Chapter 16
by
Jpyric
Sleep comes quickly, covering him like a warm blanket.
Calm beginnings
Keith starts awake, disoriented and confused by his surroundings for a moment. After the initial shock, though, the events of the previous day come flooding in. There’s daylight streaming in through the window, and he’s all alone in Devin’s bed. The lizard boy is gone, though Keith smiles as he remembers the previous evening’s activities. Quite a night.
Stretching, he climbs out of bed, finding his clothes neatly laid out on a chair beside the dresser. Keith looks around the room as he pulls on his clothes, since he didn’t pay much attention before. The room is surprisingly sparse, save for a fancy looking computer setup at a desk in the corner. There’s a bookshelf full of books, and once again, attempting to read the titles makes Keith flinch in pain. Outside of that, there’s a dresser, likely full of clothes, and an open closet, mostly hung with various dresses.
The apartment is quiet as Keith exists the bedroom, and as he walks to the living room he sees Ava, sitting quietly on the couch and reading a book. She looks up as he emerges, and smiles.
“There you are. I was wondering how long you would sleep.”
Keith chuckles. “Big day yesterday. What time is it?”
Ava smiles again. “Yes, I suppose it was. It’s nearly nine. Devin decided you needed your sleep. He and Gina have morning classes. I would too, but I’m bringing you to your appointment with the professor.”
Keith nods, sitting down on the couch with Ava. “Ahh, okay. Is it far?”
She shakes her head, blushing slightly for some reason. “No, it’s only a couple blocks to the magical studies building. I thought we could walk. Is that okay?”
Keith shrugs. “Fine by me. Is it okay to have me out on the street like that?”
Ava nods. “You might get some strange looks, but Professor Theria explained that it’s not good to hide you. The only people we’re likely to see are my classmates anyway.”
Under her breath she mutters something. Keith can’t catch it all, but he does hear her say “..that bitch Lauren…” at one point. He raises an eyebrow, but she either doesn’t notice, or ignores it. Either way, her smile returns and she closes her book.
“If you want something to eat, I can make you something. Eggs? Toast? We don’t have a lot of time, but I can make you a quick breakfast.”
Keith nods. He’s not particularly hungry yet, but it’s probably good to eat before the meeting. Plus, Ava looks eager to make him something, like she really wants to do it.
“Sure, I’ll have some scrambled eggs, if it’s not too much trouble.”
Ava practically leaps to her feet. “You got it! Wait right here!”
Keith watches her go, smiling at her enthusiasm. She’s clearly as excited by his presence as the others, but shows it in a different way. From the couch, he can see her hurrying around in the kitchen, and catches her smiling to herself as she cooks. As if sensing his eyes on her, she glances over and meets his gaze. She stops for a moment, a smile on her face, then gasps, her eyes going wide as she goes back to cooking. Keith chuckles, and relaxes on the couch.
With a sigh, he closes his eyes, letting the smells coming from the kitchen waft over him. Incredible how much can change in a day. Yesterday he was alone, bored, and if he’s honest with himself, borderline depressed. And then he found himself pulled to another reality, and suddenly surrounded by attractive creatures…no, PEOPLE, he corrects himself…and they seem to find him just as attractive. He would pinch himself, but if this is a dream, he would rather stay in it. What a day!
And today promises to be just as interesting as yesterday!
