Chapter 337

The Other Guy
Do you see the potential champion?
Clare is right she is very hard to miss
You assumed that the champion's aura would be the give away so you relaxed your eyes and watched as the passengers walked down the gang plank. Most were stretching as soon as they put their feet on dry land, and all of their aura's looked tired and sore. A few weeks at sea takes a lot out of people. More and more people depart but there is no aura that stands out to you. Everyone looked at you as soon as they saw you with curiosity and confusion. You'd kinda forgotten that having no aura was extremely weird, all that time around people who didn't care, or who knew why it was the case. When the trickle of people leaving the ship dries you look back at the passengers, maybe you'd missed her.
When it seemed everyone has left the ship and are sorting our their luggage you walk into the throng. There was no give away that your could see from a distance. Unlike you they must have figured out how to make their aura's look like the average.
It is when you have walked past a few people do you feel it. Turning you head back to the ship you see the edge of an aura approaching the gang plank. The sailors who had been scurrying around the deck part around the aura, looking uncomfortable at it's presence.
You walk towards the gangplank's base to try and get a better view. Clare was right that aura was obvious. Glowing brighter and easily double the size of everyone else's, it still held the tried soreness of every other passenger. When the first tuft of unkempt black hair crested the wood you stopped walking to watch.
The women that came into view was unlike everyone you'd seen before. Not because of any physical characteristic, purely because you'd never met someone not well groomed. Her hair was a mess with tangles, frayed edges and random spikes she'd failed to smooth over. Her eyes were sunken and bagged, dark circles under them suggested she'd not slept, nor had she used magic to revitalise herself. Her face was thin, cheek bone high but overly pronounced suggesting she wasn't eating enough. You thought she had the olive skin of Vatarie but it was so faded from lack of sun she was almost pale.
She worn a buttoned up green waist coat. Her arms were thin with little to no muscle, the coat hid her torso but she was thin. Her legs were covered by a brown pair of pants that ended at her calves and her shoes were lacking socks.
She blinked in the sun and you wondered how much time she'd spent in it over the last eighteen years. She looked at the dock and her eyes locked onto yours immediately. She frowned as she walked down the gangplank. "Hecha." She said staring at Clare.
"Christopher." You said offering your hand assuming she'd given her hand.
"Seu?" She looked at you hand then at you. "Hecha." She repeated.
It took a second before logic kick in. "Hecha?"
She looked at you then unbuttoned the first three buttons on her waist coat and pulled out a crumpled letter. She unscrunched it and shoved it into you hand. It was the letter that Clare had sent her. "Hecha." She said flatly.
"Ah," you read the letter, it was just an invitation to study magic related to advanced teleportation. There was no 'Hecha' anywhere on it. "Do you speak Natiran?"
She sighed. "Yes, why did Anastasia send someone to escort me if they don't speak." She trailed off even though she was very clearly saying that in a language you understood to make a point.
"That's," you look at Clare and saw the bemused smirk, "a fair point about me." You really should have learned her language it would have been simple if you just asked Clare that is entirely on you. "So."
"Take my trunk and escort me to the library." She said blankly. "I'll be over there when you have it." She pointed at a shaded area and hurried towards it, a corridor of people opened for her as everyone avoided the women.
You look at Clare. "She's not what I was expecting."
"Get why I picked her first?"
"Yeah no way your sister is picking her." You went to check for her trunk though had no idea what it would look like. Thankfully you didn't need to know as a sailor waved you over and pointed at a trunk as wide as you were tall. The sailor smirked at you as you grabbed it's sides. When you lifted it without effect the smirk dropped from her face. You hurried to the champion as people pointed out the man carrying such a large trunk.
When you reached her she was clearly trying to get as out of the sun as possible. When she saw you she walked over then opened her trunk, the lid stopped just short of hitting you in the face. She took something out then closed it. When she did you saw something unexpected. She was holding an umbrella, unwrapped a bit of cloth from it she unfurled it and held it over her head. "Library." She said.
"Right." You weren't sure if you should talk to her on the walk or not, it was very public for the sort of things you'd need to say. "We should have a private talk when we get there."
"Are you my assistant?" She asked. "Have you studied teleportation?"
Your mind brings up the ring around your neck and it's ability to return to it whenever you take it off. "In a manner of speaking." It was true of both statements, kinda.
"Fine, hurry." She waved you to lead so you did. Clare hung back and walked underneath her umbrella.
"So what is your name?" The letter she'd given you didn't actually have a name on the address that you'd seen.
What is her name?

The world of Calitian is a world of magic whose sentient inhabitants vary from human to decidedly not. You are rather unexpectedly reborn into this world however you do not get the expected god delivered spiel about said rebirth so you are on your own. This should be interesting.
