Chapter 17

Chapter 17 by Immortal_CS Immortal_CS

The bedroom was quiet, insulated from the street noise of Darklight City by thick curtains and the heavy, humid air of the impending storm outside. But to Eva, it wasn't quiet. It was never quiet.

Even standing still, holding her breath, she could hear the world grinding on. She could hear the hum of the refrigerator compressor in the kitchen three apartments away. She could hear the rhythmic thump-thump of the bass from a car driving two blocks over. And, most piercingly, she could hear the steady, sleeping heartbeat of her son, Erik, in the adjacent room.

It was a constant, low-level static that had been the soundtrack of her life for twenty years. A reminder of what she was. A reminder of the burden she couldn't set down.

But now, staring at the small object nestled in the black velvet box in Jax’s hand, she saw a silence she had only ever dreamed of.

Eva stood frozen, her eyes wide, her breath caught in a throat suddenly gone dry. She was in a state of shock that bordered on paralysis. The object was innocuous enough at first glance—a sleek, matte-black band of metal and synthetic polymer, no thicker than a ribbon, with a faint, almost imperceptible blue pulse running along its inner seam.

To anyone else, it might have looked like a piece of high-end, avant-garde jewelry. Or perhaps a high-tech fitness tracker.

To Eva, it looked like salvation.

"You..." she breathed, the word barely escaping her lips. "You got it."

She had secretly observed the prototypes being unloaded from secure crates using her abilities. It was a Power Suppression Collar—a piece of black-market tech designed to leash the gods of this city.

She had coveted it. The desire had been a shameful, burning secret in her chest. She had debated stealing it from Marco countless times. She had run the scenarios in her head: waiting for a chaotic night at the club, slipping into the office, disabling the cameras with a localized EMP burst from her fingers, and swiping one.

But the fear had always stopped her. Not the fear of the heist—she was The Shadow, she could steal the teeth out of a lion's mouth without it waking up—but the fear of the consequences. Stealing from the mafia meant war. It meant putting a target on her back, and worse, a target on Erik’s back. The idea of getting caught, of bringing that kind of heat down on her fragile little family, had deterred her every time.

Yet here she stood, in the safety of her own bedroom, and Jax was presenting it to her like it was a diamond necklace.

He had done it. He had walked into the lion's den, right under Marco’s nose, and taken it. For her.

Eva looked up from the box to Jax’s face. He was watching her with a half-smile, his eyes gleaming with a mixture of pride and something darker, more possessive. He looked like a cat that had just dropped a bird on the doorstep, waiting for praise.

"Jax," she whispered, her voice trembling. "Do you have any idea what Marco would do if he knew?"

"I know," Jax said, his voice smooth and unbothered. He took a step closer, the box held out like an offering. "But I also know how much you wanted it. I know how tired you are, Eva. I see it. Even when you try to hide it."

Tears pricked the corners of Eva’s eyes. He saw her.

For so long, she had felt isolated by her nature. The League saw her as a weapon. The city saw her as a myth. Erik saw her as a normal, slightly over-protective mother. But Jax... Jax saw the exhaustion. He saw the woman who just wanted to rest.

She didn't know how to thank him. The gratitude swelled in her chest, overwhelming her caution. The idea of getting her powers suppressed, of effectively turning off the "super" part of her existence so she could lead a normal life, was way too tempting to resist. It was a siren song she had been trying to ignore for years.

More than a simple life for just her, she was interested in this for Erik.

Her mind flashed to the warehouse where she had left Lana. That poor girl... broken, violated, her wings severed. That was the price of being special in Darklight City. That was the cost of the cape. Eva had escaped that fate so far, but her luck wouldn't hold forever.

As long as she had these powers, there was always going to be someone out there trying to get her. A villain looking for a trophy. A government agency looking for a lab rat. A rival super looking for a fight.

And if they came for her, there was always a chance they would go through Erik to get to her.

He was the weak point in her armor. He was the reason she had quit the League in the first place, hanging up the cowl of The Shadow when he was just a toddler. She couldn't risk coming home with enemies trailing her. She couldn't risk him ending up as collateral damage in a war he didn't even know existed.

The safety of her family meant everything to her. It was her only priority. And this choker... this tiny piece of stolen tech... it was a shield. If she wasn't a super anymore, if she was just Eva the human, the target on her back would shrink. She would just be another face in the crowd. Erik could have a stable, risk-free life.

Eva reached out, her hands shaking. Her fingers brushed against Jax’s as she took the box. His skin was warm, solid.

"Take it," Jax murmured. "It's yours."

Eva accepted the delicate gift, pulling the box closer to her chest as if protecting a fragile bird. She looked down at the intricate design of the choker with unmasked admiration. It was beautiful in its lethality. It promised to kill the part of her that made her dangerous, and she loved it for that.

The fact that Jax had the courage to steal it for her, even though he knew the risks involved, made her feel deeply, profoundly grateful. He had risked his life, his standing with the club, his entire future, just to give her peace of mind.

It was the most romantic thing anyone had ever done for her.

"Thank you, Jax," she whispered, her voice hoarse with emotion, looking up at him through wet lashes. "I didn't expect you to go to such lengths for me. I... I don't deserve this."

Jax smiled, the expression widening into something that looked almost predatory in the low light, though Eva was too blinded by gratitude to see the teeth.

"No need to thank me, my dear," he purred, reaching out to tuck a strand of hair behind her ear. His voice was thick with possessiveness, a low rumble that vibrated against her skin. "I just want what's best for you. I want you to be happy. I want you to be... mine."

Eva nodded, her eyes misting over. She felt a pang of guilt for ever doubting him, for ever thinking he was just a selfish thug. He was rough, yes. He was a criminal. But he cared for her. This proved it.

Somewhere in the back of her mind, a tiny alarm bell rang. The Shadow's instinct, honed by years of hunting liars and manipulators, whispered that nothing comes for free. It whispered that Jax was hiding something, or that he would want something in return. A gift like this usually came with strings attached—strings that could turn into chains.

But she didn't care right now. She swatted the thought away.

She was tired of being suspicious. She was tired of analyzing every angle. She just wanted to surrender to the moment. She wanted to show her gratitude. She wanted to be the woman he saw.

She looked at the choker again. It sat in the velvet, waiting.

"How do you suggest I wear it?" she asked, her voice quivering slightly. "Does it... does it hurt? When it is turned on I mean?"

Jax stepped closer, closing the distance between them until his chest brushed against hers. His eyes were smoldering with desire, but it wasn't the frantic, animal lust she was used to. It was a cold, calculating hunger.

He didn't answer immediately. He simply reached out and took the choker out of the box, lifting it from the velvet. He held it up to the light, inspecting it.

"It doesn't hurt," he said softly. "It just... quiets things down."

He looked at the delicate locking mechanism intently, running his thumb over the biometric scanner hidden in the clasp. He knew exactly how it worked. He had spent hours programming it. But he let her believe it was a mystery to him too.

He lowered the choker, letting it dangle from his fingers like a pendulum.

"But we have a problem, Eva," he said, his tone shifting from romantic to practical.

Eva blinked, the spell breaking slightly. "What problem?"

Jax paused, weighing the choker in his hand. "You know you can't wear this all the time, right? Especially at the club."

Eva frowned. "Why not? It looks like a necklace. I could wear a scarf, or—"

"No," Jax cut her off gently but firmly. "If there is even a one percent chance Marco sees it on you... it's over. He knows his inventory, Eva. He counts every screw. If he sees this specific tech on your neck, he won't just know it's stolen. He'll know I stole it. And he'll know you are hiding something."

He let that sink in. The fear of discovery. The threat of Marco.

"He and the mafia will come for us," Jax added darkly. "And they won't be polite about it."

Eva felt a chill run down her spine that had nothing to do with the air conditioning. The joy of the gift was instantly tempered by the reality of their world. She had the key to her freedom in her hand, but she couldn't turn it.

"So..." she stammered, looking at the black band. "So I can only wear it here? At home?"

"Ideally," Jax said. "But even going out wearing it is pretty risky. What if Marco runs into you by chance? What if you run into him on the street by accident?"

He shook his head, looking troubled, as if he were trying to solve a puzzle for her sake.

"We need a cover," he said. "We need a reason for you to be wearing something that looks like high-end club tech. Or... we need a place where you can be hidden away enough that Marco won't look too closely."

Eva nodded slowly, agreeing with him. It made sense. But the idea that she would have to pick and choose her freedom—that she would have to toggle her powers on and off like a light switch based on who was in the room—was slightly disheartening. She wanted to put it on and never take it off. She wanted to forget she was The Shadow forever.

Jax looked down at her. A crooked smile slowly spread across his face—a smile Eva had come to recognize. It was the precursor to what surely was one of his sleazy ideas. It was the smile he wore when he was about to suggest anal, or a threesome, or something that pushed her boundaries.

But this time, the stakes felt higher.

"I have an idea," he said, his tone filled with poorly concealed joy. "A way to hide in plain sight."

Eva braced herself. "What?"

"You could always start working at the club," Jax said, dropping the bomb casually. "As more than a hostess."

Eva stared at him.

"I'm always looking for experienced women," he continued, his eyes raking over her body. "Women who can handle some of the more... loyal customers. If you were working in the back, in the private rooms... Marco doesn’t have access to go in there. Half the girls back there wear them as fashion statements anyway so it would be the perfect camouflage."

The air in the room seemed to suck out the window. The gratitude Eva had felt seconds ago began to curdle into something cold and hard in her stomach.

He wasn't just giving her a gift. He was offering her a trade.

—-----------------------------------------------------------------------

Eva felt the blood drain from her face. The warmth of the moment, the gratitude she had felt just seconds ago, evaporated like mist under a heat lamp.

