Lore!

Creation Myth and the Gods of Idruinn

The Creation Myth

In the realm of Idruinn, where magic flows through the very veins of the land, there existed a creation myth that told the story of how this magical realm came into being. It is a tale of gods, magic, and the birth of the world itself.

In the beginning, there was the Great Tree, Ysirath, surrounded by a vast, empty void, where Magic reigned supreme. Within this abyss dwelled the Elder God; Osus. Much of Osus’ power was intangible, beyond mortal, or even immortal, comprehension, but it is believed to stem from the Great Tree.

As the magic and power of Osus danced in the void, a new world was born, bathed in radiant light and kissed by a shadowy embrace. It was a realm where magic flowed like a living river, infusing every corner of Idruinn with its power, but that power was once only accessible by beings of higher magic, the Gods.

Uncontent with their solitude, Osus began to create additional Elder Gods. First were Aereth and Morrigan, who shared their powers of Light and Dark, and next were Orion and Seldyr. Aereth and Morrigan were named the Elder King and the Elder Queen respectively, and their power grew tenfold. Orion was the strong right hand of the King, but Seldyr was much more a wanderer. To increase his learning and power, Seldyr fashioned a stave from a branch of the Great Tree, and plucked a leaf which he turned into an amethyst. The wound left from this carving bled yet more magic into the world, but more importantly, altered the existing magic, allowing unfettered access to the natural mana of the world.

The Elder Gods soon expanded the Pantheon, creating the Younger Gods. Of the many Younger Gods, Mythral and Iraura are the most prominent. The pair are siblings, but Mythral was the heir, and Iraura the spare. Angered at being overlooked for the monarchy, Iraura took the domain of ****, the opposite of her brother’s life domain. Mythral created the earliest species of Idruinn (Humans, Elves, Dwarves, Giants, and many more), but it was Iruara who allowed their lives to end.

Not long after the creation of life in the realm, Osus, Morrigan and Aereth ascended beyond the celestial plain, an event known as the Great Ascension. This Ascension greatly reduced the natural magic with the world, and mostly healed the wound in the Great Tree, causing far less magic to bleed out.

With Mythral made King, Iraura took the opportunity to leave the safety of the celestial plain as well, and made her home in the empty void of Tartarus. Despite being a Goddess of ****, Iraura created several species of her own, including the Changelings, the Demons and the Dragons.

Laxhyr, the God of Nature, granted the creations of Mythral sentience, which Iraura copied for her own creations. And from that, most Gods stopped creating new things on Idruinn, instead interacting with those already inhabiting the land.

Deities of the Idruinian Pantheon

Elder Gods

  • Osus, the Original Deity - Osus formed the infinite realms at the start of time. Before time itself began, there was only Osus, and after it ends, the Original Deity will remain. No accurate depiction of Osus has ever been found, and so scholars commonly disagree on the specifics of his form. Unlike most other deities, who regularly interact in some way, albeit often indirectly, with Idruinn, Osus does not, instead they remain distant, always watching. They, as well as a few other Gods, ascended beyond the celestial plain a long time ago.
  • Aereth, the Elder King - Aereth was one of the few deities directly created by Osus. He and Morrigan shared the domains of Light and Dark, and both were neutral in all matters. Most deities share some relation to Aereth and Morrigan. Aereth was, before ascension, depicted as a tall kingly figure, broad of shoulder, with a thick golden beard and brushed back hair. His eyes were of the utmost blackness, and he wore iridescent armour, a legendary longsword (called Lightbreaker) on his hip.
  • Morrigan, the Elder Queen - Morrigan was one of the few deities directly created by Osus. She and Aereth shared the domains of Light and Dark, and both were neutral in all matters. Most deities share some relation to Aereth and Morrigan. Morrigan was, before ascension, depicted as a slender, beautiful woman with striking features, and long, flowing, black hair. Her eyes were shining gold, and she wore iridescent gowns, and always had magic flowing from her fingertips.
  • Orion, the Gauntlet of Justice - Orion is the twin of Seldyr, and his domain is Justice. The Twins are the only remaining Elder Gods who did not ascend with Osus. Orion is seen as a huge man, with an incredibly strong frame. He wears silver plate armour, and once wielded a longsword made of fire, but after the Great Ascension, Lightbreaker was passed down to him. He lost his right hand in battle with a demon lord shortly after, the ancient sword was shattered whilst blocking a near unstoppable attack, and so he had the blade reforged into a golden gauntlet he wears on the stump of where his hand once lay. The remaining shards of Lightbreaker were spread amongst Idruinn, and so magical weapons came into existence.
  • Seldyr, the Stave of Magic - Seldyr is the twin of Orion, and his domain is Magic. The Twins are the only remaining Elder Gods who did not ascend with Osus. Seldyr favours many forms, though typically he appears as a middle aged bald man with many tattoos decorating his scalp. He has a well kept grey beard adorned with rune inscribed beads woven into it. He wears dark coloured robes, similar to that of a scholar, but the one constant of his appearance is the thick yew staff he carries in his left hand. The staff, known as the Branch of Mana, is as tall as its wielder and has an amethyst embedded within the top. The Branch of Mana was carved out of the legendary tree between worlds, Ysirath. Due to the open wound in the Ysirath, magic itself bled into the world.

