Chapter 12 by Zingiber Zingiber

Choose one and narrate the effect of the complication.

Broken wand, dash it all!

With a flourish of your wand, you cast FETCH. The soppy Leontes girl with the braid and glasses spreads her arms and lifts up into the air on the wings of your spell, but rather than a smooth arc to the sand like Vera Furze, you find yourself straining to hold this girl out of the water. You grimace, bolstering your spell with exclamations of power. The two Minerval girls titter, off to the side, but are not gauche enough to do more. That Leontes upperclassman, well, he grunts and chuckles like an ill-cultured brute.

The Leontes girl begins to look worried and scrabbles for her own wand as she floats low above the surface of the Chilly Tarn. Her advance wavers and slows. Her eyes widen behind her glasses.

Yet you cannot fail, you must not fail. Giving it your all, you repeat FETCH with all your might. She speeds across the ominous dark water and straight into your arms, bearing you back, over, and down onto the sand with her full weight atop you and your extended wand.

Snap! goes your wand. Whoof! out goes your breath. Thump! goes your head against the sand. Crackling sparks of blue lightning and glows of clinging foxfire mark your wand's fatal destiny. There's laughter from stage right or thereabouts. All is topsy-turvy as you collect your wits.

There's a weighty young woman lying atop you, nose to nose. The soft warmth of her bosom is rather pleasant, and her breath is sweet enough. And speaking of warm pleasantness, your tenderly exposed manhood feels rather nice with her lower parts pressing down upon it, clothed though she is. In the event, you clear your throat, take as deep a breath as you can, and introduce yourself.

"Pleased to meet you, Miss," you say, looking up into her glasses, which have held on despite all. "May I introduce myself? Godwyne Aberdean, House Draconis."

"Aberdean? P-pleased to meet you!" she gushes, thankful for avoiding a dip in the Chilly Tarn. "Abigail Churn, House Leontes! Oh dear, I should get up. And your poor wand!"

"Quite all right," you say, too close to quite focus on her. "I mean...anyway." You bite back a couple of innuendoes. Falling under a fair maiden has put your wit off balance. "Happy I could help you off the boat."

What's your next move?

  • Get to know Miss Churn better. The propinquity factor is outstanding. Roll +Bravery (+0) to ENCOUNTER her.
  • Chat up the Minerval girls, who seemed to admire your physique. Roll +Cunning (+1) to encounter Fay (the round-faced blonde) and Morgan (the scarecrow with long black flyaway hair).
  • Deliver Miss Churn into the mercies of that Leontes lout, and see if you can convince him that you've done something admirable for his new House member. Roll +Bravery to ENCOUNTER him, maybe angling for a FAVOR down the line.
  • Give everyone a bow, apologize for not having your calling cards handy, and make a brave exit, looking for somewhere to make yourself presentable. Roll an ENCOUNTER (choose anyone there, or Dorothy the Porter) to get directions.
  • March up bold as brass and present yourself at the door of House Draconis with your willy hanging out from the effects of the Chilly Tarn on your clothes. Roll +Ambition (+2) to make a first impression on the Warden, Tutor, or a Prefect. (If things go wrong, you can call on Anastasia's FAVOR).
  • Skip ahead? (you'll still be missing your wand)
  • Something else?

With a broken wand, you will be at -2 to CAST A SPELL or HAVE A MAGIC DUEL. You can replace or repair it similar to removing a CONSEQUENCE by encountering your house Tutor or Head with a 10+. On a 7-9, they will set you a GOAL to fulfill before your wand is restored, or perhaps try to pass off a rubbish wand that leaves you at a -1 penalty.

You have 0 XP, your wand is broken, you've made an impression, you're naked below the waist. Your sister Anastasia is your FRIEND who owes you a FAVOR.

What's your next move?
