Chapter 5 by Felixfalck Felixfalck

What is Gretchen's decision?

Continue

"I continue, obviously!" Gretchen had a good hunch of where this was headed, and made very little effort to hide her eagerness.

Again the card burst into flames and evaporated. The air filled with anticipation as everyone looked at the redhead.

Suddenly Gretchen's vision began to blur. This caught her by surprise as she expected to get improved vision, not worse. It didn't take her long to realize that she probably should remove her glasses though, and everything became super sharp.

"I have perfect 20/20 vision now! This game is incredible!"

The girls all looked at her in amazement. For their whole life they'd known her as this mousy girl with glasses. She rarely came out of her shell, but for as long as the game had been in the room she'd been bright as a candle. The improvement to her vision only emphasized this energy further.

Gretchen's luck contributed to lightening the mood a little bit. Maybe the game wasn't entirely evil after all. Excitement began to bubble within the group as Himari and Rebecca realized the potential gains they could get from this. As their minds raced thinking about all the things they wanted to change, Gretchen sat and looked at random objects scattered around the room. She'd become completely entranced by her eyes' ability to adjust and see everything clearly, regardless of distance. For someone who'd had to wear glasses her entire life, it was like seeing color for the first time, or hearing music even.

The unfortunate fate of Alice had been completely forgotten by the others by now, completely overshadowed by Gretchen's fortune. It was quite easy to overlook her anyway, as she now sat completely silent in the corner of the room, alone..

Rebecca was next to roll. Despite the initial shock with Alice she was now very much onboard with the game. She leaned over to the gameboard and picked up the die. Without much hesitation she threw it, knocking down Gretchen's piece in the process. Gretchen looked at her with an annoyed look and leaned in to correct her piece. Just as she was about to grab it with her fingers, the piece seemed to raise itself back up to the correct position.

"Freaky.." Upon further inspection, she noticed that her game piece no longer had glasses on it.

"Four!" Rebecca exclaimed once she saw how the die had landed. Her piece moved by itself over to the first green tile on the board.

A young lady so fair,
growing up to be her father's heir.
Skin free to the open air,
kissed by our lovely sun's glare!
Do you continue or chicken out?

"Uhm, it's really cryptic.." Rebecca grew unsure.

"You should continue!" Gretchen chirped in. Easy for her to say, given how insanely lucky she'd gotten with the last card.
"Remember, we have to get at least half way to get the wish, the more of us play, the more likely it is we'll get there in fewer throws!" she added.

The argument made sense, having more players meant that they'd have higher chances of lucky throws that'd propel them to the halfway-point faster. She pondered her predicament thoroughly. On one hand, she didn't want to end up like Alice, who she just now remembered was still in the room with them.On the other hand she wanted to help Alice by getting at least half way. With the annoyingly vague phrasing it was hard to determine what would happen. It made mention of her skin, so maybe that was important to note..

Does she continue or chicken out?
