Chapter 19 by chutney chutney

Where to go first?

Check out the kitchen

A long worktop runs against the two solid walls - the side wall of the apartment and the wall backing onto the bathroom - and then comes out away from the bathroom, towards the window, to form a U shape. At the end of the worktop against the apartment wall is a large fridge-freezer. Next to this, running away from the wall, is a breakfast bar - a higher counter with more of an overhang and some tall stools underneath it. Between the breakfast bar and the opposite end of the counter, there is a reasonably wide gap that you can walk through. So the kitchen is sort of open plan - there’s no solid wall dividing it from the rest of the flat - but at the same time it has a very clearly defined area.

In the middle of the worktop opposite the window is a large range cooker. You also spot a wider looking cupboard, which on inspection turns out to be a dishwasher. Other than that, the worktop is supported by cupboards and drawers. There are also high-level cupboards above the worktop adjoining the two solid walls.

Most of the cupboards and drawers are empty, but there are some pots and pans, baking trays, cutlery and utensils. On the worktop close to the breakfast bar is a kettle and a coffee machine. There is milk in the fridge, but nothing else. You’ll need to go shopping for food at some point.

A quality looking dining table is located on the other side of the open bit of counter to the kitchen itself. On it is an envelope addressed to Mary and you, which you open to find a “welcome to your new home” card from Phil, Brad and Honey.

Overall the kitchen looks well built, the cupboards and worktop look strong and sturdy. You’re not hungry right now and there’s no food here to cook anyway, but you wonder if there’s any other way you might like to try it out.