"Working... as more than a hostess?" she repeated, her voice low and dangerous.

She looked at Jax, really looked at him. The romantic veneer was gone, replaced by the sleazy, opportunistic grin she knew too well. He wasn't looking at her like a savior anymore; he was looking at her like an investment manager calculating returns.

"Jax," she growled, her hands balling into fists at her sides, the fingernails biting into her palms. "I have told you countless times. I am not going to be a whore for hire in your club."

The anger flared hot and fast, a defensive reflex. She was a mother. She was a woman of principle, even if those principles had been eroded over the years. The idea of selling her body—actually selling it, not just displaying it in that humiliating hostess uniform—was a line she had sworn never to cross.

"I can barely manage to hide my ridiculously slutty hostess outfit from Erik as it is," she hissed, gesturing wildly towards the door, as if her son could see through the wood. "Do you have any idea the hoops I jump through? I change in the car. I have to hide the dress, never bringing it here in the apartment. If he found out I was..." She couldn't even say the word. "If he found out, it would destroy him."

Jax didn't flinch at her anger. He expected it. He countered it with the smooth, practiced ease of a man who spent his life manipulating desperate people.

"He won't find out," Jax said, shrugging his broad shoulders. "You don't have to tell him about it, Eva. I'm sure as hell not gonna tell that boy anything! I don't talk to him unless I have to."

He stepped closer, invading her personal space again, using his height to loom over her.

"Think about it," he reasoned, his voice dropping to a conspiratorial whisper. "How would he even find out? The VIP rooms are secure. No phones allowed. No cameras. It’s a vault, Eva. You’d be safer back there than you are on the floor."

He reached out, trailing a finger down her arm. "Besides... you aren't telling him about your powers, are you? You lie to him every single day about who you really are. You lie about “The Shadow”. You lie about the League. So how is this secret any different from that one?"

The question hit Eva like a physical blow. It was a cruel, twisted logic, but it found the crack in her armor: her guilt.

Jax was right. Her entire relationship with her son was built on a foundation of well-intentioned deceit. She was a masterpiece of lies. What was one more layer of paint on the canvas?

Eva closed her eyes, trying to center herself. She needed an anchor.

She focused her powers, pushing past the anger, past Jax’s voice, past the hum of the city. She tuned her super-hearing to the room next door.

Thump-thump... thump-thump... thump-thump.

The sound of Erik’s heartbeat filled her ears. It was slow, steady, rhythmic. He was calm. He was safe. He was probably reading, or maybe sleeping. That sound... it was the only thing that mattered. It was the reason she breathed. It was the reason she had endured the humiliation of the hostess job, the reason she tolerated Jax, the reason she was considering putting a leash on her own godhood.

Eva had always wondered when it would be the right time to tell Erik about her powers. When he was ten? When he was sixteen? She had promised herself that she would tell him if he showed signs of developing abilities of his own, so he wouldn't have to go through the terror of puberty-plus-superpowers alone like she had.

But now? He was past eighteen. He was a man, legally speaking. And he showed no signs. No super-strength, no flight, no sensory overload. He was delightfully, perfectly mundane.

Eva wondered about just sparing him the truth altogether. Why burden him? Why put a target on his back by telling him his mother used to break bones for a living?

The guilt of hiding such an important part of her life from her son, while she had told Jax—a criminal—everything, weighed on her chest like a stone. Jax knew her better than her own blood.

"I'm going to tell him..." she responded weakly, opening her eyes but unable to meet Jax’s gaze. "When... when the time is right."

It was a feeble defense, and she knew it. It hardly seemed to convince Jax.

Jax smirked, shaking his head with mock disappointment. "You have to lie better than that if you want to convince me, Eva. 'When the time is right'? Please. You're never going to tell him."

He walked around her, circling her like a shark. "He is a grown man now, Eva. Start treating him like one. Or he would never actually grow up and become responsible!"

He stopped behind her, his voice drifting over her shoulder. "In fact," he added softly, knowing exactly which button to push next, "it's high time you make him get a job and move out. He’s leeching off you. I know you won't like it, but if he can't get a job on his own..."

Jax paused for effect. "I don't mind giving him a cleaning job at the club. I promise I'll keep an eye on him. Keep him out of trouble. He can mop the floors. Clean the toilets. Learn the value of a dollar."

Eva spun around, her eyes flashing with a terrifying, protective fire.

"Not a chance!" she snapped, her voice trembling with a mixture of anger and horror. "You are not getting Erik involved in the club! I will not allow his innocence to be tainted by your corrupt influence. He is not setting foot in that place, Jax. Not as a cleaner, not as a customer, not as anything!"

The idea made her bile rise. Erik, her sweet, sensitive boy, mopping up vomit and spilled liquor in Jax’s club? Exposed to drugs, the violence, the exploitation? Over her dead body.

Jax didn't back down. He smirked, his eyes gleaming with amusement at her outburst. He had her exactly where he wanted her.

"Is that what you call it?" he taunted, his voice dripping with sarcasm. "Innocence? Or is it just ignorance?"

He stepped closer, his face inches from hers. "You're just afraid he'll learn the truth about us, aren't you? That you're not the innocent mommy that you pretend to be."

Eva winced, stepping back. Her heart ached at the memory of her former double life—the contrast between the blood on her knuckles and the cookies she baked on Sundays.

"Please, Jax," she pleaded, her voice cracking, the fight draining out of her. "Don't involve Erik in anything dangerous. He deserves a normal life. Far from you and me. Far from this."

She gestured to the choker in her hand. "This is for him. I'm doing this so he can be safe. Don't... don't drag him into the mud."

Jax shrugged nonchalantly, his eyes gleaming with malice. "Aww, poor baby! Afraid your precious boy will find out about our naughty little secret?" he sneered, his voice laced with mock sympathy.

Then, he delivered the killing blow.

"Or maybe," he whispered, his voice sharp and cutting, "you're just scared he'll realize he’s the son of a washed-up ex-heroine who works at a strip club and gets groped by strangers for money? Maybe you're scared he'll look at you and see exactly what you are: a woman who sold out."

Eva gasped, her eyes widening in shock.

The jab hit close to home, striking a nerve deeper than she anticipated. It wasn't just an insult; it was her deepest fear. Washed-up. Sold out. Was that what she was? A hero who gave up? A mother who failed?

Her face reddened, heat rushing to her cheeks. She struggled to compose herself. She nearly shouted at Jax, her eyes flaring up with a dangerous, incandescent anger. For a second, the air in the room vibrated with the sheer force of her emotion. She wanted to hit him. She wanted to throw him through the wall.

But she couldn't. Because he had brought the choker for her and knew how to make it work.

If she refused, what then? Jax could refuse to give her the choker? He could tell Erik everything. He could bring Erik into the club anyway. He held all the cards.

Eva swallowed hard, her throat clicking dryly. She forced her fists to unclench. Her head bobbed nervously as she gathered her strength, trying to find a compromise that let her keep her dignity while giving Jax what he wanted.

"Fine," she gritted out, the word tasting like ash in her mouth.

She looked up at him, her gaze fierce but defeated. "I'll take the job at the back of the club. But on my terms."

She took a breath, laying out the boundaries of her surrender. "Only stripping and lap dances. That's it. I'm not going to be a whore. No sex. No 'extras.' No out-calls like the other girls there. I keep my clothes on until I'm in the private room, and I put them back on before I leave."

It sounded pathetic even to her own ears—negotiating the terms of her own objectification—but it was the line in the sand she had to draw.

"And," she added, her voice gaining a little more steel, "I'll leave the decision up to Erik if he wants to work there or not. But you won't force him. You won't offer him a job. You won't recruit him. And that also means he definitely won't see me working in the back! You make sure our paths never cross inside that building. Promise me that, Jax!"

Jax stared at her, his expression unreadable for a long moment. He was weighing it. He had wanted full prostitution—it paid better, and it broke her faster—but stripping was a good start. It was a slippery slope. Once she was back there, wearing the collar, dancing for men... the rest would follow.

"Agreed," he finally spat, his voice cold and unforgiving. "I promise I'll keep an eye on him and not push him to do anything he doesn't wanna do. And I'll keep him out of the VIP section when you work there."

Eva nodded, her relief palpable. Her knees felt weak. She feared that Jax would reject her proposal outright, leading to another pointless argument where she would inevitably lose more ground. But he had accepted. She had bought Erik’s safety with her own shame.

She realized that it was crucial to maintain a semblance of control over Erik's life, despite her reluctance to involve him in the seedy underbelly of Darklight City.

"Jax, listen carefully," she began sternly, trying to reclaim some authority, her tone assertive. "I demand strict confidentiality regarding both Erik and myself. Any breach of this agreement—if he finds out, if anyone finds out who I really am—will result in dire consequences for you. Do you understand? I might be wearing a choker, but I will still find a way to make you regret it."

Jax stared at her, his eyes narrowing in suspicion. He saw the flicker of the old Shadow in her eyes, the dangerous woman who had broken bones in alleys. It was faint, but it was there.

"I've heard enough empty promises from you, Eva," he muttered, his voice icy. "You'd better mean every word you say or else—"

"Enough!" Eva cut him off, her voice strained but defiant. "Do you really think I'd risk putting Erik in danger? I just want to protect him from this twisted world we live in. I am giving you everything you want, Jax. Just... keep him safe."

Jax's eyes softened slightly, the tension breaking. He sighed heavily, running a hand through his hair. "Alright, fine," he conceded, his voice weary. "I'll respect your wishes concerning Erik."

