Breaking News

A dramatic **** ended in gunfire early Tuesday morning when a 29-year-old Lincoln resident opened fire on an intruder who had taken his wife hostage and attempted to enter their home, BBC confirmed.

According to the Lincoln Police Department, officers responded to a 911 call at approximately 2:17 p.m. from the residence after the homeowner reported that an armed man had kidnapped his 26-year old wife and **** her to bring them to their home.

The homeowner, identified by authorities only as Stephen, told investigators he had been working in his home office when he heard his wife’s voice home early. He retrieved a legally owned handgun from a biometric safe and moved toward the sound.

“When I came around the corner, he already had the gun to her head,” Stephen told detectives in a recorded statement obtained by investigators. “He was yelling that he was going to take her with him if anyone tried to stop him. I didn’t have a choice.”

Police say the suspect, later identified as 28-year-old Mike Rebechon of Lincoln, became agitated when he realized Stephen was armed. Witnesses in neighboring homes reported hearing multiple shouts of “Let her go!” followed by several gunshots in rapid succession.

According to the preliminary investigation, Stephen fired five rounds from a 9mm pistol. Three bullets struck Rebechon in the torso and upper arm. Rebechon collapsed immediately. Police were not able to identify whether Rebechon was actually armed at the time of the shooting, citing that it was still an active investigation.

Stephen’s wife, who was not physically injured during the incident, was able to run to her husband after Rebechon fell. She called 911 while Stephen kept the suspect at gunpoint until officers arrived.

Rebechon was transported by ambulance to the hospital in critical condition with gunshot wounds to the chest and abdomen. Rebechon passed away from his injuries early Wednesday morning..

No charges have been filed against the homeowner at this time. The District Attorney’s Office is reviewing the case under the home defense law, which provides broad legal protection for residents who use deadly **** against intruders inside their homes.

Neighbors described the couple as quiet and friendly, often seen walking their dog in the evenings. One resident, who asked not to be named, said the sound of gunshots “felt surreal” in the normally peaceful subdivision.

“I’ve lived here 12 years and never heard anything like that,” the neighbor said. “You always think it happens somewhere else.”

Stephen and his wife declined to speak publicly but released a brief statement through their attorney: “We are grateful to be safe and together. We ask for privacy while we recover from this traumatic night.”

Police have not released further details about a possible motive. Investigators are exploring whether Rebechon targeted the woman randomly or had prior contact with her.

The incident remains under active investigation.
