Chapter 9 by flyingswan flyingswan

What's next?

Chloe gives you the “good” news

“Keith! I have good news and I have good news. Don’t ask. Let me tell you. So the good news is I’ve decided to let you run the afternoon’s interviews on your own. Call it a trial run. You won’t hear a peep from me during the interview. In fact I won’t even be in the room. But I’ll be listening in over the intercom. The other good news is you’ll get to hear my report for Nina before I hand it in to her. I’ll tell you exactly how you did, and we can talk about it after. So win-win, right? Anyways, ciao. I’ll be in my office.”

Chloe turns and leaves and manners be damned I’m staring at that ass when it’s right in front of me like that. So I’m not getting a single point off Chloe for the whole day? Screw this! I’ll think of something later. Anyways I get through each interview with perfect demeanor and respect. At the end of each interview Chloe chimes in over the intercom with a few words.

“Keith! You’re doing so well. I’m loving just listening to you. Keep it up for me and we’ll get through this!”

“Thanks, Chloe. Say… could you…”

“Not right now, Keith. Just get to the next interview.”

And on it went like that every time. I guess she didn’t like that I was ordering her so much yesterday, and decided she would do something about it today. Score 2 points for Chloe. Anyways, each interview went pretty much just like that until my last one.

“Great, Keith! Anyways, I’m going to be busy during your last interview, so don’t mind me. Talk to you later. Bye!”

Finally gone. I finish the interview without her, and then head over to my desk to find a post-it note next to my mouse. What’s this?

POST-IT: I decided to head home early today. Come by my apartment after work for your final review. Don’t be late. Here’s the address: … - Chloe

She wanted me to go to her apartment just to find out what she’d be saying to Nina? Why couldn’t she just stay at the office til the end of the day? This was so infuriating. She’s just trying to assert herself the same as Nina; dangling my job around me like a treat for a pet dog. Well, whatever. I just have one more day of her, and then I can be out of her thumb. And if I’m clever, in a few weeks I’ll have her under my thumb.

I finish up my work and rush over. No time like the present. I knock politely on the door, and she opens up pretty quickly. The day’s turtleneck already discarded for a plain t-shirt; a seltzer water bottle in hand as she looks on.

“Oh, goodie! Do come in! We have a few things to discuss.”
