Chapter 5
by SingingLark
What is the urgent matter?
Conspiracy most foul
"I have reason to believe someone may try to kidnap you, Liandra dear. or worse." Dagor had a letter in his hand, which he handed to her. Liandra was horrified to hear that, it was the first time she ever heard of someone wanting to hurt her, so she took the letter and devoured its contents.
The letter had an urgent tone, and described the 'catastrophe' that would happen if Liandra and Mortimer were to marry. It suggested 'taking out the princess' of the picture, as Mortimer was a skilled warrior, and always well guarded. It was unsigned.
"Gods, who would do something like that?" Liandra noticed she was trembling, and Dagor stood next to her and placed a calming hand on her shoulder. "We don't know. But don't worry, we will protect you." Liandra felt his thick perfume fill her nostrils, it did have a calming effect on her."But... gods, what can I do?"
"For one, be careful. Avoid being alone, or being with only one person. I will give you a magical item for your protection, Liandra, and a bodyguard. You must keep both close, ok?" Liandra nodded. Her eyes ran around the room, imagining enemies everywhere, while Dagor picked a collar from his desk. It was Osmar's holy symbol, probably the most important God for Luxius, Osmar was the god of Salvation and Forgiveness and his holy symbol a sparrow in flight. The item itself was white gold, and with an emerald to mark the eyes.
"The main problem is that, like all magical items, this one is cursed. It will protect you from harm, it is said to be able to withstand even dragon fire, but it will dull your senses. Music, food, it will all lose some of its attractiveness to you. The exception is wine, which will become particularly potent. " And sex, but Dagor didn't disclose that part. "You can enjoy them if you take it off, but please endure it if you can." He handed her the holy symbol, and Liandra put it around her neck.
"As for your protector..."
"Wait, Dagor..." Liandra interrupted
"Liandra, this is for your own good" But she was intent on being heard out. "What if, instead of me just going on with my life, I started helping you?"
"I could... Help sort correspondence, or pen letters, or do anything you think I can do to help." Liandra felt hopeful, it was a strange feeling, to have someone else measuring her up. But she earned for his approval, and when she saw an smile break on his face, she felt victorious. "I didn't think you would so readily change your routine, Liandra. But if you are... sure, we can make this work. We do need to convince your parents first. And the less people know about the plot, the more chance we have to catch the ones involved."
So can Liandra convince her parents to allow her to work for Dagor?
