Chapter 10

What is plan B?
Body paint
"Let's the biggest, thickest, most opaque item we own," Sophie declared, scrambling up from the floor with renewed determination. She ignored the way her breasts bounced with the movement and the fact that Robin’s eyes were practically glued to her. "The heavy winter curtains in the living room. If I can't wear clothes, maybe I can wear... drapery!"
"Like a toga?" Viki asked, raising an eyebrow. "A very literal interpretation of window dressing?"
"Like armor," Sophie corrected, marching toward the living room. "It's thick fabric. It has layers. If my PJs turned invisible, maybe this will too, but at least I'll feel like I'm wearing something substantial."
They followed her into the living room where Robin helped her unhook one of the long, velvet blackout curtains. It was a deep burgundy color, heavy enough to block out the midday sun. Sophie wrapped it around herself, tucking the end in at her armpit to create a makeshift dress.
"There," she said, clutching the velvet tight. "I feel covered. I can't see through this, and it's thick enough to stop bullets. Tell me you see a classy lady in a burgundy evening wrap."
Robin stared. He blinked. He looked at the empty air where the curtain should have been. "Uh... Soph?"
"Don't say it," Sophie warned, squeezing her eyes shut.
"You're... uh... definitely not wearing a curtain," Robin confirmed, gesturing vaguely at her naked form. "I can see everything. The velvet just... vanished. It’s like you’re holding onto a ghost."
"Maybe it's too much fabric?" Viki suggested, leaning against the doorframe with a grin. "The curse has a limit. It can only make so much invisible at once. Try something smaller."
"Smaller," Sophie muttered, her panic rising. "Right. Okay. The throw pillows. The ones with the removable covers."
She grabbed one of the decorative throw pillows from the couch and stripped the fuzzy cover off. She shimmied into it, pulling it up like a pair of shorts. It was tight—very tight—and left absolutely nothing to the imagination, but technically, it was covering her hips and groin.
"This has to work," Sophie insisted, doing a little hop to settle the pillowcase. "It's fuzzy. It's textured. It's not standard clothing."
Robin’s face turned a shade of red that rivaled the velvet curtain. "Sophie... you have to stop doing this to me."
"What?" She looked down at herself. To her, she was wearing a fuzzy beige pillowcase that looked like a very short skirt. "Do you see it?"
"I see... a pillowcase," Robin croaked, averting his gaze. "But I see you inside it. Or... through it? It's invisible! You're just... naked with a weird outline around your hips!"
"An outline?" Sophie shrieked. "So I'm naked, but with airpants?"
"Airpants, exactly," Robin nodded vigorously. "And the pillowcase is... hugging you. Really closely. I can see... uh... details. A lot of details."
"Details?!" Sophie squeaked, trying to pull the pillowcase down to cover more of her thighs, but it only snapped back up, highlighting her lack of underwear. "Plan B is a failure! I'm stuck in invisible pants!"
"Okay, new plan," Viki interrupted, holding up a hand to stifle her laughter. "If the clothes vanish, we need to find something that isn't clothes, but can still be worn. Something that... maybe the curse doesn't recognize as an 'outfit'."
"Like what?" Sophie asked, near tears. "I can't go to class wrapped in tinfoil!"
"Body paint!" Viki snapped her fingers. "We have that set of neon body paints from the block party last year. If you paint your skin, it's not fabric covering you. It's just... colored skin. Maybe the curse ignores it because it's not an obstruction."
"Body paint," Sophie repeated slowly. She looked at Robin. "You... youre an artist. Ive seen you oaint before. You'd have to paint me."
Robin looked like he might pass out. "I... I mean... if it's for science..."
"Do it," Sophie said, grabbing his hand and dragging him toward the craft drawer. "Paint me, Robin. Cover me up. Every inch. Just make sure I'm not naked by the time you're done!" She never looked more serious in her life.
What part does he paint first?
