Causing a Distraction

Nicola wandered back to her desk and started swatting up on and memorising examples of her work over the past few years that demonstrated she was ready to move up to the next level. It was clear there were plenty, and she felt confident she was better qualified and more capable than any of her competitors for promotion. That said, while her own interview would now be assessed entirely fairly thanks to Priscilla's magic, that same rule didn't apply to everyone else.

She watched with distaste as Lee strolled smugly past her towards the interview room like he already had the job in the bag. As things stood, she figured he was probably right. It wasn't that he was good at his job or worked very hard, as neither of those things were true, but he was a great networker who was practically mates with the people who were about to interview him. From his total lack of nerves, it was entirely plausible that Lee had already been assured he only had to turn up to be given the job. Nicola hadn't traipsed into the office naked to just sit by and let that happen. So, not long after her rival had made his way into the interview room, she walked over and knocked on the door.

"Oh, hello Nicola, your interview isn't until later" Anne reminded her politely.

Anne was the nice lady from HR who was supposed to make sure this process was fair and above board, though in reality she was only in the room to tick a box and would have almost no influence on the decision that was going to be made. That would instead fall to Dean and Boyd, the two most senior managers in Nicola's department, both of whom spent plenty of time socialising with Lee as soon as the clock hit five, while she stayed behind to get the kind of work that he skimped on finished. This felt like a formality if she didn't intervene.

"I just wondered if I could sit in and observe the interview, it might help me to prepare for mine"

The panel shared a look. Though this did seem an unorthodox request, none of them could find anything wrong with it.

"Sure, that should be fine" Anne agreed.

"Great, thanks!"

Nicola went and sat in a chair that was conveniently placed at the back of the room, behind the panel but directly facing Lee. It was the perfect spot for what she had in mind. On top of being lazy and fairly stupid, Lee was also a sleaze who had made many suggestive and highly inappropriate remarks to Nicola in the past, and he wasn't ashamed to ogle her openly if there weren't other people around to witness it. So she hoped he would appreciate the method she had chosen to take him down with.

"What made you decide you were ready to apply for this position, Lee?"

That was such an easy question, just an excuse for him to make up a load of positive sounding bullshit his buddies could use to justify giving him a job he wasn't qualified for. Well, Nicola's bosses weren't the only people here capable of rigging the interview process.

"In the three years I've worked for this company I have consistently...I have cons....er..."

Lee trailed off as he looked over his interviewer's shoulder with a glazed expression. Nicola was running her finger gently and teasingly around her areola while smiling at her colleague and even giving him a cheeky wink.

"Lee, is everything okay?" Dean asked with a hint of concern.

"Just take a breath. Interviews can be rather nerve racking" Anne smiled kindly, totally misreading the physical sensations Lee was currently experiencing.

"Right, so as I was saying, in the time that I have been working here I have always...I have er, oh God.."

"Okay, then can you please tell us why you think you are ready to apply for the position you are interviewing for. It's not a complicated question!"

"I'm sorry, did I cause a distraction?" Nicola asked in mock innocence, twisting the knife.

"You did absolutely nothing wrong" Anne assured her emphatically "I'm just sorry one of your male colleagues saw fit to sexualise you in the workplace in order to satisfy his base instincts"

"I think you've answered the question as to whether or not you are ready for a promotion quite definitively" Dean told Lee sternly "You can go"

Once he was out of the room, and all three interviewers had apologised profusely to Nicola for the behaviour of the last interviewee, the next one was called in.
