutes felt like they passed in seconds, before Daniel took the paper from you so you couldn't write anymore. "Blank, blank, blank... seven... blank. Zero correct. That feels like a decent starting point. Now, the theory is that the coin will flip and then you will be able to do these math problems?"
You nodded. "You want to do the honors?"
Daniel shrugged, and tossed the coin onto the table. You looked down, and saw it landed Venus-side up. It felt for a moment like you slipped in your chair... and then you glanced back at a wide-eyed Daniel. "John, what the hell, John! John!?"
"Wait, what--" you stopped. That didn't sound like you. You said the words, but you... didn't.
You looked down, and your eyes grew wide as well as you saw all the fabric pooling up around... some very feminine curves.
"WHAT THE HELL?!" you said, almost loud enough to shake the apartment complex.
Keep panicking? Or finish the experiment?

Coinbearers
A magic coin can grant you mastery of a talent--but every flip puts your gender in peril...
A collector of ancient artifacts discovers a box of strange coins in her storeroom. When given to a person who wishes to excel at a certain skill or talent, they can charge the coin with magic by flipping it. The more charges, the stronger the magic becomes, and the more talented the coin's owner becomes at their chosen craft. The owner of such a coin tied to their talent is known as a Coinbearer. However, the catch of this magic is that the Coinbearer could be gender-swapped, depending on the result of the coin toss. And if they don't keep flipping as time goes on, this charged talent magic will slowly drain away over a week... until all the talent is gone completely.