He stepped closer, his voice dropping to a warning whisper, thick with sincerity. "But remember, Eva. Your secret isn't safe forever. The walls have ears, and people talk. You can hide him for now... but sooner or later, reality is going to come knocking."

Eva nodded, her heart hammering in her chest. She knew Jax was right. Their secret couldn't remain hidden indefinitely.

But she wasn't trying to hide it forever. She was just trying to buy time. Just a little more time for Erik to be happy.

She looked down at the choker in her hand. The metal felt heavy now. Heavier than lead.

Jax, sensing the deal was closed and wanting to move to the prize, nudged the still-open velvet box toward Eva, his mood brightening instantly.

"Now," he said, a greedy glint in his eye. "Enough of that. Try this on and let's see how it goes."

Eva took a deep breath. She looked at the wall in the direction where Erik’s room was one last time. She focused her hearing.

Thump-thump... thump-thump.

"I love you," she whispered silently to the heartbeat.

Then, she raised the black band to her throat.

—---------------------------------------------------------------

The room seemed to hold its breath. The argument about the club, the negotiation about Erik’s future, the threats and the promises—all of it hung suspended in the air like dust motes in a sunbeam.

Eva stood in the center of the bedroom, the black velvet box discarded on the duvet, the choker heavy in her hand. It felt cold to the touch, a synthetic, alien coldness that didn't warm up even as her fingers tightened around it.

Jax watched her, his expression unreadable, though his eyes gleamed with a hunger that had nothing to do with sex and everything to do with control. He nudged the empty box further away on the bed, clearing the space between them.

Eva took a deep breath, the air whistling slightly in her nose—a sound she usually heard with crystal clarity, analyzing the airflow, the dust content, the humidity. She tried to memorize the sensation of her senses: the way she could feel the weave of the carpet through her socks, the way she could hear the electrical hum of the lamp filament, the way she could smell the lingering scent of Jax’s cologne mixed with the ozone of the coming storm.

She was about to turn the volume down on the world.

With a tentative smile that didn't quite reach her eyes, Eva lifted the choker. She swept her hair up with one hand, exposing the long, elegant curve of her neck—a neck that had withstood punches from super-villains, a neck that held her head high through years of double-lives.

She slipped the band around her throat.

It fit perfectly, as if it had been molded for her. The metal settled against her skin, cool and smooth. She felt for the clasp at the back, her fingers fumbling for a second before finding the groove.

Click.

The sound was soft, precise, and final.

Eva lowered her hands, letting her hair fall back over her shoulders. She stood there, waiting. She braced herself for a shock, a wave of dizziness, a sudden blackout. She expected... something.

She waited five seconds. Ten.

She blinked. She looked at her hands. She flexed her fingers.

Nothing happened.

The refrigerator in the kitchen was still humming. The car outside was still thumping its bass. The world was still loud, sharp, and overwhelming.

Slightly confused and feeling a wave of anticlimactic disappointment wash over her, Eva frowned. She looked at Jax.

"Is that it?" she asked.

Jax looked just as confused for a moment. He stepped closer, peering at the choker as if looking for an "on" switch he might have missed. He reached out, his rough fingers brushing her neck as he fiddled with the lock mechanism.

"Well," he muttered, rubbing his chin with his free hand. "It's a nano-tech thing, so I guess... maybe give it a minute? It has to sync up."

Nano-tech.

The word hung in the air. Eva had heard of it, of course. The League had files on experimental microscopic robotics. But hearing Jax say it, realizing that this wasn't just a piece of jewelry but a delivery system, sent a sudden spike of apprehension through her.

She was about to ask if he was sure it was working when she felt it.

It started at the base of her neck, right where the blue pulse of the choker sat against her jugular.

It wasn't pain. It was... cold.

A faint, creeping frost spread outward from the metal band. It felt like someone had injected ice water directly into her veins. Eva gasped, her hand flying to her throat, but the sensation was already moving. It traveled down her spine, branching out into her shoulders, her arms, her chest.

It was the nano-tech Jax mentioned. Millions of microscopic machines, dormant in the band, now flooding into her system, seeking out the unique genetic markers that made her her.

"Jax..." she whispered, her voice trembling.

The coldness intensified, racing through her blood. It felt invasive. It felt like thousands of tiny, cold spiders crawling beneath her skin, mapping her nervous system, finding the nodes of power and wrapping them in lead.

She didn't understand the tech, and looking at Jax’s fascinated but slightly blank expression, she doubted he truly did either. He was just the user; she was the hardware being reformatted.

Then, the sensation crested. It washed over her brain like a wave of static.

And then it passed.

The coldness evaporated, leaving behind a strange, hollow numbness. It felt as if someone had taken a giant eraser to her mind and scrubbed away a layer of her consciousness.

Eva blinked, swaying slightly on her feet. She reached out to steady herself against the dresser.

She tried to summon her familiar power surges—the comforting warmth in her solar plexus that signaled she could lift a truck, the tingle behind her eyes that meant she could see through walls.

She pushed. She grasped for it.

But there was nothing there.

It was gone. Vanished. Like water evaporating into thin air. The connection to the well of energy she had drawn from for twenty years had been severed.

Eva's heart pounded in her chest—a frantic, purely human rhythm. She took a shaky breath, the air feeling thin, insufficient.

"Jax," she murmured, her voice sounding foreign to her own ears. It sounded small. Fragile. "I feel... really weird."

Jax chuckled softly, stepping closer to her. He seemed to sense the shift in her energy, the collapse of her bio-electric field. His warm breath brushed against her neck, sending a chill down her spine that had nothing to do with super-senses and everything to do with raw vulnerability.

He simply asked, "Weird how? Can you still use your abilities? Try using your hearing one maybe?"

Eva nodded slowly. That was the litmus test.

She closed her eyes. She did what she had done a thousand times a day. She focused her mind, trying to expand her auditory range. She tried to push her hearing past the walls of the bedroom, past the hallway, into the room next door.

She reached for the sound of Erik’s heartbeat.

Thump-thump.

She waited.

Silence.

She strained harder, furrowing her brow, pushing her mind against the barrier. Come on. Just the heartbeat. I just need to hear him.

Nothing.

She couldn't hear the refrigerator. She couldn't hear the car down the street. She couldn't hear the electricity in the walls.

All she could hear was the rustle of Jax’s clothes as he shifted his weight, and the sound of her own breathing.

The world had shrunk. The vast, noisy, overwhelming tapestry of the city had been cut away, leaving her trapped in a small, quiet box called a bedroom.

She couldn't hear her son.

For a second, panic flared—a sharp, white-hot terror. Is he okay? Did his heart stop?

But then logic kicked in. No. He was fine. She just... couldn't hear him. She was deaf to the world beyond these four walls.

It definitely had worked!

The realization hit her with a dizzying mix of emotions.

A faint smile touched Eva's lips, born of relief. The noise was gone. The constant, grinding pressure of the world was gone. She was just Eva. Just a woman in a room with a man.

But beneath the relief, anxiety began to coil in her gut. She felt naked. She felt blind. For the first time in her adult life, she was vulnerable. If someone kicked down the door right now, she couldn't stop them. If Erik called out for help in a whisper, she wouldn't hear him.

She looked at Jax, her eyes wide and glassy.

"It's gone," she whispered. "It's all gone."

Jax’s smile widened into a grin of triumph. He reached out, running his hands down her arms, savoring the feel of her ordinary, powerless flesh.

"Good," he purred. "That means we can have some real fun."

He stepped back slightly, looking at her like a kid with a new toy he hadn't quite figured out how to break yet.

"As far as I know and understand the tech," Jax explained, his voice taking on a lecture-like quality, "Leonard helped me figure some of it out. It's not just a dampener. It's an interface."

He paused, gauging her reaction to the name. Eva had met Leonard. He was the one who had helped her fix her costume. If Leonard had worked on this, then Eva had some faith in its safety.

"You can pretty much think about it," Jax continued, "and it can do clothing changes for you. Nano-fabrication. It pulls matter from the air or... something. I don't know the science behind it."

He shrugged, brushing past the details. "Leonard helped me figure out the command codes. And I do have some control over it till you figure out how to use it right. I hope that's okay?"

He asked the question casually, but his eyes were sharp. He brushed past the details about how much control he had over it, framing it as a temporary training wheels situation.

Eva caught the implication. He has control. But she chose to ignore it for now. She was too intoxicated by the silence, too overwhelmed by the sudden quiet of her own mind.

Jax nudged her arm excitedly, eager to see the magic trick.

"Why don't you give it a go, babe?" he urged. "How about trying out the outfit feature first? Just imagine some clothes in your mind. The nano-tech particles should create them over your body. Leonard said it responds to alpha-wave visualization."

Eva felt a slight disbelief at the existence of such tech. Clothing that appeared out of thin air? It sounded like magic, or comic book science. But then again, she had just felt millions of robots swim through her blood, so anything was possible.

She took a breath. She closed her eyes.

She didn't know how to thank him. The idea of getting her powers suppressed so she could lead a normal life was more than enough for her. But this? The nano-tech that came with the choker seemed like endless possibilities. A new wardrobe? A disguise? It was a gift on top of a gift.

Eva's heart raced as she imagined all the ways she could use it to change her life. She could be anyone. She could hide anywhere.

She focused. She tried to clear her mind of the lingering anxiety about Erik and the argument about the club.

She pictured a dress. Something elegant. Something she had seen in a magazine once but never bought because it wasn't practical for fighting. A sleek, form-fitting evening gown, maybe in a deep emerald green.

She held the image in her mind.

Slowly, she felt a sensation ripple across her skin. It wasn't cold this time; it was tingly, like static electricity. She felt material weaving itself together out of nothing, enveloping her body. It felt heavy, liquid, fitting snugly against her curves.

