Chapter 147 by Jpyric Jpyric

Nothing needs to be said.

Buildup

Come the dawn, Petra is quick to leave, despite some obvious ****. Though she’s given herself completely to Kael, they both agree that it would appear improper for her to so quickly join the new royal family, especially just before the coronation. The other girls are sad that Petra won’t be moving in just yet, but everyone understands the situation. It’s a delicate time, and even in as unusual a kingdom as this, some things need to be handled correctly.

Thankfully, the coronation day arrives quickly, especially with as busy as Kael and Ria find themselves. Between matters of state, preparations for the ceremony, and overseeing the training of the new champions, the days pass in a blur. Speaking of the new champions, Kael is impressed by the way Orin has taken charge after the departure of Bernal. Kael is unsure whether it’s the new responsibility, the loss of Lord Greyheart, or his blossoming relationship with the lamia, Lyssa, but it seems he’s matured considerably. He still has the fearlessness and determination that makes him such a dangerous fighter, but it’s tempered now by a keen eye for detail and an impressive well of patience. Between Orin and Koa, the new recruits are picking up the job at hand rapidly.

The only real issues are in Kael’s head. And they’re not the sort of thing that Evie can just excise the way she did his nightmares. Despite reassurances from those around him, Kael worries. Stepping into the shoes of any ruler is difficult, and replacing someone as beloved as Lord Greyheart was is even more daunting. However, as the coronation draws close, Kael can’t help but notice the overwhelming support he seems to be seeing. Aides and nobles treat him respectfully, even kindly. Guards and soldiers salute him without hesitation, and seem to train harder in his presence. And most importantly, the populace seems to adore him, greeting him in throngs on the rare occasion he has reason to leave the palace compound.

Kael is bewildered by this, until Ria explains it to him, clearly amused by his befuddlement. “You’re a hero, big guy. And more than that, you’re practically Lord Greyheart’s adopted son. Evie is his daughter. Of course the people like you.”

She punches him in the shoulder. “It doesn’t hurt that you’re a cutie, too!”

Kael rolls his eyes, but Ria looks at him seriously. “Honestly, big guy, it’s not that surprising. Lord Greyheart chose you. He chose US. And you’re a good person. Everyone knows it. Just keep being you, and one day you’ll be even more beloved than he was. And together we’ll raise everyone up.”

Kael smiles. “Thanks Ria. I knew I kept you around for a reason.”

Laughing, Ria punches him again.
