Chapter 5: They Get Punished
Continued from chapter 4:
"Good," I said. "I know that was hard for you." I turned to face Marisol. "Okay, Marisol. Your turn."
The shift in the room was seismic. Marisol was the eldest, the manager, the one who really should have known better. Her capitulation would be the final collapse of their old order. The air felt thick, electric, as all eyes settled on the woman who held the keys—literally, to the store, and figuratively, to their fates.
Marisol didn't flinch, didn't tremble, didn't act out. She stood there, utterly still, her face unreadable. But her eyes were old, like she’d already spent hours in her own private purgatory and surrendered to its verdict. She stepped toward me with a slow, measured calm, her movements the opposite of Brielle’s puppet-lurch or Roxie’s rigid fury.
We waited. Even Nell had gone silent—no more sniffling, just a breathless hush as if the room itself needed to hear what Marisol would say. Brielle’s hands were mashed together, white-knuckled; Roxie stared at a spot on the laminate counter, jaw ticking. All the oxygen was being sucked toward Marisol.
Chapter 5:
She put one hand on the edge of the table, grounding herself. Her spine straightened, as if she could prop up her dignity for a few more seconds before it was yanked away. Her voice was clear, low, and as calm as it had ever been.
"I understand the gravity of my position," she said. No apology, no confession—just a statement of fact. The kind of thing you might hear during a termination meeting. A last, desperate grasp at managerial dignity.
"Not what I asked for," I replied. "Say I, state your name, and confess to being a naughty girl. Please."
A tremor, barely there, passed over Marisol’s face. She realized she’d lost. I wasn’t after her professional remorse or adult dignity; I wanted her personal surrender. The power dynamic had shifted, and she finally surrendered to it. For one second she closed her eyes, breathing deep and slow. When she opened them, the mask was gone—just a woman, stripped of her role, facing the gallows.
Her voice dropped, soft but unwavering. "I, Marisol Cruz... am a naughty girl."
She held my gaze, her face grave, her eyes steady and dry. The last domino fell.
"Very good," I said. In the silence that followed, I let my gaze travel the length of the table, pausing on each of them. "And what happens to naughty girls? Nell, if you please."
The words hit Nell like a slap. She jerked, startled, and looked up from her lap. Her glasses were foggy with tears, her face blotchy, her lower lip trapped between her teeth. The chair dwarfed her; she looked like a child summoned before the principal.
Nell’s gaze darted to Marisol, but found no help there. Marisol just kept her eyes on the table, hands folded. Brielle and Roxie turned in unison, waiting to see if Nell would break again or finally answer.
Nell swallowed hard. Her voice came out so faint I had to lean in to catch it. "Naughty girls..."
She stopped. Swallowed again. Then, with a gasp, "They... they get punished."
"Brielle? Roxie? Marisol?"
The question went around the room like a paddle, and each girl had to take her turn at the block.
Brielle nodded furiously, fingers twisting together in her lap. "Yes, they do. They get punished." The words were brittle, high-pitched, the coquettish lilt totally gone.
Roxie grunted, a single sharp exhale. "Yeah. They pay for what they did." No sarcasm now—just blunt, exhausted surrender.
Marisol met my eyes, her voice steady and low. "We do. Whatever is required to make it right."
"Full marks to Brielle and Nell," I said, letting the praise hang for a beat. "Roxie, Marisol? What happens to naughty girls?"
The distinction was deliberate. I wanted to see how the two would handle the pressure of being singled out.
Roxie’s fists clenched. Her lips curled downward, and she gave a slow, almost imperceptible shake of her head. She wanted to rage, to spit, to refuse—but she’d already lost. She looked at me, and for the first time, I saw the spark of real fear behind the anger.
"They get... disciplined," she muttered. The word tasted like acid on her tongue.