She gasped, her eyes flying open. Her fingers flew to touch her waist. It felt silky, smooth, expensive.

"It works," she breathed, looking down, expecting to see green silk.

But as she looked, her mind betrayed her.

In the fraction of a second between visualizing the dress and opening her eyes, her thoughts had shifted. The subconscious, that dark and treacherous ocean, had thrown up a wave.

She had thought of Lana.

She had thought of the warehouse. She had thought of the girl broken and bleeding in the dark. And specifically, she had thought of the horrific, dehumanizing outfit the kidnappers had forced Lana to wear.

The gimp suit.

The thought flashed through her mind—a microsecond of horror—but the nano-tech was faster than her conscious control. It latched onto the strongest, most visceral image in her head.

The silky sensation on her waist suddenly tightened. It was constricting. The texture shifted instantly from smooth silk to something rubbery, thick, and aggressively synthetic.

The emerald green vanished, replaced by a glossy, void-like black.

Eva froze, looking down in horror. She wasn't wearing an evening gown.

She was wearing black latex.

It encased her legs, her torso, her arms. It squeezed her flesh with a cruel, unrelenting pressure. It was the exact suit Lana had forced to wear—the suit of a victim, that of a slave.

Then, she heard Jax’s exclamation of surprise, laced with a hint of shocked laughter.

"My my, Eva! I didn't think you, of all people would be into this sort of thing!"

Eva’s heart hammered against her ribs. No. No, no, no.

Just when she was feeling a flash of relief that at least her face was uncovered, that at least she wasn't fully erased, she felt the nano-particles act up again. The tech was finishing the pattern.

It swarmed up her neck. It crawled over her chin, her mouth, her nose.

Eva tried to scream, but the sound was swallowed.

The mask appeared over her face, sealing her in darkness.

She had seen Lana wearing it, and her thoughts on the gimp suit hadn't been positive in the least; they had been thoughts of revulsion and pity. She dreaded what Jax must be thinking seeing her in it now.

She must look like a proper fuck doll to him in this ridiculous outfit.

"Damn it!" Eva exclaimed in frustration, though her voice came out somewhat muffled, distorted by the heavy rubber now covering her mouth. She clawed at her face, but there were no seams, no zippers. It was a second skin.

She could hear Jax chuckling. It wasn't a kind laugh. It was the laugh of a teenage boy discovering a dirty magazine.

"Oh god!" Jax wheezed, clearly enjoying the spectacle. "What kinda freak are you, Eva?"

Eva felt herself blush, her face probably going crimson red with embarrassment under that mask. She felt humiliated, trapped in her own nightmare.

"I don't know what happened..." she tried to defend herself, her voice thick and panicky. "I guess I got distracted and the stupid tech thought this was what I wanted. It's not! Stop laughing at me, Jax!"

Eva protested, her voice muffled by the mask, sounding like she was speaking from underwater. Her cheeks burned with shame, and she desperately wished that she could disappear, or that she had her super-strength to rip this thing off her body.

But she didn't. She was just a woman in a rubber suit, standing in front of a laughing man, waiting for him to save her from herself.

—---------------------------------------------------------------------

Jax’s laughter boomed through the small bedroom, bouncing off the walls and vibrating against the rubber that encased Eva’s ears. To her heightened—or formerly heightened—senses, it would have been annoying. Now, filtered through the thick latex of the gimp mask, it sounded like the judgment of God.

"Wow, Eva!" Jax wheezed, wiping a tear of mirth from his eye. He walked around her, inspecting the disastrous result of her subconscious visualization. "I never knew you had such... kinky preferences! Is this what you wear when you’re thinking about saving the city? Or just when you’re thinking about me?"

Eva let out a frustrated, guttural groan. She squeezed her eyes shut behind the mask, her fists balling at her sides. The latex squeaked—a sharp, pathetic sound—as she clenched her hands.

She wanted to rip the damn mask off her face. She wanted to strangle Jax with it. She wanted to sink through the floorboards and vanish into the earth.

But she couldn't. The suit was seamless. It was a prison of her own making, constructed by the rogue technology she didn't understand. The air inside the mask was already getting hot, stale with her own recycled panic.

"It's not... funny!" she shouted, but the words were garbled, reduced to muffled, desperate noises.

She clawed at her neck, trying to find a seam, a zipper, anything. But the nano-tech was perfect. It was a second skin.

Jax finally stopped laughing, though the smirk remained plastered on his face. He stepped in front of her, looking down at the black, featureless visage of the woman who used to be The Shadow.

"This technology is incredible," Eva managed to say, forcing the words out through clenched teeth, trying to salvage a shred of dignity. "But... I think I need a little help controlling it."

Jax nodded eagerly, his eyes gleaming with anticipation. He looked like a kid who had just realized his remote control car could also fly.

"Of course, sweetheart," he said, his voice dripping with false sympathy. "Let's just remove that mask and adjust the settings. We can't have you suffocating before the fun starts."

Eva hesitated. Her heart pounded in her chest, a frantic bird trapped in a rubber cage.

"Are you sure you can do that?" she asked warily, her muffled voice thick with suspicion. She had to trust Jax—he was the only one who knew the codes—but she couldn't shake the feeling that he was enjoying this too much. It was never simple with Jax.

Jax chuckled wickedly, his eyes sparkling with mischief. "Don't worry, gorgeous! I've got you covered."

He reached out his hand, his grip firm and confident.

"Give me your hand," he commanded.

Eva hesitated for a moment, her breath hitching in the hot mask. Then, surrendering to the necessity, she placed her gloved hand in Jax's grasp.

"Alright," she whispered. "Let's do this."

Her pulse quickened as she felt his warmth through the latex. The choker around her neck seemed to hum with a renewed energy, a higher pitch than before. She sensed the tiny nanobots swarming beneath the synthetic skin of the suit, awaiting orders.

Jax guided her towards the bed, his eyes locked onto where her eyes would be behind the mask.

"Close your eyes, babe," he murmured, his voice hushed and soothing, like a hypnotist. "Focus on the dark. Let me do the driving."

Eva obeyed. She closed her eyes in the darkness of the mask. She sensed Jax's warmth moving closer, his free hand coming up to caress her rubber-clad shoulders gently. She could practically feel the electricity between them, buzzing like static in the air.

"Relax, love," Jax cooed, his voice a whisper against the rubber ear-hole. "Let the nanobots do their work. Trust me."

Trust me. The theme of the night.

Eva tried to relax. She forced her muscles to uncoil. She focused on the subtle hum of the choker.

She felt a shift.

A surge of electricity coursed through her veins—not painful, but startling. And then, the pressure on her face vanished.

The heavy, stifling mask dissolved. It didn't fall off; it simply disintegrated into mist, the particles flowing down her neck to rejoin the rest of the suit.

Eva gasped, breathing in a deep lungful of cool, conditioned air. It tasted sweet. She blinked her eyes open, feeling the sweat on her forehead cooling instantly.

She looked at Jax. He was watching her attentively, his gaze penetrating. He looked satisfied, powerful.

"That's it, Eva," he murmured, his voice a gentle caress, stroking her cheek with his thumb. "Let yourself go. Stop fighting it."

Eva nodded, her breathing deepening as she allowed herself to fall into the sensations swirling around her. The humming of the choker seemed to merge with the rhythmic beating of her heart.

Jax's hands moved across her body, tracing paths over the latex that still covered her from the neck down. He squeezed her hand gently, his brow furrowed in concentration.

"Now," he said softly. "Let's get you out of this... dungeon gear. Unless you want to keep it?"

"No!" Eva said quickly. "Get it off."

Jax smiled. "Focus on something... lighter. Something easy. Like a sundress."

Eva closed her eyes again. She pushed away the image of the warehouse. She thought of a summer day. A picnic. Innocence.

She felt the choker hum again.

The sensation was bizarre—like water running down her body in reverse. The thick, constricting rubber thinned out. The texture changed from slick to soft. The tightness around her legs loosened into a flowing breeze.

She opened her eyes and looked down.

The black horror was gone. In its place, she was wearing a beautiful, strappy yellow sundress that flowed just past her thighs. It was light, airy, and completely innocent. It was the kind of dress a college girl would wear on a first date.

Jax looked at her and smiled, stepping back to admire his work.

"There!" he said, clapping his hands together softly. "You just have to be very focused and deliberate in your thoughts when you do it. The tech reads your subconscious, Eva. It knows what you're afraid of. You have to be stronger than your fear."

It was a good speech. It sounded supportive. But Eva noticed he didn't let go of her hand.

"How about we give some other features a try?" Jax asked.

His expression shifted. The gentle, supportive smile evaporated, replaced by his usual lecherous, predatory grin. The look that said he was done playing tech support and was ready to play with his toy.

Before she could object, before she could ask what "other features" meant, Jax moved.

He didn't ask. He didn't guide her.

He simply grabbed her by the waist, his fingers digging into the soft fabric of the sundress, and threw her.

He tossed her onto the mattress like a ragdoll.

"Ah!"

An uncharacteristic squeal escaped from Eva's mouth as she flew backward, landing heavily on the bed. The springs of the mattress groaned squeakily under her body's weight.

She lay there for a split second, stunned.

Usually, when she had full control over her powers, she would have grounded herself instantly. She would have been an immovable object. He wouldn't have been able to budge her, let alone throw her around like a sack of laundry.

But now? She was just 140 pounds of a human woman.

The vulnerability hit her harder than the mattress. Jax’s dominant behavior wasn't new to her—he always tried to be the alpha—but with her abilities gone, the dynamic had shifted fundamentally. She wasn't playing along anymore. She was actually at his mercy.

