Breakfast with Logan

"Do you know anybody who could help train me?" Mike asked Jean as she passed him his breakfast. "I mean, I would rather respect your wishes and all."

"Try one of the Worthington Industries programs," gruffed Logan as he drunk his beer. "Pretty boy's always doing something for mutants."

"Or maybe even Genosha," said Jean. "I know it's not ideal, with Magneto in charge. But he's just one men put in check by a bunch of mutants that we do trust."

"Right," muttered Mike. "Say, Jean? I have a question about psionic powers, how common is precognition?"

"What do you mean?" asked Jean. "Did you have a dream last night?"

"Yeah," said Mike. "It was weird. I saw all these different generations of X-Men. I saw the next generation and it was like there were two worlds they could live in - good or bad - and it all seemed to depend on some vampire lady who goes by Jubilee."

"What?" asked Logan, nearly spitting his breakfast out of his mouth. "What did you just say?"

"A vampire named Jubilee was in this dream I had regarding the future," said Mike.

"Xarus," whispered Jean.

"He's finally making his play," nodded Logan.

"The Avengers will handle it," said Jean. "We'll give them a call."

"Is that wise?" asked Mike.

"I'm sorry?" asked Jean.

"If this is a mutant problem, isn't it best if mutants handle it?" asked Mike. "I mean, there are no more X-Men, no more Fantastic Four... I don't know if it's best to leave things to the Avengers - a group that never looked out for us."

"We don't even know if you're telling the truth," said Logan.

"I'd telepathically scan you," said Jean. "But like I said, we don't do that anymore."

"Oh, please," said Mike. "He just chopped off Sabretooth's head yesterday! And from how that guy was talking, I doubt he'll be the last person to come after you. Are you going to leave that to the Avengers too? Or is this issue different because it's not about other mutants. My vision was right, your generations did fail mine."

"You don't know what you're talking about," brushed off Logan.

"Don't I?" asked Mike. "Prove me wrong. Take me with you to stop whoever sent Sabretooth after you."

"Logan, you don't need to do this," pleaded Jean.

"Katherine is what you'll name your daughter," said Mike suddenly, letting Jean's jaw drop in shock. "And given that she was in chains, being taken into a camp and sent to the gas chambers... I'm guessing that he does do it. The difference is, if I go with him, maybe we can avoid that dark fate. Maybe we can get the happy future I also saw."

"Precognition isn't absolute," said Jean. "You're a high level telekine, Mike. I've only seen one higher. I know you came here for training and I understand that. I know you see my generation as a failure and sometimes I do too. You say that Sabretooth came after us for a reason. Going after that reason could destroy my family. Going after Jubilee could destroy my family. My generation didn't fail because we chose to move on with our lives, we failed because we never set the example that you could as well. Yes, tomorrow Omega Red might come and try and kill us, but he might not. But if we go looking for him to kill him, then where we once had limitless choices, we're left with a binary one: either we die or he does. In seeking to prevent the dark future you see, you seek to understand the conditions that cause it and where before, there were limitless futures, now you have defined the conditions that leave you with only one. You can go be a hero, Mike... but I will not lose my family to this life again."

"Fine," said Mike, frustrated with her being so stubborn. "You said something about a flight. I'll take one to New York City. If you won't handle this Jubilee business, then maybe I will."
