Chapter 8 by 11kestrels 11kestrels

What happens next?

Captain Kirk

When you arrive in the transporter room, several of the ship's commanding officers are there to greet you. There's Doctor McCoy, who's there to check on Sandy and baby Alessa, Mr Spock who is there for purely scientific reasons, and Captain Kirk himself.

Kirk steps forward with a big smile on his face. He offers you his hand, and you shake it. "You did a fine job down there, Crewman. You held up under pressure, and you probably saved the lives of the entire landing party. But this also presents us with a bit of a dilemma. What do we do about the baby? We're not really equipped to house families, except in emergency situations. Starfleet regulations do not allow for families aboard starships. What do you think we should do about this?"

You take a deep breath. "If I may be so bold as to say, sir, blast Starfleet regulations! They need to be more tolerant of family life, even on a starship." You look over at Sandy who's holding Alessa. She smiles at you, and silently mouths the words "Thank you."

Kirk laughs, and gives you a pat on the back. "Crewman, you're absolutely right. It's time we start shaking things up around here. What Starfleet doesn't know won't hurt them. I think we can keep the baby secret for a while, at least." He starts to move away, then turns back to you. "By the way, Crewman. I'm giving you a much deserved promotion. You're now Lieutenant Commander Doe. Now why don't you get over there, and see to the young lady and her baby? See to their comfort."

You can't help the Cheshire cat grin that follows. "Yes sir!" you say as you salute.

You walk over to Sandy, who's still in deep conversation with Doctor McCoy and Mr Spock, answering questions about her ordeal. McCoy spots you, and gives you a wink. "Well done, Crewman. Or should I say Lieutenant Commander? You did well under pressure, and you helped bring a new life into the Universe."

Spock raises an eyebrow. "Doctor, he was only doing the most logical thing."

McCoy turns to Spock. "You know Spock. This baby has something in common with you. It has green blood. I hope to God it doesn't turn out like you."

Spock crosses his arms. "Really doctor. We should all hope the baby doesn't turn out to be as illogical and irrational as you."

McCoy points his finger at Spock, and gets ready to deliver one of his snappy comebacks, but for some reason, he says nothing. He turns back to you and Sandy as Spock walks away. "Well, the baby is perfectly healthy. And she's no threat to the ship or crew. Now why don't the three of you go get some rest? You've been through quite an ordeal."

The End?
