Chapter 81 by duskdawn duskdawn

What's next?

Camilla and Kara: Crippled

"You need to stop pushing yourself, Kara..." Camilla groans from her bed, laying on her back. "You're just as bad as me, right now."

"This is nothing, Cammy..." The newly-evolved mio leans against the counter of her girlfriend's abode as she takes a deep breath.

"It's clearly not nothing, Kara." The brunette sighs. "Save your strength. I'm not hungry anyway."

"And now who's downplaying their suffering?" Kara wearily giggles, lifting up the knife once more to begin preparing a sandwich. "Let's not forget you're somehow still pregnant. Or do you think Gilford was wrong?"

Camilla sighs again, weakly wiping her face. "No, no. He's not wrong. I still feel queasy..."

The kitsune giggles again. "Don't worry, Cammy. I'll be..." She suddenly stops, blowing air while she leans on the counter again. "I'll be here for you. Every step of the way."

"Kara, you need rest just as much as I do, if not more." The captain looks at the kitsune's exposed ears and tails, Kara being too weak to maintain the illusion to hide them.

"If Mother believed that, then I would still be at home."

"Or maybe she realized there was no stopping you." Camilla smiled. After some time, Kara finishes making the sandwich for her girlfriend, and slowly walks it over to the injured captain. When she sets it on Camilla's lap, she begins walking away, but the brunette grabs her hand. "Oh no you don't. My bed's getting cold, and I need a furry friend to keep me warm."

Kara giggles, quickly relenting. With a small burst of energy, she lifts up Camilla's cover and slides herself in, nestling into the shoulder. The kitsune purrs, her ears tickling Camilla's cheek. "Oh, sorry." She readjusts so her ears don't touch the brunette's skin.

A long silence passes before the captain speaks again. "It's still so crazy seeing you like this..."

Kara hums. "I...I wanted to tell you earlier, but you know how Mother is."

Camilla giggles. "I meant as a girlfriend, but the fact you're not human is just as crazy."

The blond giggles as well, her breathing slowing...

. . .

I open 'my' eyes, finding 'my' face buried in someone's shoulder. I pull out a little bit, seeing Cammy look down at me with a smile, a half-eaten sandwich on a plate on her chest. "About time you checked in. I didn't realize being in prison meant solitary confinement."

"I haven't done anything that bad, yet." I giggle nervously. "Good to see you're doing well."

She scoffs. "If you count broken legs as 'doing well', then I'm doing better than 'well'."

I give a soft smile. "Why don't I help you with that, then?" I raise the covers, shifting to get out of bed.

"Don't overwork Kara, okay? She's had it rough the past couple days."

I easily slide away, lining up my body with Camilla's knees. "What happened?"

As she speaks, I begin healing the damage I can on her splinted legs, the glowing light sputtering at first before continuing properly. "She evolved, probably the same time you went all seraphim on the Empress, but according to her mom, the earliest she should have evolved was a few years from now. She won't tell me how bad it really is, but she's been completely exhausted, barely able to move without stopping to rest. I think she was even asleep before you showed up."

Seraphim? Is that what that was? "Huh, that's weird. I don't feel tired right now..."

The human hums. "Do you think it could be because of that...what was it... You have some kind of ability that makes you, I want to say seven or eight times stronger?"

I take a moment to think. "That...could be it. Pure Land, right?"

"I think so. I never really got too good of a look at that." Cammy pauses. "Is that actually working?" She confusedly sits up a bit, setting her sandwich to the side as she looks at your handiwork. "Gilford and Kris couldn't do too much to heal bone."

I blush a bit. "Well, remember that Nephilic Blessing I gave you? Between that, one of my oaths, and I'm pretty sure I get a bonus from Kara, too, I can do a lot to heal you." My mouth curls into a smile.

"Wow...I might actually be able to move around, soon."

"Well, I doubt I can heal it completely, so take it easy for the next week or so, okay?"

"But I'll be able to walk?"

"Probably, but don't push yourself, okay? People aren't normally able to walk away from falling twenty stories, and for good reason." I stop healing her right thigh, moving down to her right shin. "Besides, if the bones fracture again, you could end up worse than before."

. . .

Cammy sits up on the bed, swinging her legs over the side as she stretches them. She flexes them in every way she can, grinning giddily the whole time. I offer a hand to help her stand up, and after a moment of thought, she takes it, pulling herself up. She sets her other hand on your shoulder to balance herself, in a way where an outsider might think I was trying to lead her in a dance. I lead her a few steps as she looks down at her legs, before she looks up at me, a wide smile on her face. Without warning, she lifts me up and spins me around, before bringing me in for a kiss.

Despite the warmth in my heart, a pit forms in my stomach...

Cammy pulls back, blushing. "Oh, uh, sorry." She chuckles, releasing me from her grasp. "I got carried away there..." Suddenly, she stumbles back, sitting on the bed as she holds her head. "Sorry, this is probably confusing...for both of you."

I sit next to her. "I...we are..." I set my hand on hers. "Don't worry, though. We'll-" I don't finish comforting 'my' girlfriend, as she suddenly slumps against my shoulder. "Cammy?" She's still breathing, just having fainted by the looks of it. "I guess you're still recovering..." I hug her tight for a moment before laying her back in bed. I snuggle back in with her, the same position I had 'woken up' in. "Let's not steal this from you, Kara."
