Catching up.

It didn’t take long for the police to take John back to the station. He didn’t fight them when they tried to arrest him, so he ended up in cuffs in a matter of seconds. If he had fought, he figured that it was possible that he could have won, even though both of the officers that showed up to take him away had guns. However, now that he knew a little bit more about Gaia, he figured that it probably wasn’t worth it to pick a fight with the local law outside of a kingdom or a barrier.

So… he let them drag him off, back to a lonely concrete cell in the center of Springfield where he was **** to sit and wait… and wait… and wait, until someone finally let him use a phone to call Robyn. Unfortunately, the call didn’t last long. When the call connected and someone answered on the other end, John barely got two words in before he heard a stern voice bark back at him.

“I’m already on my way.” Click.

After that, John was left to sit with his own thoughts in silence. An experience that became downright uncomfortable for him after the first two minutes had passed. It wasn’t hard for him to find something to distract himself with, he just didn’t want to dive headfirst back into his abilities and pop-ups yet unless he had to. Unfortunately, his other options involved pulling out a cell phone from his inventory that he shouldn’t have had or talking with the cops. Both ideas seemed like they would get him in trouble.

So… when the familiar blonde ‘Officer Abbot’ showed up at the door to his cell to ask him some questions, he finally dragged his pop-ups back into view and ignored her. She tapped on the bars of his new cage a couple of times to try and get his attention and asked him why he was waving his hands in the air, but John wasn’t shaken by her presence all that much this time.

For a moment, he had a fleeting thought pass through his head and wondered if his lack of fear and anxiety at being arrested meant that he was getting used to his new life… or he figured it could have meant that he was starting to trust Robyn on some level. A part of him did actually believe that she would bail him out, but he couldn’t honestly say why he was so sure of that.

Despite his sour mood, the Gamer couldn’t stop himself from smiling when the alert for reaching level twenty came with a sudden burst of fanfare followed by the faint sound of applause and raucous cheering. He shook his head almost reluctantly as another pop-up appeared with a play/pause button so that he could control the sound of the celebration of his most recent accomplishments but fiddled with it nonetheless.

“That’s so stupid,” he muttered under his breath, even as his smile grew slightly wider when he realized he could use the play button to make the noise repeat.

After a moment when the cheering stopped, John glanced away from his pop-ups to hit play on the sound clip again and then smiled when he looked at his health bar. It ticked up slowly after he equipped his new title until it hit a total of 532 points, and then stopped. Though, it didn’t hold his attention for very long. When he noticed that his maximum mana had increased when he hit level twenty as well, John let out an audible sigh of relief, and silence followed. Officer Abbot, who had been questioning him up until this point, stared at the young man through the bars of his cell as he gradually went back to waving his hands through the air in precise, little patterns.

“What the fuck?!” There wasn’t even an attempt to try and hide his reaction to the changes his pop-ups made this time. Once he saw the rush of money appear on his character sheet, the Gamer jumped back from his screens as if one of them had tried to attack him. The cop who was questioning him also jumped back when he heard him cry out. After a moment, John realized that it wasn’t Officer Abbott in the room with him anymore. Instead, a tall man with a bald head and smooth skin the color of dark chocolate was watching over him.

Once both of them had settled back into place again, the cop drew a wooden club and smacked the bars with it, causing John to jump, alone this time, before the cop shouted at him to calm down. The Gamer merely cast a glare in his direction.

“Beating the bars doesn’t help with that…” he growled under a low breath, and then he swore again when he looked at the description of his newly evolved ability and its level. “WHAT THE FUCK?!”
