"Nani. Shita. Kanojo. Iu?" The Samurai says crossing the distance between us in a sudden rush and drawing steel, ending her stroke with the sword's tip a quarter inch from my throat.

Thanks be to all the gods I am able to keep my cool. "Daremoga bushitsu ke, watashi yori hoka no kanojo no yaban'na shita o hanashita baai no kekka no nani mo, kanojo wa tazunemashita." I say with a shrug of my shoulders that gives the impression of "Gaijin. What can one do with them?"

"Hijō ni yoku, kanojo wa kanojo no atama no naka de shimin no shita o hoji shite inai baai, watashi ga tsūka shi, saishū maneru de mondai ni hyōji sa remasu koto o kanojo ni tsutaemasu." she says re-sheathing her sword with an economy of motion and grace that does not seem human.

"She said that if you make another outburst like that one while we are their guests they will cut out your tongue so you are not able to be so disruptive a third time." I explain to Jane-chan and she just swallows, hard.

"I am trying to protect you, but if you won't let me do it, you are going to be in great danger here. They have offered to take us to meet someone who can speak your language, but you must remember, these people are from my culture, not yours, and they apparently outnumber us far more than two to one. You have to trust me here, or we could both die. I won't let them hurt you, but if we are going to get out of this alive you have to follow my lead, okay?"