Jax stood at the foot of the bed, unbuckling his belt. His eyes raked over her—the yellow sundress hiked up her thighs, her hair messy, her eyes wide with shock.

"You look good in yellow," he muttered, kicking his pants off. "But you'll look better in nothing."

Eva swallowed hard. Her submissive tendencies, usually kept in check by her immense power and responsibility, felt amplified in the vacuum of her strength. She watched him, feeling a flutter of fear mixed with a dark, undeniable arousal.

The glitch was fixed. The dress was perfect. But the man with the controller to her choker was just getting started.

—----------------------------------------------------------------------------

Jax stood at the edge of the bed, the condom wrapper tearing with a sharp zip that sounded deafening in the quiet room. He rolled the latex down his length, his movements practiced and efficient.

Eva lay back on the pillows, her yellow sundress bunched around her waist, her chest heaving. She felt... small. That was the only word for it. Without the hum of her bio-electric field, without the dense, unbreakable weave of her super-musculature, she felt incredibly fragile. The mattress springs dug into her back. The air from the vent felt cold on her exposed thighs.

Jax climbed over her, his knees sinking into the mattress on either side of her hips. He loomed, blocking out the light, a silhouette of pure, unchecked masculinity.

"You look different," he murmured, reaching down to brush a stray lock of hair from her forehead. "Softer. More... breakable."

He didn't wait for a response. He positioned himself between her legs, guiding the head of his cock to her entrance.

Eva held her breath. She was used to this—used to his size, used to the intensity. In the past, her body could take anything. She could accommodate him easily because her tissues were resilient, capable of stretching and recovering instantly.

But as the tip of his cock pressed against her, she felt a sharp, stinging pinch.

Push.

He broke through the barrier—her hymen, which regenerated constantly due to her healing factor—with a single, decisive motion. Eva gasped, a reflex of pain she hadn't felt in years. Usually, it was a dull pressure. Tonight, it was a tear.

"Relax," Jax grunted, gripping her hips to anchor her.

He tried to push forward. He tried to sink the rest of his length inside her.

He stopped.

He couldn't.

It was like hitting a wall. Not a bone, but a wall of seized, panicked muscle.

"Ah! Jax, stop!" Eva cried out, her hands flying to his shoulders, pushing him back. "It hurts! It won't... I can't!"

Jax frowned, holding his position, barely an inch inside her. He tried to gently push again, but Eva’s body rejected him. Her hips bucked involuntarily, her legs clamping shut.

It wasn't that she didn't want him. Her mind was hazy with arousal and submission. But her body was in a state of catastrophic shock. For twenty years, her muscles had operated with the density of steel. Now, stripped of that power, her autonomic nervous system was misfiring. Her pelvic floor, terrified of the intrusion without its usual "shield," had locked down tight. It was a violent, spasmodic reaction—a physiological panic attack.

"Fuck," Jax muttered, withdrawing slightly. He looked down at where they were joined. "You're clamped shut. It's like a vice down there."

"I don't know what's wrong," Eva whimpered, tears of frustration and pain pricking her eyes. She felt defective. "My body... it’s not listening to me. It feels like it’s frozen."

She tried to will herself to relax, to open up for him, but the muscles were spasming, trembling with a weakness she had never known. The friction was agonizing. Without her super-durability, his girth felt like a weapon, tearing her apart.

"I can't do it, Jax," she whispered, shame coloring her cheeks. "I'm too tight. It’s impossible."

Jax looked at her, seeing the genuine distress. He pulled back, hovering over her, his expression shifting from frustration to calculation.

"Your body is in shock," he diagnosed, his voice clinical. "It's trying to protect itself because the super-strength is gone. You're experiencing... a withdrawal symptom. Your muscles are seizing up."

He paused, a slow, wicked smile spreading across his face.

"Lucky for you," he purred, "I have the controls for it."

He shifted his weight, freeing one hand to reach up and touch the choker at her throat. His fingers brushed the metal, and he closed his eyes, focusing.

"Just breathe, Eva," he commanded. "Let me fix you."

Eva watched him, confused. "Fix me?"

"The nano-tech doesn't just change your clothes," Jax murmured, his eyes still closed, his brow furrowed in concentration. "It interfaces with your nervous system. It controls the signals to your muscles."

Suddenly, Eva felt a strange sensation wash over her pelvis. It wasn't sexual. It was medicinal. A wave of warm, liquid relaxation flooded her lower body.

The pain vanished instantly.

The spasms stopped. The tightness that had been blocking him melted away like ice in hot water. Her muscles, which had been screaming in protest, turned to silk. It was an unnerving feeling—loss of control on a cellular level. She hadn't relaxed them; he had.

"Oh," Eva breathed, her head falling back against the pillow. "That feels... strange."

"Better?" Jax asked, opening his eyes.

"Yes."

"Good."

He didn't waste another second. He grabbed her hips, pulling her flush against him, and drove forward.

This time, there was no resistance.

He slid inside her completely, hilt-deep, in one long, smooth stroke.

Eva gasped, her eyes going wide. The sensation was overwhelming. Without the resistance, without the durability, she felt every single vein, every ridge of him filling her. It was incredibly intimate, bordering on invasive. She was completely open to him, artificially dilated to accommodate his size.

"Ja- aaax! You are waaaaay too deep!" she moaned, clutching the sheets.

Jax groaned, resting his forehead against hers for a second, savoring the warmth. "Now that," he whispered, "is much better."

He began to move. Slow, deliberate thrusts. He was testing the new waters. Eva moaned with every stroke, the pleasure sharp and immediate. She felt fragile, yes, but the tech was compensating, keeping her pain at bay while allowing the sensation to flood in.

But Jax wasn't satisfied with just "access." He wanted ownership.

He pulled out almost all the way, then slammed back in. He looked down at her, his eyes dark.

"But you know," he mused, his rhythm steady. "Now you're a little too loose. I like it snug."

Eva blinked, hazy with pleasure. "What?"

"Hold on tight," Jax whispered.

He closed his eyes again.

The hum of the choker changed pitch—a sound only she could feel in her bones.

Inside her body, the nano-tech reversed the polarity. The artificial relaxation vanished, replaced by a controlled, calculated constriction.

Eva cried out as her vaginal walls suddenly contracted. But it wasn't the painful spasm from before. It was a uniform, rhythmic tightening. Her body clamped down on his cock, molding to him like a wet glove.

It trapped him inside her.

Jax grunted, his head snapping back as the pressure increased. "Fuck... yes."

"Jax!" Eva gasped, squirming. "It's... I can't let go!"

"I know," he growled, grabbing her waist harder. "I've got you locked on."

He began to thrust again, but now the friction was intense. He had to force his way in and out, the resistance perfectly calibrated to maximize his pleasure. For Eva, it was maddening. She felt full to the bursting point, her body gripping him relentlessly against her will. Every thrust dragged against her sensitive walls, stimulating nerves she didn't know she had.

"Do you feel that?" Jax demanded, his breath coming in ragged pants. "Do you realize you aren't feeling any pain? I broke your hymen, I'm stretching you to the limit... and you're just taking it."

Eva’s eyes widened as she grasped the implication. She stuttered, "You mean... wait! Does that mean the choker is..."

"Blocking the pain receptors? Yeah," Jax finished her thought, grinning through the sweat dripping down his face. "And controlling the muscle density. You're a custom fit, baby."

He picked up the pace, slamming into her with renewed vigor. The feeling of being physically hacked—of having her body adjusted like a machine to suit his cock—was humiliating, terrifying, and undeniably arousing.

"But I haven't even shown you the best part yet," Jax said, his voice straining with effort.

He looked right into her eyes. He stopped thrusting for a split second, holding himself deep inside her, the nano-tech grip unyielding.

His gaze bore into hers. His voice dropped to a command.

"Cum!"

That was it. Just one word.

Eva didn't realize what was happening. Her brain didn't process the command as a request. The choker received the audio signal from the authorized user, translated it into a neural impulse, and fired it directly into the pleasure centers of her brain and the nerve endings of her clitoris.

It was like a sledgehammer hitting a pane of glass.

The dam broke. A massive, synthetic, overwhelming orgasm crashed into Eva’s mind with zero warning. There was no build-up, no plateau. Just the peak.

"AHHHHH!"

Eva forgot she was in her bedroom. She forgot Erik was next door. The orgasm shattered her.

Her eyes rolled back into her skull until only the whites showed. Her fingernails dug deep into the mattress, tearing the fabric. Her legs flailed in the air, her toes curling so hard they cramped. She howled like a she-wolf, a raw, primal scream of absolute overload.

The choker forced her body to sustain the peak. Her pussy pulsated around Jax’s cock, milking him dry with a mechanical ferocity that no human woman could replicate.

For a second, even Jax stopped moving, shocked by the sheer volume of her scream and the intensity of the contractions.

"Jesus," he breathed, watching her writhe.

He waited for the tremors to subside, but he didn't pull out. He just watched her come down, her chest heaving, her eyes unfocused, drool escaping the corner of her mouth.

She was completely, utterly at his mercy. And she had never felt anything like it.

—--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

The echoes of Eva’s scream seemed to hang in the damp air of the bedroom long after her throat had gone silent. Her body was still twitching, small aftershocks of the synthetic neural overload firing through her limbs. She lay sprawled on the mattress, her chest heaving, sweat glistening on her skin like a sheen of oil.

Jax stopped moving. He held himself over her, his weight supported on his forearms, watching the dilation of her pupils as they slowly returned to normal size. He could feel the tremors in her vaginal walls—not the tight, controlled squeezing of the nano-tech this time, but the natural, chaotic spasms of a woman who had been pushed past her limit.

