Kael nods, and the two of them head out the door.
Call to arms
When Kael and Ria arrive at the palace, they find Orin and Koa waiting outside the throne room. It seems that the summons was for everyone, not just them. As they approach, Orin chuckles and turns to Koa, holding out a hand.
“Told you they’d be together. Pay up.”
Shrugging his massive shoulders, Koa drops a few coins into Orin’s hand. “You called it. Can’t say I’m that surprised, though.”
Ria looks between the two of them. “Taking bets on our relationship, are we?”
Orin grins. “Hey, I can’t help it if you two are obvious. And Koa should know better than to take a sucker bet.”
Koa crosses his arms, looking down at Orin. “You’re getting cocky, little man. I think you’re overdue a beating to remind you to watch your mouth.”
Kael shakes his head, interrupting their banter. “Later. What’s going on?”
Orin shrugs. “No idea. We just arrived ourselves. No doubt it’s something to do with Karlia, though.”
Ria laughs. “Very observant, Orin. You’re just on fire today, aren’t you?”
Orin shoots Ria a venomous glance, but before he can retort, the doors swing open, and Bernal waves them inside. He closes them again once the champions enter, and the five of them approach the throne, where Lord Greyheart is seated. He looks tired, as if he hasn’t gotten much sleep of late, which is likely true. As they approach, however, he sits straighter, assuming his usual authoritative mien.
“You’re all here. Good. As you likely guessed, things are deteriorating quickly between us and Karlia.”
Orin glances triumphantly at Ria, who pointedly ignores him. Lord Greyheart continues. “Though no war has been declared, there have been several skirmishes along the border. I also have reports that their lead generals are being sent to begin operations in the area.”
Kael nods. “So we will be attacked soon, wether or not there’s a formal declaration of war.”
Lord Greyheart sighs. “It seems that way. I had hoped to find another resolution to this issue, but…it looks like there isn’t one. The rulers in Karlia seem to think they can overwhelm us quickly, before we can get any assistance.”
Koa crosses his arms. “And so we must stop them.”
Lord Greyheart nods. “Just so. I want the four of you to leave tonight, after dark. Try to slip out unseen. If we can surprise them by your presence, we’ll have an advantage. General Gavras will be in charge, he will direct your efforts once you arrive.”
Kael nods, recalling what he knows of General Gavras. A renowned commander, he could have been a champion himself had he been younger. A skilled warrior, a brilliant strategist, and a good person to boot, the general has the respect of his troops, and Kael can think of no one better to lead the defense.
Ria speaks up, bringing Kael back into the moment. “Anything else we need to know?”
Lord Greyheart shakes his head. “Nothing you don’t already know. I will say this, however. We cannot afford to lose this fight. There’s nowhere to retreat, no reserves to call upon.”
Orin scoffs. “With the four of us there? No chance. No one can beat us.”
Lord Greyheart gives a sardonic smile, lifting the stump of an arm. “I once thought that way too, and I paid the price for my overconfidence. Do not underestimate Karlia.”
Orin manages to look chagrined, and nods. “Of course, my lord. I’m sorry.”
Lord Greyheart smiles, genuinely this time. “No need to apologize, Orin. Your confidence is laudable, just be sure it doesn’t lead to arrogance or complacency. Remember, we’re fighting to protect everything we hold dear. And everyone.”
Lord Greyheart gives Kael a look, and Kael nods. “We won’t let you down, my lord.”
Lord Greyheart smiles again. “I know. Now go, my champions. Make your preparations, and do your duty. Luck be with you.”
The four of them bow, and leave the throne room.
