Chapter 19: A Challenge
[Upgrading to ‘Poison Area +2’ requires 250 Enhancement Points.]
"250 points," Jack muttered, running a hand through his hair. "The scaling on these high-tier skills is brutal. I need to hunt down a lot more beasts if I want to stockpile that kind of currency."
He closed the skill window and turned his attention to his newly reanimated forces. Standing in the massive cavern, the three heavily armored, obsidian-scaled Lava Crocodiles stood there, their eyes glowing with green necrotic fire. Flanking his left and right were his two loyal skeletal Ash Wolves.
"This cave is too valuable to leave unguarded," Jack analyzed, looking at the glittering veins of Blue Demonic Crystals lining the walls. "If another survivor stumbled upon this place, they’d strip it bare. Crocodiles, you three stay here. Patrol the chamber and kill any intruder that tries to touch these crystals. Wolves, you're with me. We're going to find more fights."
With a swift mental command, Jack left the three crocodiles stationed inside the glittering blue sanctuary and squeezed back through the narrow rock fissure, his two skeletal wolves matching his stride.
His primary goal was simple: farm lower-level monsters, stack Enhancement Points, and search for any hidden chests before his territory's protection period expired. But as they navigated a deep basalt canyon, a heavy, resonant chime echoed directly in his mind, and a crimson warning box flashed across his vision.
[System Announcement: You have entered a localized Boss Domain.]
[Warning: The boundary has been sealed. You cannot leave the area until the Domain Boss trial is defeated.]
Jack halted instantly, his boots skidding in the black ash. He turned around, only to see a shimmering, solid wall of heat-distorted red energy blocking the path behind him.
"What the fuck?!" Jack cursed, "I'm trapped!"
Before he could even draw his +1 sword, a bizarre, grinding rumble shook the earth beneath his feet. The familiar obsidian terrain began to violently shift and rearrange. The simple stone pathways and small, bubbling lava cracks were suddenly torn apart, replaced by a massive, thundering waterfall of roaring liquid fire that poured down the canyon wall in the distance.
Within seconds, the entire ground was carved into a terrifying maze of concentric circular channels. No less than twenty interlocking lava rivers now completely circled his position, trapping him and his two wolves on a small, isolated island of dark rock right in the center.
Then, the lava rivers began to boil frantically.
With wet, sizzling splashes, strange silhouettes erupted from the molten currents. They looked like grotesque, heavily armored piranhas, their scales forged of hardened volcanic rock and their jaws filled with jagged, white-hot teeth. Dozens of these lava fish began jumping aggressively from channel to channel, flying through the air around him like a swarm of molten arrows.
"A coordination trap," Jack muttered, tightening his grip on his hilt as his eyes darted from river to river.
Suddenly, one of the massive lava piranhas launched itself high out of the nearest molten ring. With blinding speed, the heavy fish slammed directly into the flank of the skeletal wolf guarding Jack’s left side.
The skeletal wolf, designed for swift land combat rather than handling heavy aerial impacts, was knocked clean off its feet by the sheer force of the blow. Before it could regain its footing, it tumbled backward over the edge of the narrow stone island, plunging straight into the deep, churning currents of the boiling lava river.
A sharp system notification chimed instantly in Jack's mind:
[Notice: You have lost an Undead Summon [Ashen Ash Wolf].]
[Necromantic Rebirth: Would you like to instantly revive this summon? Cost: 200 MP]
Jack stared at the holographic text in absolute, stunned disbelief.
“What the fuck?!”
Before Jack could even process the loss of his skeletal wolf, a thunderous roar shook the cavern. The roaring waterfall of liquid fire at the back of the Domain suddenly swelled, throwing up massive plumes of black ash and white-hot sparks.
Riding atop a massive, cresting wave of surging lava that poured down the cliffs like a thundering avalanche was the Boss.
With a deafening splash, the towering entity dove headfirst into the outer concentric channels. It began swimming through the liquid fire with terrifying agility, its sleek form cutting through the molten currents faster than the swarming piranhas. It zipped through the volcanic maze, gracefully leaping from river to river, closing the distance in a matter of seconds. With one final, powerful bound, the beast launched itself out of the boiling current, flying through the air before landing heavily onto the basalt island directly in front of Jack.
The impact cracked the stone platform, sending a shockwave through Jack’s boots.
Up close, the monster was a terrifying marvel of volcanic evolution. His towering body was forged of dark, hardened obsidian rock armor, with glowing veins of pure magma pulsing rhythmically beneath his thick scales. He had muscular, webbed hands ending in razor-sharp claws, and a fish-like finned head made of cooled basalt rock. In his right hand, he effortlessly gripped a heavy, masterfully crafted trident forged entirely from gleaming, translucent volcanic glass.
As Jack instinctively took a defensive step back, the entity casually twirled his heavy glass trident. With a swift, sweeping gesture to the right, he commanded the surrounding lava. Strands of liquid fire rose from the rivers, forming into bizarre, abstract shapes in the air, swirling and dancing precisely according to his will before he effortlessly flicked his wrist and sent them splashing back into the channels.
Jack’s throat went dry as he gripped his sword hilt, his instincts telling him he was completely outmatched.
“I’m dead,” Jack muttered under his breath.
“Ohhh, don’t worry about that, my boy,” the boss rumbled, his voice deep and echoing with a wet, bubbling chuckle. “If you finish the trial, you might even get rewards. You still have a chance to live.”
Suddenly, the system interface glitched violently, and two overlapping, holographic windows materialized before Jack’s eyes:
[Name: ??????]
[Grade: ??????]
[Race: ?????]
[Level: ???]
[HP: ?????]
[Attack: ??????]
[Defense: ??????]
Beneath the blank, high-level status block, a second, active system interface stabilized:
[Current Name: The Magma-Gill Gladiator]
[Current Grade: Silver]
[Current Race: Fishman]
[Current Level: 5]
[Current HP: 5000]
[Current Attack: 100]
[Current Defense: 100]
The towering Fishman smirked, adjusting his volcanic trident as his burning magma veins flared.
“I have weakened myself for a challenge,” the Gladiator declared, his voice carrying the absolute weight of a boss monster. “If you win the challenge, you will get to have my blessings. And if you lose... you will die.”