He smirked, a look of satisfied ownership, before slowly withdrawing.

He pulled out with a wet, heavy slide. The sudden absence of him left Eva feeling hollow, a cold draft hitting the sensitive, over-stimulated flesh between her legs.

Jax rolled off her, sitting on the edge of the bed. He reached for the discarded sheet, wiping himself down with a casual nonchalance that stood in stark contrast to the violence of the pleasure he had just inflicted.

Eva blinked, staring at the ceiling. Her mind was slowly rebooting. The haze of the orgasm was lifting, replaced by a creeping sense of alarm.

He made me do that, she thought, the realization hitting her with a delayed thud. He didn't touch me. He just... spoke.

She turned her head on the pillow, looking at him. He looked sheepish, almost innocent, sitting there naked with his shoulders hunched slightly. It was a pose designed to disarm.

"Jax," she croaked, her voice raspy. "You... you forced it."

Jax looked back over his shoulder, widening his eyes in mock surprise. "I was just playing, Eva. I thought you knew that."

He reached out, his hand resting on her shin, rubbing the muscle gently. "I would never do anything that you don't want to do... with or without your powers dampened with that thing. You were tight. You were stressed. I just... helped you get over the edge. It was a gift."

Eva frowned, confusion warring with the lingering endorphins. A gift? It felt like a hijacking. But his touch was warm, and his voice was soothing. He sounded sincere. And hadn't she enjoyed it? Hadn't she screamed louder than she ever had in her life?

"But the command..." she murmured, sitting up slowly, pulling the sheet up to cover her breasts. "How did it work? I didn't agree to it."

Jax shifted, turning his body fully toward her. He adopted the tone of a patient teacher explaining a complex problem to a slow student.

"Look, the choker needs a backup user," he explained, his face open and earnest. "It’s a safety feature. In case you pass out, or the tech glitches, or you get into a situation where you can't mentally control it. Someone needs to be able to take it off or adjust the settings from the outside."

He tapped his own chest. "I figured I could do that for you. Leonard set the protocols. And yeah, I figured I could have some fun while I was at it... testing the limits, you know?"

He chuckled softly, trying to lighten the mood. "But here’s the thing, Eva. You can change that. The way the interface works is intuitive. It reads your subconscious state."

He leaned in closer, his voice dropping to a whisper. "No matter who the backup user is... if you don't really trust the person, then the commands don't work. The nano-tech reads your cortisol levels, your heart rate variability. If you were afraid of me, if you truly didn't trust me... that command would have fizzled out. It would have registered as a threat and locked down."

Jax paused, letting the lie sink in.

"So," he concluded, smiling warmly. "The fact that it worked? That means you trust me, Eva. Deep down. Even if you're scared to admit it. As long as you trust me, the commands I give to the choker will work. You aren't in any danger from me misusing it, because you hold the ultimate key in your subconscious."

It was a brilliant fabrication. Leonard had double-checked the user safety features, and while there were safeguards, the "trust" mechanic was pure fiction. The choker obeyed the registered admin codes regardless of the wearer's feelings. It was a slave collar, plain and simple.

But Eva didn't know that.

She thought about his words, processing the logic. It appealed to her vanity—the idea that she was still in control deep down. It appealed to her desire for safety—the idea that the device was smart enough to protect her. She heard what she wanted to hear. What she didn’t hear now without her abilities was the irregularities in Jax’s heartbeats like when he lied to her before this.

She massaged her sore inner thighs, feeling the slick wetness there. I trust him, she told herself. I must. That's why it felt so good.

"So..." she asked slowly, testing the theory. "I can control who else can control the choker besides me? How does it work anyway? Just by touch, or do you have nano-tech in you already?"

She felt slightly nervous asking these technical questions, not wanting to sound dumb in the face of this advanced sci-fi machinery.

Jax thought for a moment, pretending to recall the manual. "Well, like I said... I'm not a master at tech things. I don't know much more than what I told you already. Though I think it works with touch and voice recognition. Because I definitely don't have nano-tech in me."

He grinned, gesturing to his naked torso. "There is nothing 'nano' about me, babe. Everything I got is macro."

He chuckled at his own crude joke, the vibration rumbling in his chest.

It worked. The tension broke. Eva’s lips twitched at the corners, a small, reluctant smile appearing.

"I suppose I should be grateful for that," she mused, shaking her head. She ran her fingers along the smooth black metal of the choker around her neck. It felt inert now, just a piece of jewelry.

She toyed with the thought of trusting Jax fully. It was a terrifying leap of faith, but she had already jumped. She was wearing the collar.

"What happens if I decide to remove the choker?" she asked cautiously, her fingers tracing the lack of a visible latch. "It doesn't seem like I can just pull it off... to my touch, it seems pretty much seamless, like a rubber band fused to my neck."

Jax shrugged nonchalantly. "It will come off for you without any issue. Same goes for the other trusted user... that's me... as long as you still trust that person."

He paused, a mischievous glint in his eye. "You can add multiple people to the admin list if you don't trust me completely... Maybe Erik? He's good with computers, right? But that would be a very weird conversation for you. 'Hey son, help mom take off her power-dampening BDSM collar and also by the way I'm a superhero.'"

Eva stiffened. The mere mention of Erik in this context made her skin crawl.

"No," she said firmly. "That's not going to happen. Erik comes nowhere near this thing."

"Fair enough," Jax said, raising his hands in surrender. "But it's an option if you decide I'm 'untrustworthy' later on."

He leaned back on his hands, looking relaxed. "As for removal... It's a simple mental interface. Just think hard about it being off. Visualize it opening. And it will just slip off on its own."

Eva nodded, filing that information away. Think it off. That was her escape hatch.

"But," Jax added, his tone darkening slightly, a warning note creeping in. "As for someone else trying to remove it forcefully? Or if someone tries to hack it? Or even if you try to pry it off with a tool instead of using the command?"

He tapped the metal band. "It gives a mild shock. Kind of like a shock collar for a dog, but... stronger. It protects itself. It stings for you, but it’ll knock the guy trying to take it off across the room. It won't come off anyway. The molecular bond is stronger than steel."

Jax grinned mischievously. "So don't try to remove it without me around just to be safe."

Eva laughed, a short, dry sound. The idea of being electrocuted wasn't exactly funny, but the absurdity of the situation—naked in bed, discussing high-tech defense mechanisms—was overwhelming.

She touched the choker again. It was a weapon. A shield. A cage.

A darker thought crossed her mind. She remembered the feeling of the nano-tech invading her muscles, controlling her body. If it could tighten a muscle... if it could stop a heart...

She looked at Jax, her expression turning serious.

"Jax," she asked quietly. "What happens if I tell the choker to kill whoever is touching it? Will it work?"

Jax visibly paled. For a split second, the arrogant facade slipped. His eyes widened, darting to the black band on her neck as if it were a coiled snake. He knew what Marco had built. He knew the tech could interface with any nervous system it touched.

He shrugged it off quickly, forcing a laugh that sounded a little too brittle.

"I... I suppose it might," he answered, his voice tight. "But why would you want to do that, Eva? You aren't a killer."

He reached out, his hand hovering near her shoulder but not touching her, as if testing the air for danger.

"You're stronger than most men you'd encounter in your day-to-day life, even without powers," he reasoned quickly. "This is for protection only. Defense, not offense. You don't need to resort to killing. That's... that's messy. That brings the cops. That makes the mafia sniff around things you don’t want."

He didn't elaborate on the possibility that the choker might actually possess the potential to stop a human heart instantly. He didn't want her thinking about the weapon she was wearing. He wanted her to think about the leash.

He opted to change the topic entirely, and fast.

"Eva," he said, his voice dropping back into that seductive, hypnotic register. "Let's not talk about killing. Let's talk about living."

He moved closer, his confidence returning as she didn't strike him down. He placed a hand on her thigh, squeezing gently.

"I know you're hesitant about this," he murmured. "But consider letting me show you some truly magical experiences with this device. We’ve barely scratched the surface. The dress? The orgasm? That was level one."

He looked into her eyes, promising her a world where she didn't have to think, didn't have to lead, didn't have to be the hero.

"I promise," he whispered. "They'll be worth remembering."

Eva hesitated. The fear of the "kill command" faded, replaced by the lingering buzz of arousal. The darkness in her—the part that was tired of holding up the sky—whispered that maybe, just maybe, letting go was worth the risk.

She looked at the man who held her leash. She looked at the door that separated her from her son. She was trying to make up her mind.

—-------------------------------------------------------------

The air in the bedroom had grown heavy, thick with the scent of sex. Outside, the storm that had been threatening all evening finally broke. Rain began to lash against the windowpane, a rhythmic drumming that sealed them further into their private, dimly lit world.

Jax lay beside her, his hand resting possessively on her stomach, his thumb tracing the line of her hip bone. He wasn't touching her with the reverence of a lover anymore; he was touching her with the casual familiarity of an owner inspecting his property.

Eva stared up at the ceiling, her body humming with a strange, contradictory energy. She felt exhausted, drained by the forced orgasm and the emotional whiplash of the last hour. Yet, beneath the fatigue, a wire was still pulled tight. Her skin felt too sensitive. Her mind, usually a fortress of discipline and tactical analysis, felt hazy, unmoored.

Jax shifted, propping himself up on one elbow. He looked down at her, his face shadowed, his eyes catching the faint light from the streetlamps outside.

"You're thinking too much," he whispered, his voice a low rumble that vibrated through the mattress.

He reached out, tracing an imaginary path with his index finger from her naval, up between her breasts, over her throat, and finally resting on the cool black metal of the choker.

