Better than before

She had explained how she felt about Jessica this morning when you were in her room but after having seen her in person since then you were hoping there had been at least some change.

“...I think we’re okay again” she said as a smile grew on her face, her earlier hopeful attitude seemingly paying off.

“That’s great news!” Emma replied with a similar smile.

“Yeah. I have missed her and it does feel good to talk with her again, especially when her opinion of you seems to have gone up” Sarah added with a smirk in your direction.

“Well that was mainly luck. I had no idea she worked at Grace’s gym and then it was you who asked me to start talking with her. What did she say?” you asked, curious about what had been said about you.

“Oh not a lot but that’s a good thing from her. If she’d have insulted you then we’d have been back to square one and if she had said nothing then she’d have probably just been acting polite for my sake. The fact that she just said anything at all about you was good enough for me” Sarah responded.

You went to ask again about what Jessica had actually said but from the look on Sarah’s face as she still looked in your direction, you could tell you weren’t going to get a straight answer.

“I’m gonna throw this out” Sarah said, as she picked up her empty bottle, happy to get up now that she knew you had got the message with her teasing.

“I really wanna know now what she said” you whispered to Emma once Sarah was walking away.

You expected her to joke alongside you but she suddenly changed the topic on you.

“What’s the wording on the forget me nows?” she questioned, looking from you to now keep an eye on Sarah.

You didn’t respond right away and just got out your phone, doing a very brief scan of your surroundings first just in case.

Conditions: Subject/people effect is used on must be within 10 metres of the user and/or within line of sight

“Why, what are you thinking?” you finally asked, re-reading it yourself as a refresher.

“I was making sure that Sarah would forget anything I would say if we were to use it now. It seemed like a good time and she could then see the effects at the party tonight” Emma suggested, the idea having been on her mind.

“Really right now? That seems sudden” you added, feeling the surprise from the very sudden shift in the conversation.

“I mean it’s a big decision sure but we can always back out with the forget me now’s” Emma replied.

“I’m not sure. I mean…” you went to reply, still taken aback.

“She’s coming back, I’ll go along with whatever you want” Emma interrupted, giving you the heads up that Sarah was on her way.

Emma went back into the conversation with Sarah while you mulled over the decision.

Now wasn’t exactly the best time to do this in your opinion but neither was after the party where you could be interrupted or overheard by the other subjects. And that situation was harder to control with the forget me now’s in comparison to someone random.

“Max?” Sarah asked, noticing you were absent from the conversation after a couple minutes of you thinking.

“...Sorry I… Sarah I was thinking of telling you the secret now instead of later. We are in a private enough place but I thought it best to ask you if you would prefer it now or later? We do have one more test today so I can understand holding off for…” you went to explain, giving Sarah the freedom over this decision.

“I’m happy to know now” she added before you rambled too much, her smile telling you she thought she was being kind to you with her answer.

That wasn’t the answer you had been expecting and you suddenly felt a knot tighten in your stomach as the realisation hit for what you were about to reveal. You had been hoping for more time but that was your selfish desire. If it had been just Emma suggesting it you would have maybe pulled back but given that Sarah herself had made the decision, you felt like she deserved an answer.

Telling Emma had been a spur of the moment decision at the beginning before you had made any real commitments with the KDK but now you were neck deep in it with the amount of changes you had made and you had no excuse for what you had done.

Luckily for you, you had already gone over the basic plan with Emma and she was sat here by your side, something you didn’t have last time.

You got the logical stuff out of the way first, grabbing your phone and starting an audio recording of the conversation and setting a timer ready with 9 minutes ready to go whenever you started, giving yourself and Sarah a way to go back to the conversation at a later date and also a way to make sure you didn’t go over the 10-minute limit of what the forget me not could handle.

You’d still have to explain to Sarah that she had agreed to have the conversation with you and you were then changing your mind if you used the item effect but… now it felt like you were going through all the things that could happen if this failed.

Emma moved her hand to hold yours under the table out of view from Sarah and gave you a reassuring squeeze, giving you just enough confidence to start talking before you chickened out.

“So, about 2 weeks ago I got a new phone delivered and there was a new app on it…
