Check it out in the morning

Deciding it's too dangerous, you go to sleep thinking about what it could be. First thing when you wake up, you get your preferred team, Team Fuckable, ready to go. With a limited amount of diesel left in the world, you've begun limiting your use of the vehicles, and this trip is going to be on foot. With only a vague idea of the direction the explosion came from, you proceed slowly and catiously, each person covering the next as they move. Your team works like a well oiled machine, weeks of training and working together paying dividends.

After peeking around a corner, Mills halts the squad and beckons you closer. You run up to her and ask, "What's up? Did you see something?" She points into the street. Looking for yourself, you see an abandonded street with a couple of dead bodies in the road. Some burned out shells of cars, long since cold, and shattered glass complete the scene. You're about to ask what you're looking at, when you realize something about the bodies. They seem... fresh. Something must have gone down here, and recently. The fact that it's in the same direction as the explosion you heard yesterday probably isn't a coincidence. "Have Barnes and Garcia secure the area and let's take a closer look." Mills signals the other two, who quickly take postions.

When you and Mills get to the first body, you take a closer look. "Human, not zombie," remarks Mills. "Can't be more than a day since he was killed." There are multiple bullet wounds on his body. Clearly this was the work of another person.

"This one's a zombie. Hard to tell when it died, but I would guess around the same time." You tell Mills.

"This one was a human, too. But a zombie got him." Mills points at another body, this one with his throat almost ripped out by human sized teeth. The more you look, the more bodies you see, killed by bullets and the undead.

"Something big went down here last night. At least two groups of humans, if not more, and a lot of zombies." You look down the street, the density of the bodies increases in the exact direction you're heading. "Let's follow the bodies. Let them know we are on the move and to stay alert." Following the trail of corpses, you round a corner and find the site of an absolute massacre. Bodies litter the street, and some kind of mechanical wreckage is on the ground as well, leading into a gaping hole in one of the buildings. It's quiet, which is unnerving given the amount of activity that took place here just a few hours ago. You take a knee behind some cover.

Mills runs up to you. "Well, sir, whatever we are looking for, it's in there." She points towards the smashed opening in the building. "Could be pretty dangerous to check it out, but we did come all this way. What's the call, sir?"