"Imagine what wonders we could uncover together," he said seductively, tapping the metal lightly. "We’ve barely scratched the surface, Eva. All those naughty fantasies you harbor deep within your heart... the ones you never tell anyone because 'The Shadow' has to be perfect."

He leaned closer, his breath hot against her ear. "We could bring them to life with this. No limits. No rules. No super-strength to get in the way. Only passion and pleasure."

His voice held a mesmerizing quality, a dark gravity that pulled at her. Eva turned her head to look at him.

"I confess," Jax admitted, his voice dropping to a sultry, confessionary whisper. "I've fantasized about you countless times. Long before we started this."

Eva blinked, surprised. "You have?"

"Of course," Jax smirked. "Your strength. Your beauty. Your determination. Watching you walk through the club like you owned the place... it does things to a man."

Eva’s heart skipped a beat. It was a compliment, yes, but it felt edged.

"But..." she faltered, her throat tightening under the band. "I never imagined you thinking those things about me. You always seemed... annoyed."

Jax laughed softly, a dry sound. He traced her jawline with his fingertips, his touch sending shivers down her spine that had nothing to do with the cold.

"Why would you think that?" he mused, his voice thick with lust. "You're a strong woman, Eva. An inspiration to many. A literal superhero."

He paused, his hand moving to her throat, wrapping gently around the choker.

"But here's the secret, Eva. The thing nobody talks about. Sometimes, even the strongest women crave a taste of weakness," he whispered, the words hanging in the air like smoke. "A chance to surrender. A chance to stop holding up the sky and just... be taken."

Eva’s heart raced in her chest, her body aching with a sudden, sharp desire.

Jax’s words resonated deeply within her, stirring feelings she had long suppressed. Being The Shadow was a crushing weight. Every decision was life or death. Every movement had to be calculated so she didn't accidentally crush a door handle or break a hand. She was always in control. Always the adult in any situation. Always the protector.

The idea of letting go—of being forced to let go—was intoxicating.

"Perhaps," she whispered, her voice barely audible, shame coloring her cheeks. "Perhaps... we could explore this together."

Jax's eyes sparkled with excitement. It was the look of a gambler who had just seen his opponent blink.

"I've dreamed of this moment," he confessed, his voice trembling with a longing that felt terrifyingly genuine. "To see you weak. To see you beg. To claim you as mine, not because you let me, but because you can't stop me."

Eva’s breath hitched. It was a dangerous fantasy. It skirted the edge of everything she stood against. But stripped of her power, wearing the collar he gave her, the line between fantasy and reality was blurring.

She found herself nodding, her decision made by a part of her brain that had been starved for release.

"Okay, Jax," she murmured. "Show me what this choker can do."

Jax grinned, a wolfish expression of triumph. His hand slipped under the sheet, finding the hem of the yellow sundress she was still wearing—the dress the tech had created for her.

"Lift your arms," he coaxed, his voice a velvet whisper.

Eva complied, lifting her arms above her head as instructed, surrendering to the ritual.

But Jax didn't pull the dress off. He didn't reach for the hem of the dress.

He closed his eyes.

Eva felt the hum against her throat again.

The sensation was immediate. The yellow fabric of the sundress didn't bunch up or slide off; it dissolved. It felt like a thousand tiny silk moths taking flight from her skin at once. The weave unraveled at the molecular level, the nano-particles turning from solid matter back into invisible energy.

One moment she was clothed in summer yellow; the next, she was completely, starkly naked.

Eva gasped, the sudden exposure making her flinch. The cool air hit her skin everywhere at once. Her nipples hardened instantly, sensitive and erect beneath his gaze. She wondered, briefly, if that reaction was her own body or if the nano-tech was stimulating her nerve endings again.

Jax’s hunger for her was palpable. His eyes raked over her form, devouring the sight of her helplessness. He reached out, cupping her breast gently, weighing it in his hand.

"Jax," she whispered, her voice quivering. "What are you doing?"

"Teaching you to surrender," he growled, his thumb brushing over her nipple, eliciting a sharp intake of breath. "Teaching you to let go of everything you hold dear. The uniform. The dignity. The control."

Eva shivered. She instinctively wanted to resist, to push his hand away, to assert some boundary. But his words struck a chord deep within her psyche. She felt herself succumbing to his power, her body betraying her will.

"Show me," she croaked, her voice cracking with emotion.

Jax smiled, leaning down to brush his lips against her neck, right next to the metal band. "Such a lovely sight," he murmured, his tongue tracing a wet path down her spine, making her arch into him. "You look ravishing with that choker on. It suits you better than a cape ever did."

Eva blushed furiously, her pulse quickening.

Despite her initial hesitation, she felt herself surrendering to Jax's potent influence. She kept her arms lifted, exposing her tender flesh to his eager gaze. Jax ran his fingers lightly over her skin, exploring her ribs, her stomach, her thighs.

"I've wanted you for so long," he murmured, his voice thick with lust. "And I've had you, sure. But I've never really had you. There was always that... shield."

He paused, his hand resting flat on her stomach.

"Your abilities" he explained, his tone almost resentful. "Even when we were fucking, Eva, it felt like I was fucking a statue. A diamond. You were too durable. Too hard. I couldn't mark you. I couldn't squeeze you without feeling like I was gripping steel."

He squeezed her waist now. His fingers dug into her soft flesh, sinking in.

"But now?" he whispered, awe in his voice. "Now you're soft. Now you're real."

Eva’s heart raced, her mind swimming with conflicting emotions. She had always prided herself on her invulnerability. Hearing him describe it as a barrier to intimacy did hurt. It made her feel like her powers had stolen her womanhood.

Part of her wanted to fight the growing desire for Jax to dominate her, but another part—the part that just wanted to be human—craved validation.

She felt her muscles tense, her body primed for the anticipated onslaught. Jax took notice of her restlessness.

"You're such a tempting morsel," he rasped, his voice a low, sinful rumble. "I can't wait to devour you."

Eva arched her back, her nipples grazing against the coarse fabric of the sheets. Jax's eyes roamed hungrily over her body, his fingers tracing intricate patterns on her skin. He teased her, stroking her inner thigh, tantalizingly close to her moist entrance, but not touching it yet.

Eva groaned softly, her body yearning for release. The waiting was agony.

"Tell me what you want," Jax murmured, his voice a dark, delicious whisper. "Do you want me to touch you? Do you want me to fill you?"

Eva hesitated, unsure of how to respond. The words felt heavy, shameful.

"Yes," she whispered, her voice cracking with uncertainty. "I want you to touch me."

Jax smiled wickedly, his fingers dancing across her skin, circling but never landing. "And do you want me to fill you?" he asked, his voice a husky whisper. "Do you want me to take what's mine?"

Eva's heart raced, her body responding involuntarily to his touch. The emptiness inside her was an ache. "Yes," she repeated, her voice stronger this time. "Just fuck me already!"

Jax's grin widened, his eyes sparkling with wicked delight. "I'm going to enjoy every moment of this," he murmured.

He moved closer, positioning himself between her legs. His erection pressed against her inner thigh, hard and demanding.

"Relax," he cooed, his voice soothing. "Let go of control. Let me guide you through this experience."

Eva sighed softly, her body relaxing under his ministrations. She felt her inhibitions melting away, replaced by a rising tide of carnal desire. Jax sensed her vulnerability, his fingers caressing her skin with an almost reverent touch.

"Relax, baby," he murmured, his voice a soothing balm to her racing heart. "Let me show you the pleasures you've denied yourself for far too long."

Eva shuddered, her body arching instinctively toward his touch.

Jax leaned down, his face inches from hers. He looked serious now. Intense.

"I always felt like you were holding back with me..." he said slowly. "With your powers shielding you from experiencing true pleasure. You were always afraid you'd break me. Always holding back your strength."

He grabbed her wrists, pinning them to the pillow above her head. He didn't need super-strength to do it. She was weak enough now that his grip was iron.

"I'm gonna fuck you so hard now, Eva," he promised, his voice low and gritty, "that you will wish you had gotten rid of your powers sooner. I'm going to wreck you."

Eva felt goosebumps erupt all over her body at hearing those words. It was a threat, and a promise, and a fantasy all rolled into one.

"Jax..." she breathed, surrendering the last shred of her resistance. "Take me!"

Jax's grip tightened around her wrists. "As you wish, my slut," he breathed.

He positioned himself between her spread thighs, his erection pressing against her slick entrance. Because he had used the tech earlier to relax her muscles, she was ready for him. The barrier was gone.

"Ready?" he murmured.

Eva nodded, her heart pounding in her chest.

He didn't thrust. He glided.

He sank into her slowly, filling her inch by inch. Without her durability to resist him, the sensation was overwhelming. She felt him stretching her, filling the void, claiming the space inside her body.

Eva cried out in delight, her head thrown back, her body pulsing with pleasure.

"Oh, yes, Jax," she gasped, her voice hoarse with desire. "Fuck me harder."

Jax obliged. He began to move, his pace increasing, his cock driving deep within her. Their bodies moved in perfect harmony, the rhythmic slapping of flesh against flesh filling the room.

"Oh, yes, Jax," Eva moaned, her voice breaking. "Don't stop."

Jax kissed her neck, right over the pulse point, his lips leaving a trail of fire on her skin.

"Never," he growled, his voice heavy with lust. "You belong to me now, Eva. Body and soul."

He released her wrists, letting his hands roam over her body, gripping her waist, her hips, her breasts. He was everywhere at once.

Eva felt her orgasm quickly building up to the brink again. Jax was definitely living up to his claim; without her powers dampening the sensation, everything was raw. Every nerve ending was firing at 100% capacity. She had never reached this level of pleasure this quickly.

She closed her eyes, letting go of all her vulnerabilities, preparing to truly submit to this dominant man—her man.

