Chapter 9 by Drexelhand Drexelhand

What's next?

Mike goes to District X

Mike hadn't said a word to Jean Grey or Logan after he left them. He could telekinetically tell that Jean Grey was absolute in her beliefs. She was probably right about the whole precognition thing, that it was not absolute and all but he could also telekinetically feel that Logan was not right with her point about Omega Red. There was something after him specifically that did not want him to be happy and what Jean Grey didn't understand was that seeking to stop it wasn't going to narrow their choices, since their choices had already been narrowed for them.

That was why Mike had half expected Logan to come out of nowhere and join him on his plane ride to New York City. Alas, he did not and Mike spent the lonely hours of the flight by himself. He had no money or anything. He'd probably have to spend his time a mutant flophouse somewhere in Mutant Town. Once known as the Middle East Side of New York City, Mutant Town was the region that the NYPD gave the official title of District X to give mutants in the city a legal place to vent and stay where human laws would be bent for them.

From what Mike could tell from his vision, the young mutant boy that Jubilee had killed had been brought from District X. Thus, it seemed reasonable to believe that whether or not Jubilee was in District X, her vampires were there capturing mutants. Right now it just seemed to be that she was feasting on them. But what if she wanted to do something worse? Deacon Frost was the name that had rung up in Mike's vision, he was Jubilee's creator and likely her boss. Then there was also that other person, Xarus, whom Jean Grey had mentioned. Those were two names that Mike knew he had to be on the lookout for.

He wanted to be trained up before he went out into battle against villains. It would still be reasonable for him to reach out to Worthington Industries, but at the end of the day, their goal was to make life better for mutants, not to fight battles for them. He could reach out to the Avengers as well, but that seemed like it would just lead to more trouble than it was worth.

Walking through District X, Mike couldn't figure out why any mutant would want to live there. It was two steps above the ghetto one block and ten steps below another. There were Maggia members running all around, mutant thieves at every turn, **** dealers and mercenaries. The few NYPD officers who wandered around seemed to be either exhausted or in on all the trouble.

"You lost, son?" asked a man in a trenchcoat.

"I'm looking for a place to stay," said Mike.

"You got any money?" he asked.

"Not really," answered Mike.

"See that building there?" asked the man. "They let kids stay for free. It's a charity home owned by Worthington. When you get there, tell them Detective Ortega sent you."

"Thanks detective," nodded Mike and he made his way over. Much like the cop had said, Mike would be allowed to stay there. It wasn't too bad, he got his own room, water and the promise of a meal - no matter the quality. At least he would be able to start searching for Jubilee from here.