Younger Gods

  • Mythral, God of Life - Mythral is the first of the Younger Gods, and is the son of Morrigan and Aereth. He appears as an old man with long ashen hair and a matching beard. He is aligned with good.
  • Iraura, Goddess of **** - Iraura is the second of the Younger Gods, and is the daughter of Morrigan and Aereth. She is the younger sister of Mythral, though is more powerful. She appears in two forms, one as a stunning young woman with raven locks and matching eyes, and the other as a dragon with scales as dark as pitch. She is aligned with evil.
  • Laxhyr, God of Nature - Laxhyr is one of the few Younger Gods created by Osus. It was he who gifted the creations of Mythral, the humans, the elves and the dwarves, with sentience. Laxhyr appears as a centaur with brown curls atop his scalp and a crown of antler and branch adorns his head. He is neutrally aligned.
  • Numius, God of War - Numius was created by Orion and is one of the Twins of Conflict. He loves to fight, and can only be calmed by his dear sister. He appears as a hulking brute in full plate, whose face is always obscured by a fiery helmet. He is neutrally aligned
  • Ova, Goddess of Peace - Ova was created by Orion and is the other member of the Twins of Conflict. Unlike Numius, she abhors ****, and has made it her personal mission to reduce the effects of her dear brother’s wars. She appears as a veiled woman with pale skin and obscured features. She is aligned with good.
  • Abriss, Goddess of Fire - Abriss is a daughter of the Elder King and Queen, and it is her one wish to consume all in flame. She works closely with her sister, Iraura, to achieve this goal, though even Iraura finds her methods are too far. She appears as a woman made of flame. She is aligned with evil.
  • Sevros, God of the Sun - Sevros is a creation of Morrigan and Aereth, and possesses a secondary version of the powers of Light. He appears as a golden haired kingly figure, similar to the way Aereth once did. Sevros is married to Estyx. He is aligned with good.
  • Estyx, Goddess of the Moon - Estyx is a creation of Morrigan and Aereth, and posses a secondary version of the powers of Darkness. She appears as a young woman of great beauty, with the colour of her hair changing depending on the phase of the moon. She is married to Sevros. She is neutrally aligned.
  • Mimir, God of Knowledge - Mimir is the only creation of Seldyr, and is nearly as clever as his father. For millennia, he served as the apprentice to the Stave of Magic, and although he prefers to remain an observer, he is an established magician. He appears in a similar form to Seldyr, just a slightly younger variant. He is neutrally aligned.
  • Alton, God of the Land - Alton is a creation of Morrigan and Aereth, and he rules all lands. He appears as a giant man made of pure stone, with metallic eyes he views his kingdom with. His alignment fluctuates with his mood, and typically opposes his sister Vukdea’s alignment.
  • Vukdea, Goddess of the Ocean - Vukdea is a creation of Morrigan and Aereth, and her domain is the sea. She appears as a mermaid with seaweed braided into her blue hair. Her alignment fluctuates with her mood, and typically opposes her brother Alton’s alignment.
  • Cindea, Goddess of the Sky - Cindea is a creation of Morrigan and Aereth, and her domain is the sky. She is the mediator between her siblings, and prevents the constant squabbling of Land and Sea. She is neutrally aligned.
  • Enera, Goddess of Luck - Enera is one of the few Younger Gods created by Osus. Her domain is luck, and she is fickle and impetuous. She appears in the form of a noble lady, with blonde hair, but her eyes match that of a snake’s. She is known as Lady Luck. She is aligned with evil.
  • Basmis, God of Destiny - Basmis is one of the few Younger Gods created by Osus. Basmis controls the web of Past, Present and Future, giving him the power of the unlimited observation of time. He appears as an old traveller, and is almost as curious as Mimir. He is neutrally aligned.
