Chapter 10

How does a healer handle four muggers?
Brutal and bloody
Maximilian rotated his shoulders, popped his neck and took a deep breath. As he flexed his fingers, he was recalling old memories - memories of the life he had lived back on Earth. Max was weaker than what he had been at this age and the muscles were not used to complicated movements, not that Maximilian had been keeping up with the martial arts in his old age anyway. But he remembered some things that could be put to use.
"Anna, stay behind the bed. If things look bad, you are probably better off jumping out the window than remaining behind", Maximilian said in a serious tone without looking back. He then grabbed the chair, raised it above his head and stood to the side of the door. Dutifully, Anna shuffled behind the bed and whispered:
"They are right outside"
The door opened and a heavyset woman rushed in. Or rather, she tried to rush in but Maximilian brought the chair down on her head, hard. The assailant fell down like a sack of potatoes. Which meant that the second invader, a man carrying a wicked looking curved dagger, stumbled as he also tried to rush into the room but slipped down on his knees with a curse. This gave Max an opening which he exploited fully by kicking the side of the man's head which in turn hit the doorframe with a sickening sound and the dagger fell from his hand on the stained floor planks.
The third attacker - a smaller woman - had time to realise the situation was not what they had expected and instead of rushing in, she swung her wooden baton, forcing Max to step back in a hurry. As he retreated, he noticed that the first woman was trying to get up, so Maximilian kicked her head as well. Unfortunately, that was all the time the second woman needed and her baton struck Max on his left shoulder and the young man screamed in pain. He had **** but to release his healing magic as he stepped back further. As his legs felt the bed behind him, he sighed in relief as his shoulder magically healed and the pain and numbness vanished. The baton-wielding lass frowned as she saw him regain his posture.
"Kate, get the fuck up already", she growled at her bulky companion who again struggled to get to her feet. Maximilian took stock of the situation. The lanky innkeeper looked surprised and scared, standing outside the room in the hallway. He was probably having second thoughts about this. The other man remained on the floor, motionless - either **** or dead. Which left the two women as his remaining opponents. The bigger one would regain her footing soon and then he would be in real trouble.
"Anna, give me the other chair", Max asked calmly, without taking his eyes off the baton-wielder. The young diviner followed orders well and, before their enemies could react, she handed the chair to Max who, without a pause, slammed it against the head of the point-woman. Two chairs and a kick seemed to be her limit as she fell flat again, though this time blood was trickling out of her nose and mouth.
"Fucking bastard!" Screamed Princess Baton and rushed Max, who leaned backwards which caused him to fall on the bed. The enraged brute could not stop in time and was about to fall on him but Maximilian brought his knees up and slammed them into her, hitting her hard enough that she went flying through the window with a blood-curdling scream that was suddenly cut off. Max leaped off the bed in order to grab the curved blade lying on the floor. The slimeball of a innkeeper looked terrified now that Max brandished a **** weapon at him.
"Ah, milord, good master, please have mercy, this is just a terrible misunderstanding, you see, I did not intend any harm, you see, just few coins nothing more", the man babbled as Max approached him.
"As much as I would love to believe you", Max started, "I'm certain that this was NOT the first time you've pulled this trick. How many other fresh graduates have you murdered over the years? That's how you haven't been caught, right? You only rob and **** graduates, nobody will miss us.
Maximilian grabbed the innkeeper and dragged him inside the room before addressing his diviner teammate:
"Anna, go drag that dead bitch back inside before anyone finds her corpse. Then find the wench and get her to lock the doors. Tie her up in one of the other rooms and come back", he instructed her. Anna, cheeks all rosy and a gleam in her eyes, shaking from adrenaline, nodded and hurried outside. Max waited until he heard the creaking of the stairs before he slit the throat of the pleading innkeeper and then the **** woman lying on the floor and finally, just to be sure, the original owner of the curved knife. Rummaging through their pockets, Maximilian pocketed few coins and the sheath for the dagger, which was soon safely tucked inside his robe. Finally safe, he slumped on the bed, letting out a long sigh. A tremble passed through his muscles. He had a moment before Anna would return.
"You get a second life Maximilian and you can't avoid repeating the same mistakes you did before", he cursed himself. He got up and spat on the corpse of the innkeeper. "Why did you have to **** me to kill again?" The corpse did not answer. Maximilian sighed again.
"Hmm, I guess we both need new clothes", he muttered himself as he left the room and closed the door behind him so that Anna would not see the blood and the corpses. It was not long until Anna returned.
"All finished sir", she reported, tone timid. Maximilian realized she was conflicted - half in fear and half in awe of the seemingly young man she had hitched her future to, who was so capable and ruthless. He would have to address that topic sometime but now was not the time.
"Good. Let's find a clean room and finally get some rest. And I'll need your mouth again", Maximilian explained as he released more healing magic to roam around his tired body. Anna smacked her lips and smiled, pulling her muddy robe over her head. Morning and consequences would come soon enough.
Will Max sleep peacefully through the night?