But just as she was about to fall over the edge, a flicker of movement caught her attention.

Her eyes snapped open.

From the corner of her eye, she saw it. The door to her bedroom—the one she thought was closed, the one that led to the hallway where Erik slept—moved.

Was it already open when she and Jax came in? She couldn't focus enough to remember. The tech, the sex, the intensity had blurred everything.

By habit, she tried to focus her powers. She tried to send her hearing out to scan the hallway, to check for a heartbeat, to reassure herself that it was just a draft.

But there was nothing. Just the silence from the use of choker.

Panic flared in her chest, sharp and cold. She turned her head in that direction, squinting into the gloom of the hallway.

And then she saw him.

Erik.

He wasn't sleeping. He wasn't gone.

He was standing there, in the shadows of the doorframe. His wide eyes were staring back into hers, filled with shock, confusion, and horror.

He was watching.

—----------------------------------------------------------------------

The air in the room seemed to crystallize, freezing into a single, horrific tableau.

Eva lay pinned beneath Jax, her legs spread wide, her body slick with sweat and the fluids of their intimacy. Inside her, Jax was deep, filling her completely, his hips poised for the next thrust.

But Eva wasn't feeling the pleasure anymore. She wasn't feeling the nano-tech warmth or the submissive haze. She was feeling a cold, jagged spike of absolute terror piercing her chest.

Erik.

Her son. Her innocent, eighteen-year-old boy. The reason she had built this entire lie, the reason she wore the choker, the reason she breathed.

He was standing in the doorway.

The light from the hallway was dim, but to Eva’s eyes—even dulled by the choker—he was painfully clear. He was wearing his pajamas, his hair messy from sleep. One hand was resting on the doorframe, gripping the wood so hard his knuckles were white.

But it was his eyes that destroyed her.

They were wide, saucer-like discs of shock. They weren't looking at her face. They were looking at her body. They were looking at her naked breasts, heaving with exertion. They were looking at her legs, wrapped around Jax’s waist. They were looking at the junction where Jax’s body was buried inside his mother.

"Oh god!"

The words ripped out of Eva’s throat, a strangled gasp of panic.

"Jax! Wait! STOP!"

She tried to scramble backward, to close her legs, to push him off. She slammed her hands against Jax’s chest, shoving with everything she had.

"STOP IT!" she screamed, the desperation shrill and frantic.

But she had no powers.

Her push, which should have sent Jax flying through the wall, was nothing more than the feeble struggle of a panicked woman. Jax didn't even budge. He was heavy, anchored by his own muscle and the leverage he had over her.

Worse, he misinterpreted the struggle.

To Jax, lost in the rhythm and the power trip, her sudden thrashing felt like the climax of her submission. He thought she was fighting the pleasure, fighting the surrender he had demanded. He thought it was part of the game.

"Don't fight it, Eva," he growled, his voice thick with lust, unaware of the audience in the doorway.

Instead of stopping, he drove forward.

He thrust into her with brutal, punishing force. At the same time, his mind connected with the interface of the choker.

Tighten.

The command fired through the neural link.

Eva felt the nano-tech inside her respond instantly. Her vaginal walls, already sensitive and over-stimulated, clamped down with crushing force. The tech seized her muscles, locking her onto him, trapping him inside her like a vice.

"NO!" Eva shrieked, her head whipping back and forth, tears streaming down her face. "JAX! HE'S WATCHING! STOP!"

But Jax was too far gone. The sensation of her tightening around him—the supernatural grip of the nano-tech combined with her frantic movements—pushed him past the point of no return.

"Yeah," Jax groaned, grabbing her hips, his fingers digging into her skin. "Take it."

He didn't hear her. Or if he did, he didn't care.

He slammed into her again. And again. Relentless.

The friction was unbearable. The stimulation was a direct assault on her nervous system. Eva’s body, betrayed by the technology she wore, began to spasm.

She looked at the door. Erik was still there. He hadn't moved. He was frozen in the headlights of his mother’s degradation.

She saw his mouth open slightly, a silent gasp of horror.

Then, Jax delivered the final command.

"Cum for me, slut!"

The choker hummed. The neural impulse fired.

It hit Eva like a lightning bolt.

"AHHHHHHH!"

The scream that tore from her throat was not human. It was a raw, animalistic howl of agony and pleasure tangled together in a knot of pure trauma.

Her back arched off the mattress, her spine bowing like a drawn bow. Her eyes rolled back into her skull, the whites flashing in the dim light. Her fingernails dug into the sheets, trying to find purchase on a world that was slipping away.

She couldn't stop it. Her body convulsed, wave after wave of synthetic orgasm crashing through her, washing away her will, her shame, her identity. She was twitching uncontrollably, her legs flailing in the air, her toes curling until they cramped.

She was loud. She was messy. She was completely undone.

And Erik saw it all. Their eye contact does not break even for a moment.

He saw his mother—the strong, composed, secretive woman who raised him—reduced to a screaming, writhing mess beneath a criminal. He saw her eyes roll back. He heard the guttural, wet sounds of her climax.

Jax, oblivious to the destruction he was causing, rode the wave with her. He felt her pussy pulsating around his cock, milking him with a rhythmic, mechanical ferocity that was beyond nature.

"Fuck," Jax groaned, his voice gritty and loud in the silence of the apartment.

"This is what I love about your pussy," he grunted, the words slurring with his own pleasure. "Most sluts... most whores... They squeeze a little. But yours?"

He slammed into her again, holding her down.

"It's on another level, my slut! The way it wraps around my cock... the way it twitches... it's just divine!"

Eva heard him. Through the roar of blood in her ears, through the haze of the orgasm, she heard every single degrading word.

Slut. Whore. Divine.

And she knew Erik heard them too.

The shame was hotter than the orgasm. It burned through her veins like acid. Her son was listening to her lover rate her performance. Her son was watching her lose her mind.

As the waves of pleasure began to subside, leaving her trembling and broken, Eva’s vision cleared just enough to focus on the doorway again.

The door was moving.

Erik was backing away. His face was a mask of pale shock, his eyes hollow. He looked like he had just seen a ghost. Or a murder.

He stepped back into the darkness of the hall. The door clicked shut.

Click.

The sound was quiet, but to Eva, it sounded like a gunshot.

"Jax..." she managed to squeak out, her voice a wrecked whisper. "Jax...!"

Jax was still moving inside her. He was still chasing the aftershocks, grinding his hips against hers, trying to wring every last drop of sensation from her body.

"Almost there," he muttered into her neck.

"You have to stop now!" Eva cried, the panic turning into a cold, hard rage.

She looked at him. She looked at the man who had promised to protect her. The man who had promised to keep Erik safe.

He hadn't protected him. He had exposed him. He had turned her into a spectacle for her own son.

Something inside Eva snapped.

It wasn't a physical snap. It was psychic. It was the breaking point of a mother who had pushed down her power for too long.

Deep in her cells, beneath the cold suppression of the nano-tech, the dormant energy of The Shadow flared. It wasn't a gentle awakening. It was a nuclear reaction fueled by shame and fury.

GET OFF ME.

The thought screamed through her nervous system. It hit the choker’s interface like a tidal wave.

The black metal band around her neck, which was designed to suppress bio-electric energy, suddenly encountered a surge it lacked the capabilities to handle. The blue pulse light on the inner seam flared bright white.

Sizzzzzzle.

Eva felt the metal become iron-hot against her throat. It burned.

Then—CRACK.

With a sound like a pistol shot, the choker shattered.

Fragments of black plastic and metal flew outward, pinging against the headboard and the walls. The nano-tech signal died instantly.

The silence broke.

The world came rushing back.

The hum of the refrigerator. The thumping bass of the car outside. The electrical buzz of the lamp. And the frantic, terrified heartbeat of Erik in the room next door.

Thump-thump-thump-thump.

It was all there. The power flooded her veins, hot and familiar and terrifyingly strong.

Jax, who was in the middle of a thrust, suddenly stopped. He frowned, looking down at her. "What the—"

Eva didn't let him finish.

She placed one hand on his chest. It wasn't a push this time. It was a launch.

She shoved.

Jax flew.

His 220-pound frame was lifted into the air as if he weighed nothing. He sailed backward, cleared off the bed, and crashed into the dresser on the opposite wall with a bone-rattling THUD. Perfume bottles and framed photos clattered to the floor.

"Jesus!" Jax wheezed, sliding down to the carpet, winded. He looked up at her, eyes wide with genuine fear. "Eva? What the hell?"

Eva sat up. She didn't cover herself. She didn't cower. She sat on the edge of the bed, naked, her hair wild, her chest heaving, her eyes glowing with a faint, dangerous luminescence in the dark room.

She ignored Jax. She turned her head slowly, staring at the closed bedroom door.

She listened.

She could hear Erik moving. He was pacing. No, he was sitting on his bed. His breathing was ragged, fast. He was crying. Soft, muffled sobs into his pillow.

He saw.

The realization settled over her like a shroud. The damage was done. The one thing she had sacrificed everything to prevent—the contamination of his innocence—had happened in the worst possible way.

She looked down at the broken pieces of the choker scattered on the sheets. The device that was supposed to give her freedom had just cost her everything.

She turned to look at Jax, who was scrambling to his feet, looking sheepish and alarmed.

"I..." Jax stammered, holding his hands up. "I didn't know the tech would fail. It must have overheated. I told you, Leonard said it was a prototype..."

He was lying, she could tell from his damn heartbeat. He was spinning.

Eva stood up. She towered over the room, her presence filling the space, the Shadow returning to the flesh.

"Get dressed," she said. Her voice wasn't loud. It was dead calm. "And get out."
