Behind the Scenes: Day 9 Boss Fights, Part 2

The Show-runner

As mentioned in the last BTS, I’m generally am going to let the dice decide how things go in the boss fights. A brief note about combat in my experience with the Powered by the Apocalypse system. Because the GM generally doesn’t touch dice, monsters tend to counter-attack at every reasonable opportunity in combat (instead of just getting a single turn). This means that the action economy difference between the monsters and the players is muuuch smaller than the usual DnD 5th edition combat encounter. Between that and the much lower health, combat tends to be more deadly.

Here are the dice rolls, if you are curious.

Daphne Date Chapter – Cuddles the Cuttlefish (60 HP, 8 “legs” – 3 damage per attack [leg dies upon taking 5 damage directly in one round], 2 tentacles – 1 damage per attack with grapple save [tentacle dies upon taking 5 damage directly in one round])

Round 1:

Daphne (Storm Sphere, bonus action – lightning from Storm Sphere) – 12 on cast, Cuddles HP left: 56, 13 on lightning (crit hit), HP left 40, Daphne SP left: 27

Cuddles (tentacle counter-attack [disadvantage, due to full success on cast]) – 6, swing and a miss

Francis (attempt to Bladesing [fail, due to not able to dance effectively underwater], cast Blur) – it just happens (advantage on avoiding counter-attacks), Francis SP left: 9

Round 2:

Francis (Mind Sliver) – 9, Cuddles HP left: 38, Francis SP left: 8, cantrips up for the next hour

Cuddles (tentacle counter-attack) – 13 on dodge, no damage dealt

Daphne (start of turn Storm Sphere damage, Thunderwave, bonus action – lightning from Storm Sphere) – 9 on Cuddles getting out of field, Cuddles HP left: 36, 13 on Thunderwave [due to Mind Sliver effect], Daphne SP left: 26, Cuddles HP left: 30 and pushed back into Storm Sphere, 6 on lightning from Storm Sphere, Daphne HP left: 7, 5 on Concentration save, Storm Sphere down.

Cuddles (tentacle counter-attack) – 10 on dodge, no damage [due to Mage Armor]

Francis (Chromatic Orb) – 10, Cuddles HP left: 24, Francis SP left: 7

Cuddles (tentacle counter-attack) – 7 on dodge, no damage dealt, Francis grappled

Daphne (Control Water [make an air pocket]) – 5, missed on initial position, Daphne SP left: 22

Cuddles (tentacle counter-attack) – 11 on dodge, no damage

Round 4:

Francis (stab at tentacle) – 8, Cuddles HP left: 22

Cuddles (drag Francis to legs, leg attack into Francis mouth]) – 9 on resist drag (advantage on Libido save), 8 on leg Libido save, Disadvantage on next Libido save, Francis HP left: 7

Daphne (Thunderwave, in an attempt to push Cuddles into air pocket) – 8, Daphne SP left: 21, Cuddles HP: 18, Francis grappling tentacle dead, Cuddles in air pocket (starting to suffocate)
