Chapter 2 by Karbenyte Karbenyte

What do you do next?

Consider the key staff of Aelfryd Hall

As you prepare for the day, you mentally run through a list of things that need to be done around the estate, and people on your staff you need to talk to. Over the years you've sought out the most qualified staff you could find to help you make Aelfryd Hall something closer to your personal vision. You have always tried to make sure your staff are treated exceptionally well: they are all well-paid, well-trained, and given a fantastic benefits package, not the least of which is nearly unlimited enjoyment of the estate facilities that they are responsible for building, maintaining and running. Some of your key staff are:

Aeola Arentavionialis, your assistant. The niece of one of the lawyers who handled your uncle's estate, Aeola was originally supposed to be a temporary hire, on hand only until your inheritance had finalized. However, the two of you work very well together and you soon offered to take her on as a full-time member of the estate staff. As far as you can tell, her wardrobe consists almost entirely of form-fitting, dark-colored business attire - coupled with her Gray Elf features (namely her very pale skin, silver eyes and jet-black hair) presents a very monochrome appearance. Few have seen the humor and warmth hiding just under her no-nonsense, matter-of-fact persona, but with how closely you two have worked over the last few years, you're sure it's there, waiting to come to the surface. Aeola officially lives in one of the on-estate cottages, but is almost never there - she's usually either at your side or in her office.

Heinrich Fahrenter, the chief groundskeeper. The old centaur was one of the first hires when you took over the estate, bringing with him years of experience in property maintenance, gardening, and landscaping. He oversees the main gardening and landscaping staff. Another perk of having him around is that he is ever aided by his devoted wife Lora, a top-tier horticulturalist and botanist in her own right. The two elderly centaurs insist that their advanced age will never get in the way of their work, and they wouldn't even think of retiring - they're too dedicated to the job. The Fahrenters live in one of the on-estate cottages with their granddaughter Eira.

Lady Caronella Fianathia, the staff wizard. You never would have thought you'd have a wizard working for you, but after meeting Lady Caronella you quickly realized keeping her around would have its advantages. It would be hard to say what her exact duties around the estate are, but the immensely clever Light Elf always manages to find a way to make her magics useful: if she isn't casting wards to improve security, she's using her alchemy to devise new drinks or foods for the kitchen. Or she may be researching some long-forgotten relic found in the basement so you can sell it to a collector for a huge profit. Or she's using personal contacts among other wizards to help transport in additional supplies from Earth or Raumina. While her noble line officially ended with the fall of the elven kingdoms years ago, she can be a bit hot-tempered to those who neglect to use her hereditary title. Lady Caronella lives in the third of the on-estate cottages with her "research assistant" Caraway.

Riniella Lyendil, the head maid. Rini as she prefers to be called, is in charge of the cleaning staff and associated maid-related duties. Rini tries to position herself as the ever-kind, always loving, big sister to the rest of the maids working at the estate. Her dedication to her team is only surpassed by her dedication to the estate and its master (i.e., you). To your reckoning she looks the part of the charming, cute maid, and if you didn't know better you'd place her age in the early-twenties. However, as a slow-aging High Elf, she's probably closer to 60. Rini can almost always be found somewhere in the manor, either in the servant's quarters or overseeing the work of the other maids.

Maya Cebollita, the librarian. Maya is a young grad student from a university back on Earth, working on a dissertation on early-post-War reconstruction as it relates to contemporary settlement and homesteading following the establishment of the Bridge Between Worlds (or something like that). She isn't technically part of the staff, and her contributions to the estate have been, for now, mostly providing interesting background information and trivia about the property. Maya has an extra-curricular interest in folk magic and curses, and could talk your ear off about historical traditions and magic practiced by rural peoples of either realm. She can almost always be found in or around the manor's library - she even converted an old, adjoining store room into a sort of bedroom.
